How often do you watch the Fantasia movies?

Post by DC Fan »

In case anyone jumps at me for opening this post instead of asking the question in the official post I want to say that I do this because I´m interested in reading your answers regarding this specific question.

So, how often do you watch them?

I have to say that I barely watch them. In fact, I haven´t since I bought them so long ago. It´s just hard for me to find the correct mood/time to do it.

Also, you might say that it could be easier to just watch the animation segments. But to tell you the truth that´s not exactly correct. I´ve found that, as tedious as the introductions can get, they serve the purpose of putting me into context of what I´m about to see. Not only do I get all the info needed but also if I´m going to just jump at the segments they loose the appeal.

And it´s sad that it takes me that much to watch them since once I´m like around the dinosaur segment I start to really enjoy the movie and by the end I do feel it was very well worth the time.

I watch the original Fantasia quite often because not only is it my favorite Disney movie in Walt's time, it is a film that pushes traditional animation to it's highest level. From the Toccata to Ave Maria, every sequence is a true work of art that leaps with the brilliantly timed music.

Plus Kay Nielson was a great talent whose work is well remembered in Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria (it's funny that Nielson's concept art was to originally end Ave Maria with the image of the Madonna to contrast with the unholy terror of Chernabog. But that was changed to the final version which is simple but powerful sunrise).

"Fantasia" is a good watch for me, almost anytime I want some beautiful background music, or if I want to just immerse myself in the whole movie.

The introductions are by far the most interesting. And the animation far exceeds anything that was done back in those golden times of Walt Disney.

"Fantasia 2000" is a hard watch for me. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I start watching it, then I get called away to do something and when I come back and start it up where I left off, it just doesn't grab me like the original does.

I own the Anthology Box set as well as the Blu-ray 2-movie set.

I love both Fantasia movies, with the original being my favorite of the two. I watch them quite often and find them both very enjoyable. The only exception is the dinosaur sequence in the original movie. I feel it drags too long. It's the only segment that I find somewhat tedious. The original Fantasia is really an animation work of art, a masterpiece. You have to keep in mind that all that incredible detail in the animation was all done by hand! Sure, they can do that and more nowadays with all the CGI technology available, but this was done at a time when such technology was nonexistant. Everything was meticulously done by hand, line by line, dot by dot. No one does animation like this anymore. CGI has killed that artform and has made studios lazy. Their rhetoric? "Why spend weeks paying an animator to do a 30 second sequence by hand when he can do the same thing with CGI in a few days? Less time, less money." Yeah sure, all that. But CGI lacks the quality and the heart and soul that you can see and feel when you watch masterful animation like the type found in Fantasia. Everytime I see it, I imagine all those long hours, days and months that the original Disney animators spent creating this, and that makes me enjoy the film that much more! :)

I love both films but I admit I haven't watched them in years. Fantasia 2000 I know I haven't seen since I saw it during its initial release in 2000. Fantasia I have yet to watch all the bonus features on the Anthology box set.

Both of them are the 2 films I have watched the most out of all 52 animated features.

I kinda prefer the second one to the first.

Also a  to the above comment of "in my days 2D was the only way to do art!!".

So far, once every year or two. Keeps them from wearing out their welcome.

I LOVE FANTASIA! I probably watch once a year, but I'll find myself watching segments quite a bit more often. I have to watch the Nutcracker segment a few times during Christmas, Night on Bald Mountain around Halloween etc.

Fantasia 2000, I love the Firebird & Rhapsody in Blue sequences, but the rest isn't that great IMHO.

I seldom watch them. Admittedly, I'm not much of an art aficionado. Without the artistic angle for motivation, Fantasia isn't exactly mesmerizing.

That being said, I think the original is a better film. But if I'm in a Fantasia mood, I always gravitate to Fantasia 2000. Other than the opening sequence (is it Origami? Butterflies? I don't get it) the rest of the segments are charming enough. My personal favorites are Rhapsody in Blue, the Firebird Suite and Pomp and Circumstance (that scene at the end where Donald and Daisy reunite gets me every time, sentimental fool that I am).

I loathe the interstitials though. Thank God for the next button on my Blu Ray remote.

Usually once a year around this time, somewhere between Oct 1 and Christmas - since there are segments for both holidays (Night on Bald Mountain and Nutcracker) Go well with watching together with Nightmare Before Christmas.

I watched them for the first and only time a couple years back. Its not that I don't like them, I just rarely watch movies in my collection anymore. I'm too a.d.d to watch movies I've already seen without heavy use of the chapter skip/ fast forward button. I'm like this even with my favorite movies of all time.

Not often. They are some of the Disney movies I watch the least. However, I revisited the original Fantasia last year and I really enjoyed some segments of it.

I watch Fantasia at least once a year, possibly more often. My all-time favorite Disney movie by a long shot. None other even comes close. Indeed, I consider it one of the five greatest films ever made, let alone the finest animated film of all time.

I always avoided Fantasia 2000 until quite recently, and as I found out, with good reason. Second-rate follow up, with only one genuinely good segment (The Steadfast Tin Soldier) and a great character in The Firebird. Very disappointing otherwise.

Not very often.

Last time I saw the original Fantasia was when a Mickey Mouse film festival was held here in Buffalo in 2009.

Last time I saw Fantasia 2000 was when I saw it on VHS in 2003.

I actually have started to watch some of my favourite "classics" less and less, partly because I have less free time than I did five or ten years ago, but also because I find watching them an absolute treat and want to make watching them as much of a mini event as possible. As such, I will watch Fantasia once every two to four years on average. :)

I watch "Fantasia" about once a month, I enjoy it tremendously, especially the visuals. The animation is absolutely dazzling and the backgrounds are almost 3D. And that's 1940 we're talking about!
The only downside to it for me is the "Sorcerer's Apprentice". It looks out of place, visually and it lacks the beautiful smoothness of the other segments.

As for "Fantasia 2000", I rarely watch it, although it's still decent IMO. I guess my main problem with it is that the same thing was done 60 years earlier and WITHOUT computers, so I appreciate the original all the more.

I would argue Fantasia 2000 is the tamer one of the two, rather than blaming it's inferiority on computers.

Less then Aladdin, more than Fox and the Hound.

I've probably watched them both fully once each, after I got the blu-rays. However, I watch the beginning of Fantasia semi - often for the Mushrooms and Sorcerer's Apprentice. I always give up in the middle. Too long for me but If i'm working its nice background music. They are both beautiful films but they are difficult to watch and I think a lot of people would probably agree with me to some extent.

I love some of the sequences but at the same time some are a miss. Guess it depends on taste. I loved those dancing mushrooms when I was younger. They really don't get enough screen time. I used to rewind and watch that 20 second of film over and over again.
Settling Soul mates? That is grim. And I've played Monopoly alone.
