Pixar's Cars 3

I've never understood the "they made a bad movie so now I won't go see any of their future movies" line of thought. Yeah, Cars 2 most certainly was not my cup of tea, but that hardly means that Pixar is incapable of producing a good movie. Shouldn't it be taken film by film anyways? As in, "this one looks good, I'll go see it! This one doesn't look so good, I think I'll skip." Seems simple enough.

I think it's different when it's a sequel to two films you already didn't like. (Just guessing here; never seen Cars 2)

I actually found the first Cars movie to be charming. It had some heart to it. However the sequel with the Spy theme was dumb.

This also might be the nail in the coffin for the hopes an Incredibles 2.

Some of us don't want to get to where we start ignoring Pixar films.

Part of why Pixar has earned everybody's respect was because of their commitment to original storytelling, especially during a time when the rest of Hollywood has gone sequel crazy. The fact that two sequels, plus a spinoff trilogy is being generated from one of their LESS popular films is hurting their reputation.

I won't say that they are dead to me, but they have dropped far below my expectations - to a point I simply don't care anymore, I'm not excited to see what they'll do next.

Their movies won't be blind-buys any more and I will wait for reviews before spending money in the cinema.

You have hit the nail on the head there, that's exactly how I feel with them at the moment. I haven't actually gone to see a Pixar film in the cinema the last few years; viewed them all on blu instead.

I appreciate people love these films (though seemingly not a lot of people on here) but this does make me sad to be greeted by yet more sequel news from Pixar, and Cars especially, as it the previous sequel reached a critical low for the studio if I'm not mistaken?

I'm totally okay with a Cars 3 being made. I loved the first Cars, didn't hate Cars 2, and enjoy the shorts and universe that it takes place in. I honestly don't care if they need to make another or not. I'd rather take this than a Toy Story 4. Pixar can go right ahead with another one if they need to keep Disney happy with the sequels and merchandise. If you aren't sold on a Cars 3, than just avoid it. It isn't going to stop Pixar from churning out original productions. They have several in the works: Inside Out, Good Dinosaur, Day of the Dead, and original movies from Teddy Newton and Mark Andrews.

And you never know. Maybe it could be an improvement over the last one! The Route 99 idea that Wallis mentioned does sound intriguing, and maybe it'll return to what made the first one so great.

The sad thing is I'll have to see this. Not because I'm looking forward to it, but because I have this unexplainable sense of loyalty to the studio. I didn't have to bother with Planes, thankfully, but I've seen every pixar movie to date in theaters. I'm not about to stop now. While Cars 2 was the first critical dud, I was still excited on some level to see it because it was Pixar and they never let me down before. With Cars 3 though, this will be the first time I'll feel like I'm forcing myself to see it. All I can say is I hope they can somehow blow away my already lowish expectations. I have a feeling it's a lost cause though, because my issues stem from the fundamental universe, not just the plot, characterizations, etc.


But yes, if this being made somehow means no toy story 4, by all means make as many cars as you want. Eventually I'll have to ignore them but at least Toy Story will still have its dignity. That's worth more to me than the running an already flawed frawed franchise further into the ground.

I agree! I like the first Cars for what is is. It's a sweet little homage to the small towns of the West (not my favourite, but it's honestly not that bad). I've been hoping the third would return to that. I think I drove the 99 four times last year. I'm interested to see what they're going to do with it. And as long as they bring back Sally, don't give Mater too much screen time, and come up with a solid plot this time, I'll be happy to see it.

This might be the first Pixar film I skip in theaters...

Starting this Fall, expect to see Pixar branded products that encompass the entirety of the Pixar library. The hope is that this will allow a wider variety of Pixar films and characters to be represented. Of course, the mother of all Pixar franchises when it comes to licensing remains Cars. Josh said they were thrilled when it was announced Cars 3 was in development. With over $20 billion in retail sales, how could they not be. When asked, Josh mentioned that they see a bright future for both the Cars and Planes franchises as they coexist moving forward.

So true. Besides, they don't need a new film to introduce new merchandise or characters. If that were the case we'd have a Princess Palace Pets movie by now.

I think the first film is a bit unfairly maligned; it's actually a quite charming film, and I applaud them for having a leisurely paced film without an obvious villain, which even some of Pixar's most acclaimed films felt the need to shoehorn in. Not that I think it's one of their best, but it isn't bottom-of-the-barrel by any means.

That said, Cars 2 is one of the most soulless sequels that I think I've ever seen. The tone and everything about it is so off from the original, that it just does not feel like an organic progression. (Not that it should have been more of the same, but I felt that it almost betrayed what the first film was.) It definitely wasn't made because they found a good story that was worth telling. I also cringed at the bluntly presented "lesson" that McQueen learns at the end... It felt like an after school special. I mean, it's reasonably entertaining for passing the time, and it has some superb animation and gorgeous eye-popping visuals, but none of that saves the film from mediocrity.

Monsters University was an improvement, but not by much. Can't say I can look forward to Cars 3 all too much.

That said, I think Finding Dory has an intriguing concept and Brad Bird's spotless track record gives me absolute confidence in The Incredibles 2 (so long as he is actually writing/directing it). So I hope these sequels can show us once again that Pixar can do good sequels.

I'm not really interested in Cars 3 but I'm looking forward to seeing more products that "encompass the entirety of the Pixar library".
