Are there any Pan & Scan titles you refuse to buy?
Disney made the unfortunate decision to release many of their live-action films in Pan & Scan only, rather than releasing them in the OAR and educating consumers about why the films had "black bars."
Here is a list of the various films that Disney hasn't released in the OAR:
http://www.ultimatedisney.com/panandscan.html
Some films that I would love to own in the proper aspect ratio, but refuse to buy in P&S include:
- Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo
- Herbie Goes Bananas
- The Strongest Man in the World
- Son of Flubber
- Follow Me, Boys!
- Return to Snowy River
- The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes
- The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again
- The Muppet Christmas Carol
- The Muppet Treasure Island
- Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
- Honey, I Blew Up the Kid
- Snow Dogs
- Blackbeard's Ghost
- George of the Jungle
- Three Men and a Little Lady
- Ernest Goes to Jail
- Ernest Scared Stupid
There are probably other titles that I would also want, but I am not familiar enough with them to include them.

I would definitely buy <i>Tom and Huck</i>, <i>Man of the House</i>, <i>George of the Jungle</i>, <i>Air Bud</i>, and <i>Honey, I Shrunk the Kids</i> if they were widescreen. As it is, I'm relying on a couple of releases from other regions, and I'm just going without on the rest.

I hadn't realized that some of them were available in other regions in the proper aspect ratio... I may have to finally get an "other region" disc to put in my poor little Apex 600-A...Luke wrote:I would definitely buy <i>Tom and Huck</i>, <i>Man of the House</i>, <i>George of the Jungle</i>, <i>Air Bud</i>, and <i>Honey, I Shrunk the Kids</i> if they were widescreen. I very rarely buy TRUE pan/scan jobs. (I think i've called those abominations sometimes
)
(On the other hand if it's an open matte 4:3 version, I'm mostly ok with those if there's no alternate widescreen edition anywhere cus i can create the hard matte myself on them and seen them back in OAR)
I may make exceptions in pan/scan if its a very rare or obscure movie that i really really want to watch, and i know it'll be forever before it gets a non chopped job. Usually Disney films don't tend to fall in this category cus even with moratorioums they have done a good job (at least on the animated classics) since I've been getting them in widescreen for nearly 10 years now so slowly but surely they might get released in widescreen.
The other exception I do is for "research"
For example, I have the PAL pan/scan of Sleeping Beauty (in addition to the widescreen
) cus being cropped, and full frame, the cropped part of the image actually has 2.78 times the resolution of the same segment on the NTSC widescreen version for example. So I can examine the details and image structure or just enjoy it too
(Since Sleeping Beauty is a large format film (Technirama) i wanna see all the detail it has
) Besides, you can do a splice of both images and you can get an image thats 87% as good as the one you would have gotten from a HD-DVD Sleeping Beauty. TODAY. (not a Blue one, i mean the other, lesser, let's forget about it, kind
)
(Imagine deathie in a white lab coat mixing strange digital brews and saying It's Alive! Alive!
)

Primarily interested in:
- The Muppet Christmas Carol
- The Muppet Treasure Island
- Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
- Honey, I Blew Up the Kid
I do agree on the OAR issue. I would really fancy seeing these titles released as SE's with some nice features. A making of featurette and some deleted scenes would suffice. I really enjoy the Muppet Christmas Carol.

Hey! my multi is an Apex 500-Alittlefuzzy wrote:I may have to finally get an "other region" disc to put in my poor little Apex 600-A...

if you wanna see it's PAL output you can check it here
http://www.jamesreader.plus.com/dm/palscreen.jpg
the mpeg2 noise is part of the transfer and it "dissolves" in motion playback

Not only you may find widescreen versions of pan/scan jobs on the other side, you may find 16:9 coded discs there too that are 4:3 letterboxed here.

i prefere widescreen, but im not going to let that keep me from owning them. Im just glad to have them on DVD at all! has anyone here seen so dear to my heart, "Its whatcha do with whatcha got." thats my PSA for the day
I hate to bear bad news, but i recently purchased at press sheet from the 1972 re-release of the Misadventures of Merlin Jones, and it was in fact Widescreen. so dont think because it was originally made for TV that its automatically full screen.

Blackbeard's Ghost -- this is one of THE WORST P&S I have ever seen. It was bad on the VHS and it's just as bad on DVD. Because my parents love the movie and would rather watch FS than WS (dad "doesn't get" the black bars), I bought them a copy for Christmas last year, but only because I got it for $8. It's one of my favorite live-action Disney movies too -- Peter Ustinov is hilarious in it, but I refuse to buy it for my collection until it's released in its original aspect ratio. Are there any Pan & Scan titles you refuse to buy?
Muppet Christmas Carol -- Love this movie too, and watch it every Holiday season, but I can't stand the P&S.
The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again -- not as good as the original, but the Conway/Knotts comedic pairing is always entertaining to watch. I'd like to own it, but not until there's an alternative to the P&S.
Ernest Goes To Jail -- It's baffling that BVHV would release widescreen versions of "Ernest Goes To Camp" and "Ernest Saves Christmas", and yet not to do the same for "Jail"? It's an inexcusable mistake. I watched this movie when it first opened in theaters and it's so much better in widescreen.

The original aspect ratio of the theatrical release of Robin Hood is actually the same as the DVD release of the movie, according to http://ultimatedisney.com/oar.htm
And even though it's technically fullscreen, it's not (as is commonly mistaken) pan-and-scan. However, the video quality on the DVD has much room for improvement -- some parts look grainy and/or washed out. And they could do a LOT better on the audio quality.
I agree that it needs to be re-released as a Special Edition. I absolutely love the film -- I even dubbed the movie onto audio cassette and take it with me to listen to on road trips (and I'm planning to burn a CD copy of that cassette very soon).

I Think the disney movie that i don't buy in in pan&scan that are avalaible now in my country is sleeping beauty. who remebers an old post of me, remeber that i told that i don't like so much this movie, but beign a so famous disney movie, is worth having it in my colection, but not the pan scan version
The promblem here in brasil is: disney never release the dvd with choice of the screen (like it is in the us, this movie you can watch it in wide ou PeS format) so they made the choices, so because that our sleeping beauty is pan e scan and so the brother ber is that pseudo wide screen pan e scaned in 1.66:1.

Return To Snowy River is available as a Region 4 DVD (2.35:1) Anamorphic Widescreen Director's Cut at:
http://www.devoteddvd.com.au/man-from-s ... wy%20river
This Director's Cut has the wedding scene restored to the film.
Disney had the wedding scene removed just before distribution.
If your DVD player can be unlocked to play any region DVD you can find the instructions at:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks
This clip cuts off the very beginning of the wedding scene, so to see the whole scene you'll have to buy the Region 4 DVD.
