The Should I Buy [Insert Title] Dvd Thread

I was browsing in used record stores today and found a limited issue Pinocchio for about $14. It was in ok conditon with a few scratches on the disc and some wear on the paper cover. My question is, do i buy this dvd or will i just regret owning it if a r1 special edition dvd is released?

If you really must have the DVD now, then $14 is a great price (if it is playable).
However, chances are that the SE will be released in the states sometime soon. (Surely it would ?) The Rescuers has now been given a release date in the US, and it is identical to the Australian/UK versions we have had for years. Similarly, Australia is now seeing the release of many previously US-only discs. In other words, all discs will eventually be offered worldwide (it is the nature of the business...).
And if Pinocchio is anything like the one released in R4 and R2 (which were identical), then it is a much better version. The film has been restored for a start, plus you actually get bonus features (which are quite fun).
Still if you really want to watch the film on DVD NOW, that is a good deal. But you MIGHT regret it later unless you are willing to spring for a new copy.

I wouldn't buy it, even though $14 is a good price. I still have not bought the Lilo & Stitch DVD, in hope that the CE will come soon.

If I were you then I'll buy it. And when a new version of the dvd comes just give the one you have away or sell it. Thats what im gonna do.

I'd buy it if I were you. $14 is a good deal, and you get to watch it in pristine digital clarity (yes, I do love this transfer) between now and the time the SE comes out instead of having to resort to a Very Horrible Standard copy. Plus, if Disney handles the re-release like they do their other re-releases, you'll get a $5 upgrade rebate, which will make your price for the current disc $9. As I'm sure you know it's a wonderful movie and it really does have a great transfer (though I am looking forward to seeing the restored print) and it's certianly worth $9.

IMOHO there's not much difference between the original R1 DVD and the new restored edition.

i would buy it, it's cheap!
in holland is the SE edition released on 26 march, and i don't see any difference between them the SE has a few extra's

I would NEVER rent a disney movie on vhs! in sweden all disney-vhs releases are dubbed, that's why i buy dvd's or laserdiscs.
I told my friend abut this Pinocchio dvd and he's going to buy it. I can always watch it over at his house. I am planing to buy the Laserdisc boxset in the future, that way i will have the film in my collection and when the SE r1 dvd is released i will buy it.

Btw today i found a sealed 101 dalmatians, $20 is a pretty ok price right?

when i buy that one i will have ALL upcomming platinum editon dvd's on either Laserdisc or dvd!

They are big and cumbersome but i still love them along side my DVD collection.

If your set is from europe lets compare to see if our bonus materials are similar. All my box sets and individual laserdiscs are from the United States except for Song of the South which i got from Japan.

The main selling point of the Special Edition release is the film restoration. However, as anyone who has seen the current Pinocchio disc will tell you, there was very little wrong with the existing transfer. I'm sure the new restoration much have improved the picture (so well done to Disney for investing in restoration work) but in practice their is very little to seperate the old and the new discs image wise.

The "Special Edition" release has the following supplements:

- Sneak Peeks (Not really an extra)
- "A Wish Come True: The Making of Pinocchio" [*]
- "Figaro and Cleo" Sing-a-long [**]
- "Little Wooden Head" Sing-a-long
- "The Search For Jiminy Cricket" Set Top Game (Pluto and Figaro short as reward)
- "I'm No Fool... Having Fun" Short (Introduced by Jiminy Cricket)
- "I'm No Fool... With Fire" Short (Introduced by Jiminy Cricket)
- Storyboard to Final Film Comparison
- Original 1940 Thearical Trailer

Also advertised on the Press Release, but not included on the final disc was a Restoration Comparison.

[*] This runs for about 5 mins. I have been told it is an edited version of the documentary which is on the Laserdisc set which runs for 20-25 mins.

[**] This appears to be the mid-section of the Silly Symphony "Figaro and Cleo" short. It would be nice if the whole short was included.

As for the sing-a-longs, why no "I've Got No Strings"? Surly the most well remembered and catchy song from the film? I'm distinctly underwhelmed by the supplements choosen for the disc.

Used imported US laserdiscs are quite easy to come by in sweden from collectors and on ebay-type sites. Some stores that used to sell LD's before dvd have few in stock for insane prices. I whent out and got Cinderella 1disc CLV for about $2.50 and the Star Wars Defenitive Collection laserdisc box for $30. Almost all laserdiscs in sweden where imported from the US, as far as I know no swedish laserdiscs where ever made.

The Pinocchio laserdisc box I am refering to is i guess 10 years old with nice suplements, litographs and cd.

My goal is actually to collect most of the LD box-sets.

For 14.00, I'd buy it. hopefully it won't skip or anything. If you buy the SE later on, at least you have the older copy. You could probably sell the older copy on e-bay later for a much higher price. You can't beat the deal.

All i can say is the box sets are worth collecting the wealth of material on them all is amazing. With DVD taking over the sets should be easier to find as some people just want to get rid of them and replace them with DVD, good for us bad for them.

SETHP How many do you have right now?

Your pinocchio set sounds like mine with the CD soundtrack as part of the set which i really liked.

Where did you get your LD player?
I have not been able to get the Star Wars Definitive collection yet but i have often wondered how good it is. I have the Special Edition Boxset that i bought when it was released in 97 because it was a limited run.

I only have one Disney-boxset so far and that's Hunchback of notre dame.

The SW defintive collection is quite good, the movies are in there original versions and in CAV so you need to do a lot of discfliping and changing discs. The bonusmaterial is quite good but nothing compared to a GREAT 2disc special edition dvd. I got my LD player from some guy that sold his player, he also included a 2disc CLV release of the Star Wars (the release with darth on the front cover) i got both the player and the film for $100. The player isn't all that good i am going to upgrade some day.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame set is really good considering it was the last of the box sets. The cover art is Awesome.

My favorite part of the boxsets is always the Character Designs, Art Design & Concept art. This is something i hope i can do someday be part of the creative force behind animated productions the reason i am back in school. Its a goal of mine and i realize it may never happen but im sure going to give it a shot what have i got to lose by trying.

Hi there!
I have finally begun my collection of Disney classics!
I got Snow white and Beauty and the beast yeasterday!

All the movies that is going platinum I haft to wait for, but all the
other ones that only exits in Gold edition should I get them now
or wait until them come out in other versions?
But I don`t think them will come out in another edition for a long time..

Should I get Pinocchio, Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty special edition
or wait for their platinum releases?

Congrats on those initial purchases...you are well on your way to the poorhouse

As for the question of whether to buy now or wait, well, that depends on you. if you are looking at a title that you know will be re-released in the next couple years...and can wait that long...then wait. Personally I have not been able to do that, as I have a daughter that is still young enough to enjoy these movies often. The only current title I do want but am waiting on is Lilo & Stitch, as I heard early on that a potential Special Edition was a possibility.

So the bottom line is how bad do you want the movie and can you wait on a Special Edition or Platinum Edition if they are scheduled. If you love 'em and can't wait...go get those current editions. You can always upgrade later
