Disney rarities and obscurities on YouTube

I just thought it would be cool to share some obscure Disney-related material on here (eg old documentaries and TV specials). There is quite a lot of material out there on YouTube and other video sites (DailyMotion, Vimeo etc), but it often gets lost among heaps of rubbish. I'll just post a few here for now. Feel free to share some that you've found here.

Disney: The Fairy Tale Years
A BBC documentary from 1992 from around the release of Beauty and the Beast (including a very short preview of the unreleased Aladdin) concerning Disney's early fairy tale shorts and features and the renewed interest in the genre at the time of the documentary's creation. Although a lot of the material covered will probably be familiar to most Disney connoisseurs, it does provide a variety of interviews, including some with the Nine Old Men. There are also some live-action references for Snow White and Cinderella, and the third part of the documentary also shows some artwork for "unmade Disney fairy tales".

Pinocchio: Remastered
A BBC news article from 2009, when Pinocchio was last released on DVD/Blu-Ray. A bit of fluff, but interesting to see the re-release of a Disney film receive some news coverage.

EuroDisney (aka Disneyland Paris) Grand Opening
The UK version of the Europe-wide broadcast of the opening of EuroDisney (the original name for Disneyland Paris) in 1992. I believe that this has actually been cut down a bit from its original runtime, but it nonetheless provides some cool gems, in particular the openings of Fantasyland (13:22) and Discoveryland (22:55) and a preview of attractions that never saw the light of day in light of the resort's initial finance problems (28:10).

I really enjoyed that fairy tales documentary. I've never seen those Chanticleer drawings before actually, but I think they're marvelous. There's alot of Davis in them and they I think they strongly resemble his later work on the America Sings attraction at Disneyland. What a shame that never got made, but something like The Aristocats did.

I actually remember watching this back when it was shown ten years ago (I caught it purely by coincidence, I might add). It traces animation history in general, but devotes a great deal of time to Disney, as well as Pixar and Miyazaki.

Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen that before. I really enjoy listening to Lasseter speak, his words are inspiring, especially towards the beginning (6:42) when he was talking about his first animation with characters, and how the computer science world had no knowledge of basic animation techniques - what makes a pencil line become a character, what makes a drawing become emotion. He really reminds me of Disney, his focus on story and characters, his insistence on perfection+1, attention to detail, and pushing technology to help tell great stories. So glad he's back with Disney, and seems to be putting them back on track.

Wow, the opening of Disneyland was absolutely fascinating, thank you for sharing it. It does make me sad seeing what they haven't done in the park; especially Mermaid. I understand not doing it at the time for monetary reasons, but feel like they could do it now !

When I watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame on Blu-ray for the first time in March, I made a whole day of it since it's one of my all-time favorites. While poking around for vintage (I can't believe I'm using that word to describe 1996...) Hunchback promos on YouTube, I found this beauty: The Hunchback of Notre Dame Festival of Fun Musical Spectacular. This documents the premiere of the film in New Orleans and shows what an event a Disney movie used to be. The first 15 minutes show a behind-the-scenes look at the concert, the next 15 shows the parade that preceded the concert, and the next hour is the concert itself which showcases tunes from the "Disney Renaissance" and has many guest appearances. In the midst of these are little Hunchback Disney Channel promos as well as the "Someday" music video by All-4-One. I miss the days when Disney went all-out on their animated film promotions. Sigh. Anyway, enjoy (the person who uploaded it disabled embedding, unfortunately).
