Disney Animation on Blu-ray in 2013

Okay, out of all the Blu-ray releases coming from Disney soon, Lilo & Stitch/Lilo & Stitch 2 has to be the one I look forward to most for two reasons:

1) I regained love for the first film while I was down in Florida for the Disney College Program.

2) Out of all the Disney sequels, Lilo & Stitch 2 is my favorite.

This means that, aside from the package films, there´s only 5 movies left to be released on BR:

1. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

2. The Sword in the Stone

3. Robin Hood

4. The Black Cauldron

5. Oliver and Company

Of course, I´ve discarded movies that although not yet released will be on BR.

Oliver & Company is DEFINITELY long overdue for a new restoration. Hopefully we'll get that when it comes to Blu-ray.

From those left Oliver is the most recent one and was a success for Disney. So I wouldn´t be surprised would get released soon.

However, given the fact that back then Robin Hood and The Sword in the Stone got re-releases before Oliver shouldn´t take you by surprise they may get released first.

Oliver & Company is DEFINITELY long overdue for a new restoration. Hopefully we'll get that when it comes to Blu-ray.

I don't think we should expect a much better looking version than the recent DVD release of Oliver & Company on blu-ray. The film's style is deliberately very washed out and graffiti-esque. It's not meant to look pretty and clean.

Well, they should at least clean it up a little and give it a decent restoration. It's the least they can do for such an aged film such as Oliver and Company.

Wow, so many blu-rays coming out...I'm getting behind in getting these...

I predict/hope the following for August/September:
- The Sword In The Stone, Robin Hood, Oliver And Company, Return To Neverland

October/November:
- The Little Mermaid, Little Mermaid 2/3

And the rest for 2014.
If Winnie The Pooh will be released this year (which I'm starting to doubt) I suspect they'll also release Piglet's Big Movie and Pooh's Heffalump Movie.

Oliver and Company is actually my least favorite Disney film. Don't like Billy Joel and I'm not that big on this adaptation of Oliver Twist. I'll get it for completeness purposes but I'm not going to watch it nearly as often as the others.

No seriously though, I'm guessing you want to know US release dates for Aladdin and Tarzan? There's no release date at this moment. So yeah.....

So far here's the list of unannounced Blu-ray titles in the U.S.:

The 6 package films
101 Dalmatians
The Sword in the Stone
The Jungle Book
Robin Hood
The Black Cauldron
Oliver & Company
Aladdin
Hercules
Tarzan

We KNOW that 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book will be released eventually (probably the 2 Diamonds in 2014). So that leaves only 13 films still not on Blu-ray, only 7 if you don't count the package films.

Haha--looking at this list it looks as if Disney has screwed themselves into a corner with only one "princess film" left. Aladdin has Jasmine and that's it for the princesses....what's Disney gonna do??!!

...as said, in Spain we haven´t got Treasure Planet, Home on the Range and The Great Mouse Detective but we know they´re released. Just wondering when they will be available to us.

Price may have had something to do with that... But then, so would the lack of advertisement, coupons, push, etc. Disney confuses me.

"Nobody wants these movies! Dump them all on one day with no special features or advertising! Put those sequels with em and mark up the MSRP! Nobody likes these anyway... Grumble grumble."

A week or two after release day:

"Why are these not selling!? Quick, cut the MSRP on the next batch!"

I think at this point it's solely a matter of getting these releases out one more time on a physical format and selling as many copies as they can. That's why the quality of these releases continues to drop, and probably why the price has dropped. They're just squeezing the very last drops out. Which is sad, because I really feel that if they put some decent effort into them, people would be less eager to move towards digital distribution. I know I would.

It's no surprise they're most likely seeing lower sales than expected, because they're alienating people. The two biggest demographics that buy Disney films, the casual fan/family and collectors, don't see a big enough draw to upgrade. The casual family is less likely to upgrade to blu-ray in the first place simply because a majority of them don't care enough to rush out and do so - they'll live with their DVDs. And the collectors, who are far more likely to upgrade, aren't being given enough of an incentive to do so. It's gotten to the point where literally the ONLY incentive is the HD transfer. While that's enough incentive for some (myself included, in many cases) - most collectors are looking for releases like Beauty and the Beast and Snow White. Something really worth spending their money on. Great cover art, great bonus features, disc art, etc. And Disney just isn't doing that, so people aren't buying. And because people aren't buying, Disney puts even less effort into the releases. It's a vicious cycle.

I long for a day when someone who truly understands these films takes over at Disney Home Entertainment.
