Re: Frozen: Part IV
The chin is way too sharp and pointed, especially compared to the CG. Elsa's facial features are rounder.
Also, don't know what he's doing with the ears there.

Ouch. He's just giving the character a more hand-drawn sensibility. Simply replicating the CG design is not only pointless, but typically won't look appealing.PrincessElsa wrote:The chin is way too sharp and pointed, especially compared to the CG. Elsa's facial features are rounder.

I'm not used to show off there my art, but well, here are some artworks of Frozen I did (most of them nearly 8 months ago while I was working for Disney Publishing ) and that I posted recently on my sites which you can check in HD if you please on my Blog http://davidgilson.blogspot.fr/ and/or my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DavidGilsonDrawings and/or Deviantart http://princekido.deviantart.com/

Of course not. I can't even draw a convincing stick man.enigmawing wrote:Ouch. He's just giving the character a more hand-drawn sensibility. It's just my opinion of the drawing.
By contrast, I find that many of the Random House/Paradigm book-cover illustrations of Elsa have departed somewhat from the CG but in ways that I find much more appealing. (E.g., as seen in my avatar.)

Thank to for sharing, Prince Kido.
PrincessElsa, I realize it's all opinion, it just seemed a bit harsh for what amounts to non-official fanart.

Yeah that concept art does remind me alot of Cinderella. I think that the scene might be a song about Hans and Anna falling in "love".Toky wrote:Don't now if these pics have been posted before, but this concept art makes me think of Cinderella

Yeah, the more I think about how they play up Hans as some throwback to the prince charmings of the early Disney movies the more the audience will be shocked when his true nature is revealed. I mean most false prince charmings act snotty or evil from the beginning but Hans he hides what his true personality is in order to fool people.

Is that art official concept art? :O Where did it come from?

You mean the Anna/Hans ones, right? They came from the animation exhibit at Disney's Hollywood Studios.Patrick wrote:Is that art official concept art? :O Where did it come from?
Re: Frozen: Part IV
Found it on tumblr, which is actually full of concept art that hasn't been posted here before
Looking at them all together I have a feeling this movie will definitely have a classic vibe

Marketing is hiding all of the classic Disney stuff.
They did the same with Tangled.

You're right, let's just ignore that it's beautifully drawn and colored, and instead jump to nitpicking that he gave her a slightly more sophisticated look than the CG model.PrincessElsa wrote:The chin is way too sharp and pointed, especially compared to the CG. Elsa's facial features are rounder.

He even says on his fb that this was his first attempt at sketching her a while back.
Re: Frozen: Part IV
Interesting what he said about Treasure Planet. If it would have come out in November of 2003, after the success of pirates of the caribbean, it could of done much better. But i'm glad he's still proud of that film & mentioned it's oscar nod for best animated film. I not sure I agree that if the film was in CGI, it would have done better though, as there were only 4 CGI blockbusters from 1999-2002: Toy Story 2 & MI, Shrek & Ice Age.qindarka wrote:Interview with Peter Del Vecho here:

PrinceKido, your artwork is gorgeous--my favorite is the side view of Elsa with snowflakes above her hand.
I also think the davidkawena image is beautiful in its way. Tbh, I just find Elsa's design really ugly (particularly the top of her hair and its color), so any changes don't affect me so much. (The other designs range from inoffensive/uninteresting--Anna, Hans--to awful--Olaf)
Those concept images are gorgeous. The dancing picture definitely reminds me of Cinderella. But the images actually remind me more of Sleeping Beauty, overall.

Already this movie might be the best looking CGI Disney film when it comes to the art direction. It's already better than the art direction of Tangled and Wreck it Ralph and I really like those movies.Disney's Divinity wrote:PrinceKido, your artwork is gorgeous--my favorite is the side view of Elsa with snowflakes above her hand.I also think the davidkawena image is beautiful in its way. Great job to Michael Giaimo and his art team for really shaping this movie's look.

This is immensely funny on a forum where people regularly bash various movies for every possible reason (and why shouldn't they?), and yet their critiques are never condemned because they're not the voice of "experts."SWillie! wrote:Step back everyone, let the expert speak.PrincessElsa wrote:The chin is way too sharp and pointed, especially compared to the CG. So professional films and designs are open to critique by non-experts, but to criticize a fan drawing one does need to be an expert? What's the logic behind that?
Right on this page, someone called Elsa's design "ugly." Are they an "expert"? Do they need to be? What are the credentials one needs to criticize a fan drawing, pray tell?

Yeah. The influences from Mary Blair and Eyvind Earle are quite prevalent.Disney's Divinity wrote:The dancing picture definitely reminds me of Cinderella. But the images actually remind me more of Sleeping Beauty, overall.
Giaimo has certainly outdone himself. Although to be fair, the setting does lend itself for a more lush art direction than that of Tangled or Wreck-It Ralph.Musical Master wrote:Already this movie might be the best looking CGI Disney film when it comes to the art direction. Honestly, all this incredible concept art (and fanart) has made me sad Frozen didn't continue as a hand-drawn project. The medium could have made the comeback it deserved with this film. The story and the setting would have really suited the medium. And while CG animation has really progressed, character designs do not translate as well in CG, and CG animation has yet to achieve the more organic, intimate look and feel hand-drawn animation can offer. The Frozen characters in 2D look immensely better than any of their CG counterparts. Jin Kim's drawings beg to be animated. If only the Iger/Lasseter administration had given the medium another chance and left the film in 2D as originally envisioned, Frozen could have pushed the artistic boundaries of 2D animation and prove the profitability of the medium at the box office.
