That article's interesting. Apparently, the reporter actually did some research before the interview. Usually, interviewers seem to just set up questions for the interviewee to give pre-recorded answers. Yes, 2D is not dead--they use it to make 3D films! What an answer.

Indeed. That response was just ridiculous.

So, the "Disney Imagineering" fan Twitter posted this little tidbit today:
So I think I just got Eric Goldberg to admit publicly to developing a feature-length film in the style of "Paperman"! #D23Expo

Steve Hulett: Re hand-drawn: John L. pitched the Burbank studio as the hand-drawn outpost and Pixar as the CG studio to Iger back in his early tenure at Disney. Iger said no, but allowed a couple of hand-drawn features to proceed. The fact that they didn't get sufficient traction at the box office tells the tale. The parade moves on.

Q: Steve, do you know whether Lasseter has a say on whether the studio produces more hand-drawn films or is he just following Iger's orders?

Steve Hulett: What I've been told by Disney staffers is, Mr. Lasseter has indicated he's not interested in pushing more 2D animated features. Now, this has been told to me by people inside and yes, it's hearsay. And Mr. Lasseter can always change his mind. But let's look at cold reality: Frozen started life as a hand-drawn feature, was temporarily shelved, then, when Tangled performed well, moved forward as a CG feature. That should tell you something.

Yeah? Well, that probably wouldn't have happened if Disney had shown they actually CARED about hand-drawn's future instead of pitting their 2D animated princess film against 'Pocahontas in Space'! Hell, it probably wouldn't have been made as a CG feature or renamed as Frozen if Tangled were still called Rapunzel!

Yeah that is quite idiotic. I'm very disappointed with Lasseter right now. Especially if these hear say reports are true which given he did tell Chris Saunders to beat it when Chris didn't want to do in 3D and the title of Tangled and Frozen are so similar, I'd say those reports could very well be true.

Early on I've referenced a line of dialogue from The Dark Knight where Harvey Dent says you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. And giving some of these animators lost their careers at Disney, in way a part of their dreams died metaphorically speaking while Lasseter and whoever else became the villain(s). However like Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park says, life finds a way and these animators found a way to Dreamworks, at least some of them I think

I'm starting to sense the dark side in Mr. Lasseter right now. Ironic, isn't it?

I don't think we can use Avatar as an excuse for Princess and the Frog being a box office disappointment. Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 and Sherlock Holmes came out the week after Avatar and where box office successes.

I always wonder why no one ever complains about the other studios not doing hand drawn animation but Disney is expected to do it. I mean Katzenburg discontinued hand drawn animation at DreamWorks but he is never bombarded with being asked to bring it back. . Why is it only Disney being asked but not the others? Or even better why hasn't there been any complaints about Warner Brothers not doing a hand drawn animated film in a long time?

Well, because Dreamworks doesn't have the massive legacy of hand drawn films supporting the tradition, and WB's feature division has always been overlooked, because they barely do anything.

Yeah, but neither Alvin or Sherlock went on to outgross Titanic.

Because no other studio has the rich history, legacy and association with hand-drawn animation like Disney does. Lasseter actually admitted this as well: "If there's a studio in the world that should still be doing hand-drawn animation, it should be the Walt Disney Animation Studios. The studio that started it all".

Having said that, I would be ecstatic if any other Hollywood studio would produce a hand-drawn feature.

Though these films are not hand drawn I still think the premises sound cool enough to keep continuing my interest in them. In my honest opinion I kind of don't care that anything isn't hand drawn animated right now and just look out what the story is going to be like. Heck, there has been nothing but good things being said about Frozen so far and I am optimistic. Maybe in the next decade Disney will finally get a hand drawn animated movie but for now I feel that current movies and upcoming ones share the spirit of Disney movies of the past.

I think a real middle finger in my opinion would be making more Shrek like comedies like they did with Chicken Little.

Most say WDAS downfall was in the early 2000s, but it actually was 2005-2009. They entered the CGI field with 3 sub-par, forgettable films. Then in 2009 they release a new 2D film & blame it for the death of any new 2D animated features. Tangled saved WDAS,kind of what Cinderella & The Litte Mermaid did in their eras. Winnie the Pooh was pretty much dead on arrival, releasing it on the same day of the last harry Potter film.

But this decade of WDAS was released this past july, after this year's Frozen & 2014 Big Hero 6, you got Zootopia, Giants, Monana & The Teenage Space-Race Film through 2018. All in basic CGI. Lets hope by 2020, 2D gets another shot, cause right now it's dead!

You know what? Lasseter is just like George Lucas. Think about it.

Back in the mid to late 80s, Ted Turner announced on the idea of coloring all old black and white films, but who should come along and say they should preserve films as they're intended to be. Yet look what he's been doing later to his own original Star Wars trilogy lately.

Why compare Lasseter to Lucas? Because they're both hypocrites, that's why.

Lasseter said that he was going to revive the medium, now he's saying they aren't moving forward with it. Is this coming from the John Lasseter, the man who made The Brave Little Toaster, the man who decided to make a career out of animation because he saw Sleeping Beauty and read a book that was basically the making of said movie?! The man who said that there was a uniqueness about hand drawn animation (or something like that)?!?! The man whose favorite Disney film was Dumbo for crying out loud!!!
