Glen Keane Left Disney

Glen Keane's daughter has left Disney Animation now? Give it a couple of months and the only person left will be a dude in a Hawaiian shirt. I don't dislike Lasster (he did turn the Disney Animation unit around, after all), but I don't care for his micromanaging style of running things. I think there needs to be a bit more creative freedom allowed at both Disney AND Pixar. Are they not "director driven studios"?

Every time someone leaves Disney this forum immediately enters the five stages of grief.... except it never truly reaches the fifth stage (acceptance), instead it goes right back to denial.

Yeah, well it probably wouldn't be happening if the guys at Disney actually gave a damn by encouraging creativity instead of limiting everyone there and being... You know. Basic, like every other stupid studio on this godforsaken planet.

That's why many great and talented people are leaving Disney, thus upsetting everyone here.

Its a good think that this forum wasn't around back when Don Bluth led a mass exodus of animators from WDAS back in the 70's, that might have really tipped some people here over the edge.

DisneyJedi, if it can make you feel better; according to one of Clay Kaytis's tweets apperently Kathy Zielinski the talented supervising animator of Judge Claude Frollo has returned to Disney to be part of the animation crew for Frozen.

Interesting to see Zielinski has come back, considering she's been at DreamWorks since the very beginning. She's a great animator, so I look forward to seeing what she does.

And Patrick, I think the issue is this sort of thing has been happening so much. I was actually thinking about this today and I realised that lately Disney's Television Animation unit seems to give its artists a lot more control than John Lasseter's style of management at the Sorcerer Hat Building. I think there's a reason why folks like Craig McCracken, Lauren Faust, Tom Ruegger, Dan Povenmire, Jeff "Swampy" Marsh, Paul Rudish and Alex Hirsch have poured through those gates in the last number of years. The line-up of Phineas & Ferb, Wander Over Yonder, Gravity Falls and the Mickey Mouse shorts is some of the best I've seen come out of that unit since the One Saturday Morning days.

Agreed. They clearly have more creative freedom. The problem here is that John Lasseter's track record is so impressive. Until he steps down, he's not leaving. From a business point of view he is doing a great job. And unlike the final days of Eisner/Stainton, there are only artists and a select group of fans complaining. Disney's stock is sky-high and the mainstream media still refers to John as the genius behind PIXAR, not the micromanaging control-freak we know he is these days.

And the movies will continue to be adequate enough to do well at the Box Office, convince critics and win awards.

The next Beauty and the Beast or Finding Nemo however? It's not coming from this creatively suffocating environment, that's for sure.

Or people are really becoming dismissive of the movies that have come out. I know creativity is good but going too far in creativity can become hazard as well. I think TV series tend allow more room for creativity than movies are because of the fact movies are self contained and need management to work.

She wasn't laid off. She resigned. And that applies to the technical crew. Vis dev artists are usually kept and put to work on the next projects.

I'm just about to start a little company. Glen Keane Productions. I'm starting very small with animation, drawings and the like. I'm about to start working on a new project that I really can't start talking about yet. But I've got some ideas.

Glen Keane = The new Don Bluth?

Except, hopefully a better director with better business practises. Yeah, not a Bluth fan. Never was overly impressed by any of his work and I feel his split with Spielberg harmed rather than helped his later output. So, hopefully, Keane doesn't go down that same route.

i wonder if theres some kind of clause that says any character ideas a staff member comes up with, are property of disney? same way mattel[?] tried to take ownership of the bratz dolls since the person who designed them was employed by mattel at the time. or something like that.
