Disney encourages kids to play games in the theater during “The Little Mermaid”
http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in ... 06551.html
The movie theater is one of the few remaining sanctums where you're largely safe from the annoying glow of smartphones and tablets.

Well, at least until Disney re-releases "The Little Mermaid" on September 13. The studio is actively encouraging kids to bring along iPads and play games while the movie is showing on screen.

Specifically, they're inviting you to be part of Ariel's world with their own app -- Disney Second Screen Live -- designed to let viewers interact with the film. It's essentially a kid-friendly blend of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” karaoke, and video games.

The app will lead sing-alongs with the film's soundtrack, games based on events in the film, behind the scenes information, and a competitive element played against fellow theater-goers. The app is free, but perhaps due to Disney's close relationship with Apple, Android tablets are not supported.

Disney is rolling it out slowly -- only 16 theaters nationwide will take part in the Second Screen Live experiment -- but it's still a radical departure from most theaters' policies, which urge viewers to silence or turn off their mobile devices before a film starts since the bright light from the screens is particularly distracting in a darkened theater.

Film buffs are obviously not thrilled by the idea. Slashfilm derisively calls it a "second screen indoctrination tool for young children." Penny Arcade Report paints an uglier picture.

"Imagine a theater full of children, with everyone looking down at a bright screen instead of watching the movie," writes PAR editor Ben Kuchera. "Let's hope that the app is silent or you'll be dealing with hundreds of speakers all playing music with different timing, or at different volumes. Hellish."

The in-theater Second Screen experience is an extension of Disney's tests with a home-based Second Screen app. Two years ago, the company began testing the idea of offering bonus footage, concept art, filmmaker commentary and storyboard images for home video releases, issuing versions of the app for the Blu-Ray releases of “Bambi,” “Tron: Legacy,” “The Lion King” and “The Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Disney first tested the use of the app in theaters last fall with Tim Burton's “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” The company says the trials resulted in "positive" responses among viewers, though you certainly wouldn’t think that based on the 5-1 ratio of “thumbs-downs” to “thumbs-ups” on the trailer’s Youtube page.

Sixteen theaters... It's pretty clear that's not fair to anyone not living near those theaters! :(

Plus they might have a special rule known as BYOI (Bring Your Own Ipad). :P

If the theaters required one to have an Ipad to see this, I can see why only 16 were crazy enough to agree. It would be interesting to know if you didn't have to bring an Ipad and maybe watch it the old fashioned way

I didn't get to see The Little Mermaid when it was originally in theaters (I was only four-years-old but my mom got me Little Mermaid stuff). I was really looking forward to my chance to see it on the big screen this fall. Then Disney canceled the theater release here in the USA. Then Disney allows it to be released in theaters but it's limited to a tiny amount of theaters and the entire film's audio track is overwhelmed by kids (and parents) who don't have to hush up because they have special permission thanks to an Ipad app they can use to sing along and it gives them other stuff like games to loudly chatter about. I'm depressed. :(

Do you know where the 16 theaters are located?

Is that where you live? Do you know if it is being shown in Maryland? Is there a website that has a list of what theaters are participating? I did a google search for locations, right after I read my youtube email, which had a link to....

Never mind, I just found the list. I got so excited while reading the youtube description "EXCLUSIVELY IN THEATERS STARTING SEPTEMBER 13, 2013." that I stopped reading the description and started trying to figure out if this is for real or if it was a hoax. I just went back to the description and noticed that there was a link to Disney's Little Mermaid's Website, which took you directly to the Second Screen Live. On that page, there are 12 theaters listed.

*Anaheim, CA - AMC Downtown Disney 12
*Burbank, CA - AMC Burbank 16
*Emeryville, CA - AMC Bay Street 16
*Huntington Beach, CA - Century Huntington Beach and XD
*Los Angeles, CA - El Captian Theatre
*Thousand Oaks, CA - Muvico Thousand Oaks
*Leawood, KS - AMC Town Center 20
*Paramus, NJ - AMC Garden State 16
*Farmingdale, NY - Farmingdale Multiplex Cinemas
*New York, NY - AMC Empire 25
*White Plains, NY - City Center 15: Cinema de Lux
*West Plano, TX - Cinemark West Plano and XD

These were the issues I noticed in that video

The Walt Disney Castle Logo changed (not a big issue in my opinion)

Different timings of Walt Disney Pictures in differ lettering (not a big issue for me either)

The 2013 version doesn't credit silver screen association (again not a big issue)

Now the obvious one that we all are upset about is the Flounder/Ariel/ Part of Your World goof up.

But other than that I didn't notice much difference. Could someone list what the other changes were for me?

On the bright side, the restoration looks amazing.

Just annoying there are any changes at all, as there doesn't need to be.

Fiddling for the sake of fiddling.

And yes, the restoration is marvelous!

Yeah going to stay with the 2006 version. I don't really want to support fiddling a classic movie. Because then it gives them the A- Okay to imo make bigger changes.

This.

Very depressing.

Just leave the movie as it is Disney. Don't try and fix what's very so not broken.

I can't seem to find the difference in that scene. Can someone point it out?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that is a chemical burn or else something just got on the film for a split second..which is odd as it wasn't there before, unless they used a completely different print as the base for their restoration this time. This looks like something you'd see on The Fox and the Hound blu-ray...

Image

Though, It took someone else pointing it out for me to find it too.

I'm still trying to see what's up with Daughters of Triton (is it just the inside of the shells being a different shade of blue?) and the Tour of the Kingdom opening shot.

I almost feel like this edition of TLM could spawn a new drinking game for Disnerds. Take a shot everytime you spot another mistake in this "restoration".

Edited to add Disney's latest automated response:
"Thank you for contacting Walt Disney Studios.

In preparation for its Blu-ray release, THE LITTLE MERMAID went through an intensive re-mastering process. Unfortunately, a minor oversight led to a switch of two small cuts during the "Part of Your World" scene. There is no impact on the quality or overall experience of the film.

We hope this provides you with the information you require. However, if you require any further information then please do not hesitate to contact us.

That smartphone screening sounds really stupid. Rather than re-release it the regular way.

Disney finds ways to annoy their fans.

Translation: It's going to sell a lot either way so we don't feel like issuing a replacement for the loyal fans of this company and of this film because the majority of people won't be calling us demanding a refund :glare:
