I feel bad for not seeing a few of the other shorts, but I did expect Paperman to win. Congratulations to the new technique.

I'm happy for Paperman. It definitely was Oscar worthy. I'm sort of torn, though, because I thought Adam and Dog was technically better and I connected with it more. But they're both excellent, and I'd be happy whichever won. I just hope Disney takes note and does more things in the Paperman vein.

Or, from the sound of it, a quick detour for another short but in color. But hopefully a feature soon after. Just do it Disney. You have people's attention, time to push it even further.

I expected Paperman to win. The voting for the category opened up this year, it received plenty of publicity when it was released online, and it was perceived as a Pixar short by the press and the audience.

Personally, I was rooting for Head Over Heels. Although Paperman was visually intriguing, it felt very redundant and banal thematically. In any case, I hope Paperman's Oscar win will finally persuade Disney to pursue a feature in this hybrid form.

When was the last time a Disney animated short won an Oscar?

It had to have been from when Walt Disney was still alive.

The last Disney short to win the Oscar was It's Tough to Be a Bird in 1969. It was awarded to Ward Kimball.

a producer of Paperman got Temporarily thrown out of the Oscars

If your film wins an Oscar, you may need to resist the urge to celebrate with any kind of physical display beyond clapping, smiling or crying, or risk being tossed out of the theater by security. This was a lesson Paperman producer Kristina Reed learned the hard way during last night's Oscars. One of the producers of the charming, Oscar-winning Disney animated short was temporarily removed from the theater by security when she reportedly began throwing a few paper airplanes out into the audience after the short won its Oscar.

If you've seen the Paperman animated short, which was released before Disney's Wreck-It Ralph last year, then you understand the significance of the paper airplanes. The story follows a man who meets a pretty woman on a train platform, and later attempts to get her attention by flying paper airplanes from his building to hers. From what THR reports, it doesn't sound like Kristina Reed was trying to disrupt the ceremony when she reacted to the short film's win by flying three or four lipstick-kissed paper airplanes from her mezzanine seat. She wasn't near the stage.

Security apparently didn't find the demonstration of her enthusiasm so charming though, and promptly removed Reed from the Dolby Theater auditorium. A bit of protesting brought her back five or ten minutes later, so she didn't miss much. In the meantime, those who might be considering bringing confetti or some other physical display of enthusiasm in the event that their movie wins an award in the future might reconsider that plan.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about how you came up with your character designs?

John Kahrs: I felt that they could be Disney, but in a very slender, more old school way. I used [101] Dalmatians as a jumping off point. But there’s a lot of Ariel in Meg because Glen [Keane] was in there messing around, pushing that design to get it to work. A lot of what we did on Tangled taught us a lot about fitting baseball-sized eyes into humans [laughter]. It’s actually not very easy. I could go on and on about how to make these things work in CG. Actually, you can break those rules nicely when you go back to 2D. But I’m very happy.

George was kind of tough. I wanted him to seem like he was dateable [laughter]. He was a big-nosed guy but there was something cute about him. They [He and Meg, the female character] would seem like peers, that she would go for him, in that Adrien Brody kind of way [laughter]. But there are a lot of other faces in there. A young Anthony Perkins or Roger from Dalmatians. When you give your design to some of the designers, to finalize them, they are probably looking at a whole bunch of other people you never even thought of. And they won’t ever tell you. I almost don’t want to know.

Q: Did your final film come close to your original ideas?

John Kahrs: The reason the film is called Paperman is because, there used to be, in that alley, what formed was a man, and his job was to bring them together. He was a hero character. He flew around the city, very mysterious. When he finally got them together, his work was done, so he disintegrated into the wind, with this kind of bittersweet lifecycle. But whenever I pitched it, people would go, “Whoa, whoa! Who is this guy? I don’t like him!” [laughter]. So I killed him off.
