Yeah, yeah. Discussing Disney Princesses in the fandom is like beating a dead horse with another dead horse that was also beaten to death by another dead horse. But I found this article about the princesses so mediocre that I HAD to share. The article is called "Why Tiana is my Favorite Disney Princess". The author explains the princesses and their virtues. You can read it here:
http://networkedblogs.com/Le0J6
What annoys me the most are the very basic descriptions for each princess. Some are pretty accurate, but some of these are so shocking that I wonder if the guy even watched the movies before writing this article down. Just read Rapunzel and Mulan's paragraphs. I seriously wanted to bang my head when I read those.
See, what bothers me is how these people that claim to understand Disney could write articles that are not only basic, but lack the simple understanding of character and plot development. I am not one against the analysis of the Disney Princesses, but they should be more than this. This was a brain fart the guy had and put down on words so he could declare himself as someone that "deeply analyzed the Disney Princesses".
Mediocre Article About the Disney Princesses
Re: Mediocre Article About the Disney Princesses
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. As a parent I can definitely relate to how things change, and how watching the same movie I may have seen a million times will be completely different when I watch it with my kids also watching. All of a sudden I'm responsible.
The post does seem to really over emphasis some things, and under emphasis other things. I thought Rapunzel was a great role model, in taking her 'dreams' into her own hands, and not waiting for prince charming to sweep her off her feet. And while Flynn had a nice arc, so did Rapunzel. Thinking about when she said "that's why she never.....that's why *I* never left"....owning that at some point she was choosing to stay in that tower, always struck me as she starts to show maturity.

The reason why she never left the tower was because she was emotionally and psychologically abused by Mother Gothel. It was because of her foster mother's upbringing that acted like a chain preventing her from ever actually going outside. And sadly in real life that sort of thing happens.russds wrote:Interesting. Re: Mediocre Article About the Disney Princesses
Okay
Snow White- Nope, Snow wanted her Prince to come and save her because she fell in love with him at the castle by the well. Did you watch the movie ??
Cinderella- Sigh so much. Cinderella only wanted to go to the ball to spend time with her family and get a break from the house and basically being a slave. She didn't predict that the Prince would love her or even like her; it was just a nice surprise.
Aurora- It's not her bloody fault that she was put under that spell ! She was hypnotized ! Again did you watch the movie ? Plus Aurora and Phillip met each other when they assumed that each other were rotten poor and had no money. Philip wanted to marry the " maiden girl " and Aurora wanted to marry the " mysterious poor boy " Aurora did not go " Ohh Philip is rich, I'll marry him " ! or " Aurora is rich I'll marry her " ! Bloody hell.
Ariel - Ariel did learn her lesson, it's a short time but it's there. She didn't know that her Dad was going to turn her human again. Again like Cinderella she's not a bloody physic ! And she does say " Daddy, I'm sorry " ! Again, short but it's there. F***
Belle Most of the stories didn't have Mothers because they were dead in the original story. Stop with this " Disney hates Mothers " ! thing because it's not their fault that most Fairy Tales are Motherless.
Pocahontas I'm surprised that there wasn't a " The Mum is dead, Disney are terrible " rant here.
Mulan * Headdesk *
Jasmine Jasmine is the polar opposite of bratty. She doesn't want treasures or gold she just wants true love, and she's incredibly un-shallow. She's just frustrated because she's being treated like a prize, and she doesn't want to be. She's strong. And why should she change ? She's fine the way that she is. She doesn't want to be a pushover or be used, be treated like a fool or just be a prize on Aladdin's or somebody else's shelf. Her changing would make her weak, naive and easily used.
Rapunzel Rapunzel was pretty brave and bold to get out of that tower and not all of Tangled's story is focused on Eugene.
Merida So you call Jasmine a brat but you don't call Merida bratty at all ? And her refusing marriage isn't different all. And there's nothing wrong at all with falling in love. Yes Merida had a Mother, but what's the point when you act so much like a selfish brat towards that Mum ? It's almost pointless. Sure Ariel and Triton didn't have a good relationship but when did Ariel say to her Dad that she hated him ? Never. In fact at the end she says " I love you Daddy " but yeah... "let's go with the she has no man so she's better idea " So much better than treating your parents with love, even if you disagree with them sometimes. ( sarcasm )
Nice reasons for loving Tiana, but the other reasons for downgrading the other girls is just.......wrong.

Re: Mediocre Article About the Disney Princesses
He does know that most of these movies are based on fairy tales, right?
I think, he may wan to reconsider Cinderella for example. Perhaps it would have been better if Disney showed the whole movie. You know, the part where the stepsisters mutilate her feet so they could fit in the shoe. Or later on when the stepmother is blinded.
What about if Disney made/makes Hansel and Gretel where the witch holds them captive and later they kill her.
That women were mistreated in Mulan?...Mmmm, DUH!!!! It was a portrait of the Chinese culture...and most cultures in general were/are like that.
I don´t think Disney (up until recently) was trying to go Bratz/Barbie on the girls. The whole pint behind that was that the girls liked the princesses and Disney just decided to put them together to make a profit.
BTW, if he was going to make this article he should have made research and get to know why Mulan is on the line.

Re: Mediocre Article About the Disney Princesses
What I hate about this kind of stuff is that suddenly no one appears to say the opposite.
...well, until me. I just left this reply:
Regarding Mulan and that 90% of the movie it´s spent putting women down.
...you do know that is a portrait of the role of the women in Chinese culture, right?
Also, precisely the whole point at the end of the movie is to prove regardless of that role what she could do.
Besides, it wasn´t that far away that women got to vote in the US.
As for the article in general, Disney just made movies based on fairy tales nothing more. If any complaints have to be made go back in time and tell the authors your point of view.
Do you think it would have been better for Disney if they showed the actual consequences of the stepsisters and stepmothers of Cinderella in the real tale?

There is no "real" tale. Disney used the Perrault version of the tale and in that one there was no cutting feet or blinding.DC Fan wrote:Do you think it would have been better for Disney if they showed the actual consequences of the stepsisters and stepmothers of Cinderella in the real tale?
