Just because you personally don't care for CG animation does not mean that it's bad!

Don't judge animated films based on the type of animation it uses alone (doing that is a form of being racist/discriminatory)--it's only part of it. The story is always the most important ingredient.

There are many Computer animation films that I like or even love:
The Toy Story Trilogy, Bug's Life, Up, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, etc. but now it seems the situation is out of hand with this type of animation.
I just watched again the Let it go song. I haven't seen anything more kitsch and cheap for a long time.
As I said, it's something that I would expect to see in a Barbie movie.

and to reply to sunhuntin:
yes, even in animation films with very weak story (eg. Valhalla), i still find a magic in the visuals, that I cannot see in computer animation.

Frozen has just beat the most successful movie of the original Disney Renaissance.

So, not only has started something new, it just beat The Lion King.

I have no knowledge of inflation and things … but wouldn't Frozen being massively shown in 3D change the tally slightly ? 3D tickets are a lot more than standard cinema prices…

I'm not disputing Frozen doing amazingly well, which it has, but it seems slightly unfair to compare it to Lion King when the latter didn't have upped 3D ticket prices to help it along.

oh, yes! you're right!
They should make the analogy to number of tickets.
Not to sum of money.

When you start getting into box office "fairness", especially with Disney animated films as many have benefited from multiple releases, it's a little tricky, but overall, when things are adjusted for inflation the top 12 would be...

1. Snow White @ $853.47 million
2. 101 Dalmatians @ $782.35 million
3. The Lion King @ $697.66 million
4. Fantasia @ $650.23 million
5. The Jungle Book @ $576.91 million
6. Sleeping Beauty @ $569.05 million
7. Pinocchio @ $527.76 million
8. Bambi @ $498.86 million
9. Lady and the Tramp @ $436.40 million
10. Aladdin @ $410.62 million
11. Peter Pan @ $357.37 million
12. Beauty and the Beast @ $355.37 million

All of those except Aladdin though have had some form of official rerelease(s), so a case could be argued that Frozen would be somewhere in the top 10 if we only counted initial releases.

I see your point, but money is money. At this point, Disney is just grinning from ear to ear saying, cha-ching, cha-ching. Kidding . . . slightly. Frozen's theatrical run isn't finished yet so that number is only going to increase and regardless of whether one is comparing apples to apples, this is the first time any Disney animated film has even surpassed that number on initial release (I think).

That doesn't take anything away from The Lion King being a great movie nor does it necessarily make Frozen a better movie - better is a quality term and by nature is subjective (check out the thread on Tangled vs. Frozen).

In any event, this is a good thing. Disney will continue to invest in Disney animation and it will be a cold day in hell before the disband-Disney-animation-and-just-go-with-Pixar speculation theories that ran rampant a few years back come to fruition.

Thank you for that list, very interesting to see.

So surprised 101 Dalmations is so high up !

I'm thrilled that Frozen is doing so well; I'm thrilled with all the critical and financial success Disney has had since The Princess & The Frog …. just don't think people should go too bonkers about numbers when comparing to the older Classics … as it kind of can't really be done as DancingCrab said.

If anything, I'm more thrilled with the critical praise Disney Animation has had for the past few years, more so than box office numbers. After being in the critical wilderness for so long, it is wonderful to have Disney films be pretty much universally praised by not just critics, but pretty much everyone. Now that is wonderful, and kind of warms my heart a little bit. Disney are back to where they belong; being beloved by all generations.

If anyone has any doubt that "Frozen" has indeed ushered in a new Disney Reinassance, check out this article:

http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB1 ... 92130.html

Among other things, it says the following:
"The movie's success caps a renaissance for Disney Animation Studios, based in Glendale, Calif., which has a separate staff from its sibling studio, Pixar Animation Studios"

As the article says: "This past weekend, as the movie's domestic total hit $317.7 million, "Frozen" surpassed "The Lion King" to become the highest grossing Disney-produced animated film of all time, not accounting for inflation or re-releases.

World-wide, "Frozen" has now collected $712.3 million and has yet to open in a few major markets, including China."

Thumbs up, Disney!!! It was about time!!! :D

@DisneyCrab: I don't think that would necessarily be definitive, since boxofficemojo.com doesn't have info. for Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland, which for all we know could be up there in the top 10 knocking the others downwards, considering all the other '50s films are there. Unless you got your numbers elsewhere.

Well then... let's end this right now: ticket sales:

The Lion King - 89,146,400

Aladdin - 52,442,300

Beauty and the Beast - 45,363,700

Frozen - 40,518,000 (and counting obviously)

The Little Mermaid - 26,487,400

Tangled - 25,173,400

Fun fact: Tangled sold less tickets than Dinosaur, Mulan, Pocahontas and Tarzan.

Little known fact (or forgotten). Lion king was re-expanded into theaters in nov of 1994, which helped increased the numbers from 260 something to 312.

I'm glad Frozen is a huge hit now and i was very happy with Princess and Frog, Tangled, Winnie The Pooh, Wreck it Ralph and Frozen and this movie proves they don't need Pixar to help them

And Ed Catmull.... and the fact that a completely new crew has been reassembled by them over the years. And Pixar's braintrust is even thanked in Frozen's credits I believe.

Okay so who here is Kally The Crazy :P

And John Campea is correct, Lasseter is doing all the right things Disney Animation Wise, though lately despite what we feel should be 2-D animation or his handling of Pixar Talent ala Brave and now The Good Dinosaur and Brenda Chapman

Yes, fortunately John Lasseter stepped in just in time. He has proven a good successor for Roy E. Disney. Thanks to Lasseter's love for animation, that division of the Mouse House has recovered from the dark days of the 2000's and we are seeing a most welcome return to form for Disney. I hope thigs keep moving along this same path and we keep getting great films in the future. However, I personally would love to see a new Traditionally 2D animated Disney musical film, but I'm ok with Frozen's style if they decide to stick to that. What matters most is story and music, rather than animation style. Walt Disney loved innovention, and were he alive today he would certainly embrace the new current technology and animation styles. :D
