The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition - Fall 2013
Re: The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition - Fall 2013
I'm not saying old art is bad, it is mostly far superior than anything Disney produces now, but I take offence at snipping bits and bobs here and there to merge into one crappy piece of art.
Re: The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition - Fall 2013
I see what you mean, and why it makes you doubt the marketing team.
But a picture like this:

This concept art is so atrocious to me, the setup, the design of Ariel, the lines, everything. Images like this ruin the classic Disney. So this whole childish approach ruins what the film has built up in the 90's, with the original filmposter and the mature look.
So the fact that they used this pose of flounder is not really the first thing to worry about.
For all I care, they use everything of this poster for every piece of clip art that is released today! Then I would have faith in the marketing team again.

^I always liked the original theatrical poster far more than the 1990 VHS cover.
But both are rather phallic.

Re: The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition - Fall 2013
Honestly, I love just about every poster/art that features Triton's palace and/or Ursula's tentacles. Plus, the arrangement of the 1990 poster is great, with Ursula pointed towards Ariel and Triton towards the human.
(I love the arrangement of the 1994 re-release poster as well. Ursula is amazingly drawn there, even if her coloring is screwed up just like in the Platinum/Diamond covers--her coiling, teeming tentacles are amazingly featured and I love that they add the spying aspect to the cover. Plus, both the 1990 and 1994 accentuate the scales on Ariel's tail you don't actually see much in the film. It's only too bad they actually screwed up the VHS cover for the 1994 re-release, by making Ursula look so hideous, even though I liked her positioning over the title.)

I think it's fate. My favorite film has everything I love.enigmawing wrote:But both are rather phallic.

Er, not to nit-pick, but did you mean the 1997 re-release?Disney's Divinity wrote: (I love the arrangement of the 1994 re-release poster as well.

And can you link to the poster in question?

I used to collect the tall inserts included with the audio cassettes/CD blister packs and hung them on my wall back in the late 80's/early 90's. I can't even find an example of them online now, but they usually had larger versions of the album art.

Woah, I've never seen that soundtrack cover! That's really nice. Very much in line with the BatB soundtrack cover, which is one of my favorites.

Disney is awesome, and was the biggest part of my childhood.

What you two are talking about are called "longboxes". The purpose they served was to allow music stores to transition from vinyl records to CDs and Cassettes without having to replace the store shelving. It also allowed customers to browse the same way they would records.

Here's another version of that same image but used for the German 1990 vinyl record:

Ah cool, I had no clue what they were called so thanks for the info.The_Iceflash wrote:What you two are talking about are called "longboxes".
Most of the Disney ones that I recall weren't in actual cardboard boxes, but in clear plastic blister packs that contained the artwork on a paper insert (there was a hole in the top so they could be hung for display in the stores); when you flipped it to the other side, you could see the cassette or CD contained in the bottom.
Er, and I didn't mean to get this so far OT; back to your regularly scheduled thread.

It could be the 1997 re-release, I'm not sure. It's the one where the picturewas given as a commemorative lithograph if you saw the re-release in theaters. I also have the poster version of that picture.enigmawing wrote:Er, not to nit-pick, but did you mean the 1997 re-release?Disney's Divinity wrote: (I love the arrangement of the 1994 re-release poster as well.

Also, it's strange, but I also have a small version of that picture/poster that came in the mail before the re-release, that looks slightly different than the finished version (mostly Ariel's face and Flounder). I can't remember what magazine, but I think it was Disney Adventures (? whatever it was called).

Not so much new information about the movie or anything, but have just discovered this interview from a few years back with Jodi Benson; thought ya'll might like a listen....

It's pretty. The clip-art is what it is and it's girly, but you get what I mean. I do like how they used bubbles for the days. I just wish they'd have had more characters than just Ariel. I believe I have an old calendar from years ago (it used clip-art, too, unfortunately), and it had Triton on one page, Ursula on another, the sisters on another (I think), Eric on another, and of course Ariel on 3 or more. I do hope they have some good merchandise released.

That clipart that mirrors the 3D Blu-Ray cover is the best!

Interesting how they are actually pitching it as the '25th Anniversary'......has that even been acknowledged before ?

Yeah, apparently, Disney thinks Ariel is the only marketable character from the movie.thelittleursula wrote:Oh yay a Little Mermaid calendar ! I hope I get Eric or Ursula for my month though I wouldn't mind Ariel....

I actually like it. I think it's the first time I saw Ariel in her mermaid form, with the new design.
