I don't agree with him that Chicken Little wouldn't have worked as a hand-drawn film.

I just received my copy of the book in the mail today...I haven't read much of it yet, but I flipped through it, and regarding the background characters...I still can't get over the fact that they're so similar, and I totally get that they're not supposed to be so outstanding that, well, they stand out! Maybe repeat viewings will make me more used to the look of the background characters or something...!

Meanwhile at the Box Office, Frozen is running a whopping $40 million ahead of Tangled at the same time in that film's run.

$300 million is in sight, with a worldwide gross north of $700 million looking more and more likely each day.

These are PIXAR like numbers for an original WDAS film. The tables have officially turned. Something I did not expect to happen so rapidly. I know WDAS has been on an uphill slope, but this is huge nonetheless.

I don't think he's saying that it wouldn't have worked as a hand-drawn film. We should probably backtrack first to his sentence before the comparisons: "But a good film is a good film, regardless of medium." Rather, Solomon is saying that Chicken Little is still a bad film regardless of how it was made, whether it be CGI, hand-drawn, claymation, shadow puppets, etc. It could have "worked" as a hand-drawn film, but still be bad (in his opinion). There's been some hand-drawn flops before, Chicken Little would just stand out as another. The latest in a string of critical or financial disappointments after Atlantis: The Lost Empire (49% rotten, 186mil box office on 120mil budget), Treasure Planet (68% fresh, 109mil box office on 140mil budget), Brother Bear (38% rotten, 250mil box office, unknown budget), and Home on the Range (55% rotten, 103mil box office on 110mil budget). By comparison, Chicken Little was certified 36% rotten, but made 314mil at the box office, based on a 150mil budget.

But let's be honest, would the Disney fan community circa 2005 really have embraced a pop-culture-riddled sci-fi comedy simply if it was hand-drawn? A great majority of fans were already vicious towards the aforementioned films, so why would we assume our past selves would have an about-face with Chicken Little if it were hand-drawn? If anything, the film would have taken away Home on the Range's notability as "the last nail in the hand-drawn coffin" while fans reluctantly waited for A Day with Wilbur Robinson.

Well, Aladdin is coming to Broadway and the cruise ships, so there's really no need for it in DL.

I just watched Kung Fu Panda.. and man does it make me sad that Frozen didn't look as good as that movie.

I mean, talk about taking advantage of the animation medium. Vibrant colors, gorgeous lightening, beautiful shots. Why didn't Frozen look like that? and what's sad, is that KFP came out 5 years ago!

It's always been a complaint of mine that the concept artwork always looks better than the actual film, and it does feel weird, because in Animation, they literally build the world! So I was kind of put off when I watched Frozen and the movie didn't look nearly as good as the concept art. Compared to KFP, that looks absolutely gorgeous.

I've always thought that BRAVE had the best animation I'd ever seen in a CGI movie (Mermaid in hand-drawn), but KFP is climbing the ladder and soon might take over the pedestal. It's just Beautiful..

I feel bad for dreamworks... I seriously think KFP2 should have won, stupid Rango.

Dreamworks strives for realism, while Disney tries for believability. Through they strive for the same kind of thing. Anyway KFP is set in China and the backdrops are based on Chinese paintings which are always vibrant and the Chinese countryside is beautiful. Frozen is set in snow, which isn't easy to animate and snow is depicted as white, as it is snow and snow is white. So you've gotta give them some credit.
As for KFP2 winning Best Animated Feature, I think it had no chance at all. Rango was a new, different and exciting film that came out with incredible animation, and just like Happy Feet was, it was different and shone through the typical animated comedy films that were everywhere. Same with the Pixar films from Ratatouille to Toy Story 3. They showed artistry and a sense of a self knowledge that they were constructed like a live action movie.

I'm a little annoyed by the snub. It's not Pixar's finest work, but it's better than The Croods and especially Despicable Me 2. This hasn't been the greatest year for animation (Frozen is easily my favorite objectively and on a personal level), but Monsters University should be in the mix.

And yes it is the first time a Pixar film didn't get nominated in this category (even Cars 2 was).

But if it makes things easier for Frozen so be it. I wonder how the Oscar nominations will turn out.

Let's hope the mighty Pixar gets thrown off its golden throne from Disney at the Oscars.

Because if Revenge of the Monster Nerds wins over Frozen, it just shows the academy will accept anything if it's branded Pixar.

I thought Monsters University was average, so I have no issue with it not getting nominated. And I liked The Croods and Despicable Me 2, so I'm fine with their inclusions (though I would have personally preferred Epic over DM2).

First: I knew you had to be joking.

Second: Actually, I heard they're trying to fix the issues, including possibly the terribly-written climax. The playwright is writing a lot of new material and everyone will begin rehearsal a lot earlier from Toronto because it could be THAT different!

And yeah, I agree with estefan. I didn't love MU. I just liked it. It's defientely not the best or better than the first one. I'm glad that I saw it, but I don't think I'll be buying it for a long time. I just hope we get an actual sequel.

Aww, I thought the film was wonderful ! You have to admit, it has given a lot of joy to a lot of people. I'm personally torn between that and Frozen winning.

I think Monsters University is a good stand alone movie that deserved to get nominated over Croods and DM 2. I don't dislike Croods or DM 2, they are just ok imo. They have their moments, but both are nothing I'm going to truly remember years later. I'm just glad something like Epic or Turbo didn't nominated as I didn't care for either.

I do wonder why the globes decided to only nominated 3 movies, but considering what other options there were this year, it might has been a blessing.

Plus, I don't think the MU snub is as painful and furiating as the ParaNorman snub last year, that was a true snub.

Just announced this morning, "Frozen" has been nominated for "Best Picture" at the Golden Globes this year, along with the song "Let It Go", which has been nominated for Best Song. Good news for the Disney-ites who didn't think we would win anything this year.
