The Disney Parks Nostalgia Thread

Post by pinkrenata »

This is the place where we can post anything AWESOME about Disney parks of the past.

I get to start!

I did not make my first trip to a Disney park (it was Disney WORLD) until the next year, but just found this poster on Pinterest. This parade looks super awesome and would have totally been one of my favorite memories if I had seen it as a kid.

By the way, anyone ever have a chance to dance at Videopolis? (I don't even know what that it, but I'm sure a quick Bing search will remedy that. :tink:)

I never danced at Videopolis but my boyfriend and I used to love to dance at 8 Traxx which was in WDW's Pleasure Island. Very gay friendly atmosphere and we're suckers for '70s and '80s dance music when dance music had a real groove.

Since we're on a dancing kick...

Back when Pleasure Island was the hot spot for CP's to hang out on Monday and Thursday nights (free admission, yo!), a group of us decided to hit a few of the clubs in one night just to get a feel for them. Naturally, we saw both the improv act at Comedy Warehouse and the cabaret at Adventurer's Club. I still remember the poor husband (Tucker) who was brought up to the stage at Adventurer's Club, where he had to dance for his wife. The server there had asked us if we'd seen a cabaret before, and I innocently said, "No." And he looked at me, then said, in a very deadpan tone, "I feel so sorry for your life."

Later that night, we went to Motion, which I don't remember much of. The music was okay, and I know I got a drink there (I think it was called a Troublemaker?), so I still have the plastic glass in which it was served. That thing gave me a headache, though, and so someone else finished it for me.

As carolinakid said, 8 Traxx had a lot of fun 70s/80s songs, but since we were there early in the night (about 8pm), it meant most of the parents were there as well. So we didn't stay long, although it was a hoot to see just how wild some Disney guests get when their kids are safely tucked away at the hotel.

I think my favorite part of the night occurred at Mannequin's. This was the place with the rotating dance floor, and a lot of the current music of the time (remixed and techno-ized, but who cares?). Two of my friends immediately took to the dance floor, while me and another watched from the sidelines. Somewhere down the line, they pulled my friend in, and I eventually had to join them. So the four of us were pretty much dancing in our own circle within the circle. Just for fun, one of my friends decided to pretend it was a treadmill, and began running in the opposite direction of the rotation, and the three of us followed suit. Twas a lot of fun.

Great stories !

I will never forget being in Hurricane, the Disneyland Paris 'club' on my birthday, sipping on cocktails, and having all these suited and booted Disney men trying to buy me a drink. I was like, this is too bizarre to be hit on by Disney Park execs, in a Disney park.

Yup, I've been dancing at Videopolis back in the day . . . would have been late 80s/early 90s. I seem to remember a bunch of MC Hammer tunes, and doing the Roger Rabbit.

(good grief I'm old - lol!)

Since we are talking nostalgia about the parks, my favorite memory of Disneyland, California, was the "Country Bears Jamboree" show. When we went to Disneyland it was always the first thing we did, before any other ride or tour.

We all loved that program so much, and we have even added "The Country Bears" to our movie collection and watch it on a regular basis now.

I don't know why they closed it, but the only other 'ride' that I can think of that we never missed was the "Star Tours" ride featuring the characters from Star Wars.

"Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" is another one that I really liked. Along with "It's A Small Small World", which is or was a great ride.

We haven't been to Disneyland since 1978, only because we can't afford to go anymore. We had been saving up for a big visit a few years ago, but as most of you know, I had to have my left leg amputated just above the knee, and even with insurance, that was an expensive surgery and recovery.

Since we are now on a fixed income, Social Security is our only income, we don't have the extra money to be able to come back to California or go to Florida. Right now we have all of our memories and they are nothing but the best.

So here's what you can do:

Disneyland still has Mr. Toad.
WDW still has Country Bears.
Disneyland Paris still has the original Star Tours (although the robot speaks French.)
It's A Small World is EVERYWHERE.

Month-long Disney trip? Yes?

Which part of my post did you not read? We are on a fixed income, which means we get only Social Security once a month, and there is always too much month at the end of the money. We are unable to save any money because of the hospital/rehab expenses.

I appreciate the information, but unless there is a wonderful angel out there who wants to finance a trip to California and/or Florida, our memories are all that we have.

Does ANYONE have money for a month-long Disney trip? Trust me, I know about limited funding. I teach at a poor urban charter school, working extra hard for much less than the average teacher salary. Please re-read what I previously wrote and add a little humor. ;-)

Goodness, can you imagine a month - long Disney trip ? You could discover every single hidden nook and cranny of the park at your own leisure. No time pressures or constraints; you could spend a couple of days not doing any rides, just discovering places you normally just glance at, and do ALL the meet and greets.

My word, sounds amazing

I'm totally up for this month long imaginary trip!

But let's make it 2 months and go to all the other parks too - you know, make some NEW nostalgia while we are at it!

How about, while we are at it, a 6 month trip to ALL THE DISNEY PARKS AROUND THE WORLD ?

Then, and only then, can we thoroughly compare each park against eachother, and we can find out for ourselves which is the BEST of all the parks.

I wonder how much it would actually cost....? I guess it would make sense to buy passes for the parks, the year inclusive ones.

Honestly, my response is similar to dvdjunkie’s in atlanticaunderthesea’s “C’Mon People” thread. I actually like the parks, but the reason I don’t talk about them is because I can never afford to go so I don’t really think about them. And they’ve changed so much, so I probably know nothing about how they are now anyway. I might go sometime in the next two years if I can manage it.

The only memories I have come from when I went to Disney World in 1999, for my 11th birthday. My mother, sister and I went with my aunt and her two daughters (who would literally go every other week and buy everything--they had dozens and dozens of lithographs, toys, snow globes in their house; no wonder they had to file bankruptcy eventually, but I was so jealous when I was young). My aunt had some kind of job with Disney, maybe at one of the stores? So she had a discount for everything. And one of my cousins is disabled, so with her in our party, we kind of got to jump ahead of a lot of people. :P

I know nothing about what places are called/etc., but I believe my favorite memory was going into the Disney Villains store, and seeing all that merchandise. We couldn’t everything (although I did get a lot that year--a gorgeous Ursula figurine that came with a very nice watch was the best thing I got; villain stationary/pins/figures/pens/posters/etc.; a villain Snowglobe, the one with Chernabog over top, Ursula laid down in front, Pain and Panic with the Magic Mirror at the back, and the Evil Queen in the center; and some gorgeous shirts which I’ve stored away and I honestly never see online, so I’m glad I got them now that they don’t make things like that anymore). I also remember going into a different store which wasn’t necessarily just villains, but they had a giant Ursula statue, which I took a picture with.

I also remember seeing Fantasmic, which I loved because of all the villains. There was the Tower of Terror, which I honestly didn’t want to ride--I’m not crazy about rides--but my cousin coaxed me on with “it only drops twice” (and then I was super-pissed off when we got off, because it dropped three times. ). I remember Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, too. It wasn’t great, but I enjoyed it because I was young and I was so obsessed with the movie. There was a train ride, too, that I liked okay, but can’t remember what it was called or anything. Oh, and I enjoyed Splash Mountain more than I expected, although I hit my nose on the way down which kind of ruined the last part. There was TLK thing, too, where it was audience participation. Of course, my sister and I got called on (I guess they target the children more often), and they wanted me to make an elephant noise, but I was ridiculous. There was the spinning teacups, which I do remember enjoying. And then some Dumbo spinning in the air ride, which…not so much.

One of the other things I liked was getting autographs. Ariel was my number 1 priority because I knew there wouldn’t be a person signing as Ursula, unfortunately, and I did get her (my favorite signature, easily). I still have it somewhere, but I do remember getting Megara (who I loved, too), Alice, Cinderella, and Jasmine all at once. The Donald guy was a real pest, but I got the signature, too, and Mickey/Minnie. I also got Flik at a special line--I believe ABL was just released or about to premiere soon, can’t remember. I remember seeing Merlin once in a square, but he was running off somewhere--I had really wanted to get his signature, but didn’t get the chance. :(

I don’t remember liking the food at Disney World. The breakfast was decent, but I remember the pizza’s you could order to your room being really awful. (btw, I believe we saw a naked lady through the curtains on the way to our hotel room; that was such a bizarre memory that just popped in my mind. ) I believe we also went to Universal, but nothing stands out. I remember riding the E.T. ride, which was okay. I think we ate in some kind of saloon recreation there. On my actual birthday, we went to some restaurant which I remember had a Monstro painting along one wall. They sent a birthday card around the restaurant which everybody signed except one person, which was nice. I didn’t know it then (my mother just said he was a celebrity, but I didn’t watch 7th Heaven then), but apparently Stephen Collins was there and he was the one that didn’t sign. (I just asked my mother who that person was as I was typing this. :P )

My best memories were mostly in the stores, tbh. Looking at all the Ursula stuff, mostly. Of course, when I went, Disney was still pretty huge, so that might be why the merchandise was so nice. I remember walking down one street when it was snowing (my birthday’s at the end of December, so the trip was for Christmas and my birthday combined, which is why my mother bought so much). The experience was probably better for me because of my aunt’s privileges, but she’s no longer in the family. I would definitely like to go back as an adult. Thankfully, I don’t like rides so much, so I wouldn’t waste much time standing in lines.

No you don't -- it wasn't open yet! :-P Maybe you're thinking of Ariel's Grotto? It was like a meet and greet place.

Great memories! I like reading people's Disney parks stories. :-)
