I don’t think it’s true. It’s been known that Triton and Ursula are siblings (or were, if you want to see it as a dead concept since it’s not said in the final film) has been around since the Platinum re-release, and the idea that Ursula was banished because she killed Ariel’s mother has been a fan theory for a long time, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything about Ursula doing experiments (much less on Ariel’s mother).
Oh, and I agree about the underdeveloped romances (in any movie, not just Disney’s). They are so pointless and annoying.
Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"

I have to disagree because HOND traumatized me as a child. Yeah I love HOND now, but back when I was about five it was terrible. Family movies are sort of soft for a reason. Sugar and Tar Family movies while awesome for adults can be a disturbing experience for kids. Example children pissing themselves in fear during cinema viewings of Snow White.
My Mum refuses to watch Dumbo or Bambi as seeing the Mother Elephant locked up in the cage disturbed her same with young Bambi loosing his Mum in the woods by Man.
I know that older viewers find the comedy "dumb " or the Gargoyles in HOND stupid and a waste of space but imo when I was a kid they were a blessing.
thedisneyspirit wrote:Here's a quick list of Disney and Pixar films where the romance isn't really needed and doesn't affect the plot if you cut it out:
-Bambi
-Peter Pan (aside from maybe Tinkerbell's crush on Peter which saves his life the rest is really unneeded)
-101 Dalmatians (i'm not sure to count this one since the "love story" occurs only at the start of the film and the rest is pretty much given)
-The Jungle Book (why would Mowgli crush on the first human he ever sees? at least tarzan took some time to know jane properly before liking her)
-Robin Hood
-Aristocats
-Rescuers (that is if you believe the mice are in love)
-Fox and the Hound
-Black Cauldron (does hints of a posible relationship- like in the rescuers- count as a romance?)
-Lion King
-Mulan
-Atlantis
-Treasure Planet
-Wreck It Ralph
-Toy Story series
-Monsters Inc
-Ratatouille
-Cars
So yeah, I'd say they should stop using this trope.
The romance is needed in Bambi, The Lion King and 101 Dalmatians so they can have (plot relevent) babies
I agree with FlyingPiggy that the half-done romances are okay in case of the plot relevant babies. In those cases, I'd prefer they not even try to give the female a personality though, because they aren't important.

Because he was on the brink of puberty and horny? It's not that unrealistic. He finally had some eye candy that was the same species.
Newsflash: most people have relationships in the real world, and that part of their lives is usually more emotionally interesting than their jobs or hobbies or whatever. It's really not something that needs to be avoided in films.

Stop all the bull shit that has been going on since Walt died.
And not mass produce terrible live-action shows so no Hanna Montana etc, and terrible animated shows, that not related to earlier animated shorts. So no Pepper Ann, Kim Possible etc.
Der Fuehrer's Face is the greatest Donald Duck cartoon ever made.
The Howard Ashman formula for a Broadway musical feature. The ebullience of the early Renaissance features died with Ashman, and each successive feature that tries to mimic The Little Mermaid becomes an empty, shallow echo. Princess and the Frog & Tangled are the contemporary examples of such lusterless echoes.
I can't really think of many narrative devices that I'm particularly sick and tired of. Examples like villains falling to their deaths or orphaned protagonists are irrelevant, because they're just background contrivances for what really matters in the foreground. Although comic relief can be irksome, especially in films such as Hunchback, it can work well, and I think it would be too much of a sweeping, generalisation of a statement to criticise it, especially considering it's an element that contributes to the entertainment value of the best animated classics. I suppose I would rather enjoy seeing more diverse casts - racially, most of all, yet I would be pleased to see an LGBT character or too. More female characters compared to male characters would be good too.
I'd agree with Frankenollie- after Aladdin the film series of the 90s start to get stale- sometimes the music is just there for the sake of being there (ooh tarzan!).
And yeah it'd be nice to see more diversity among the main casts and to get away from that "Princess" role that has fallen into every Disney female character- nowadays it's just marketing purposes. There's no reason for the girls of Frozen to be princesses at all.

THANK YOU. I seriously feel that Disney wanted the sisters to be princesses because it would mean double the toys to sell at Christmas.
