Oh my... deja vu! I've had the exact same conversation with Freddy from Blu-ray.com. Unfortunately, that was via PMs so I can't link you to the discussion.Jules wrote:I just bought Hercules on Blu. I haven't watched it yet, but I've skimmed through it, watched clips, and ... I'm unimpressed. There isn't much wrong with the picture, and I think most people will consider it a stellar disc, but I felt there was something distinctly off about it. At first I thought it was a lack of brightness in the transfer, but it wasn't the case. I feel it has more to do with the line-art, which, even on my 50" plasma display, looked kind of indistinct and not-well resolved. I think aliasing is to blame. If so, it's incredible that so minor an imperfection as aliasing can so efficiently rid an otherwise clean, stable and sharp image of all its lustre. I find this especially annoying as fans of the film have been waiting around 15 years for a decent optical disc release of the film (the previous DVD release doesn't count - it was a non-anamorphic, smudged, pixelated mess). And films like Hercules, created entirely within the computer, are known to be easy to transfer to Blu-ray. Similarly, the Blu-ray release of Home on the Range was a travesty.DC Fan wrote:Ok, thanks!
Today I watched Hercules.
Yes, the picture quality has been restored...the least they could do. However, I don´t think the restoration is better than Jungle Book. The image in JB is just pristine and the colors vibrant. Hercules just looks clean.
Maybe Lnds500 can weigh in with his own opinion if he's watched this release. I'd love to know.
Yes, I recall seeing aliasing on Hercules when it was released but now that I'm seeing it again, I can't actually pinpoint anything major.. From what I recall red lines were very prone to it (Megara's hair, Hades' eyes). It's very weird cause it's not always there and the image is generally very sharp (lines are striking and have that Pocahontas / BatB boldness in them most of the time).
All in all I think it looked great. It's one of the BIGGEST steps up in Disney animation we have seen from DVD to Blu-ray.
