Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2013

Maybe they just liked those ten other shorts better. We don't know, since I assume we haven't seen them. Maybe being animators who typically vote in that category, they were put off by the hyper-realism of The Blue Umbrella.

But I really do think The Secret World of Arrietty is a work of art. It deserved, at the very least, a nomination, and it's not a stretch for me to say it deserved the win. I understand that's not a widespread opinion, but it did get great critical reviews (94% on rottentomatoes). I would think that would at least garner it a nomination, but no.

Arrietty wasn't eligible for last year's Oscar actually because it was released in Japan in July 2010.

But it was never nominated in any year. It had to have been eligible at some point.

I wasn't impressed with Get a Horse at all. Blue Umbrella, on the other hand, is this year's Paperman. Or should be, at least.

The Annie noms seem pretty fair this year. Josh Gad getting nominated for voice acting out of everyone in Frozen though isn't right. I'd think Idina Menzel would get nominated, and Kristen Bell deserved it too.

I just found out the Annie's are open to the general public. I'm in driving distance and thinking about it. Has anyone here ever gone?

Well The Blue Umbrella is already out of the running. Fucking ridiculous if you ask me!!! There's no way it shouldn't be on that short list. That was the most realistic animation I've EVER seen. I like that Get a Horse seems to be favored though.

I'm not too surprised by it being left out. The story felt too much like a retread of Paperman, and not a very inspired one. The animation itself wasn't particularly impressive, and photorealism isn't anything new or innovative (just look at any of the current generation games).

The Wind Rises took home the Best Animated Feature award from the National Board of Review and The New York Film Critics Circle. It looks like it's the favorite at the moment to win the Oscar, but of course anything can happen like last year.

Well this is going to be his last film.

But why take it out on Miyazaki? I haven't seen The Wind Rises, but I'm sure it's a fine film too. Besides, it's usually Pixar who wins the award over most else, anyway.

Did I SAY it was the goal? That doesn't change the fact that it was a VERY impressive achievement in animation and should have been honored with a nomination. But it's not that it wasn't even nominated. It didn't make the short list for the chance to even BE nominated.

It's not my favorite short of the year either and I agree with your other points, but it was at least in the top 10

I wouldn't say video game animation is there yet either.

To me it felt like a retreat of "Johnny Fedaro and Alice Blue bonnet" from Make mine Music, only this time with umbrellas instead of hats.

Agreed. And it was also too similar to last year's MUCH better Paperman.

It was just 'cute', but uninspired. Certainly among PIXAR's least interesting short.

For what it's worth, Frankenweenie, which didn't win the Oscar, won all 3 of those last year and Rango won the year before, which did go on to win.

It should be noted that critics are not part of the Academy and unlike Oscar voters, they usually watch every movie that opens.

As far as getting worried, honestly I can see the same situation happening from last year. Frozen will barley any of the critics awards, but wins the "major" ones near the end.

Brave did not win any of the critic awards last year, but won the Golden Globe and the BAFTA before winning the Oscar.
