Esmeralda (ABC TV Series)

Post by Sotiris »

ABC had in the works a reimagining of Beauty and the Beast as well. A pilot was produced but the show wasn't picked up. Hopefully, this one will get to see the light of day.
Almost two decades after The Hunchback Of Notre Dame animated feature, Disney is revisiting Victor Hugo’s gothic classic, this time in TV. ABC has put in development Esmeralda, a limited/event series written feature scribe Evan Daughterty, who co-wrote a revisionist take of another classic tale with Snow White And The Huntsman. Produced by ABC Studios and studio-based Mandeville Films, Esmeralda is a period drama, which re-imagines The Hunchback Of Notre Dame through the eyes of beautiful Gypsy Esmeralda. Daugherty is executive producing with Mandeville’s David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and Laurie Zaks.

Esmeralda is the latest entry in the event series genre, which is red hot among the broadcast and cable networks. It marks the first major sale for Mandeville since the company signed a new deal with ABC Stduiso and brought in Zacks as president of television in April. Daugherty, whose credits include Killing Season, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Divergent, is with UTA, which also reps Mandeville, and BenderSpink.

Meh...

Considering the ending to the novel and the fact that this is ABC, I'm guessing it will be as faithful an adaptation as Frozen.

And in Hunchback's case, I'm really craving something that dares to go to that dark place. We've seen the animated film. It's flawed and gorgeous and it needs to stay the way it is. But too many adaptations are too light and stray from the novel, which is a pretty good book, so no need to change all that much really... And again, this is ABC, not AMC.... so it will probably have a happy ending.

An unnecessary happy ending.

The only thing I have to say about this is that I hope it causes Disney to realize just how popular Hunchback really is and actually market the film and create some merchandise for it.

It's sad, but one of the things I've always dreamed of seeing is an authentic Disney doll of Frollo. It would be SO amazing if this...Esmeralda...thing... reignited the fan-base and it caused the folks at Disney to actually produce new merchandise based on the film.

Yes ! Yes so much !

Hopefully it's loyal to the Disney version of Esmeralda because she rocked the house down.

So pumped for this ! :pink:

I disagree with this because I don't want Quasi or Esmeralda to die. It would be so painful to watch. The novel ending is imo very overrated. There was so nothing wrong with Quasi finally getting accepted by society and being able to be outside without being judged by society by his appearance.

And I don't even like the film in the first place.

Regardless, I wonder how will it go...Will it follow up in the Once Upon a Time theme, with dark-version of classic fairy tales?
