Merida is designed to be an anti-princess: in fact, in the movie Elinor says the word "princess" like that's all she really is, and it makes Merida really sad. So be in the Disney PRINCESS group that's going to be odd and fascinating to watch.

Hopefully Disney Consumer Products understands that the main reason people like Merida so much is because she is above a princess a fascinating character that appeals to girls for the main reason that she is active, free and fun. Putting in the group that likes tea parties, dresses and such does take that away bit.
Of course Disney will remain faithful to her personality! Can't you see the great work they've done with Tiana?

Tiana dreamed of being a princess - till she realised cooking food is more fun than having someone cook it and serve it to her then she decided to become a chef when she grew up.

Yup. Merida's going to be assimilated and have her personality replaced by generic sweetness.

Apparently, Disney was planning to include Merida into the Disney Princess line all along.

November 19, 2007
Also on tap: adding new princesses to the core lineup [...] Disney plans to introduce a new African-American princess called Tiana in an animated film, "The Princess and the Frog," a response to demands for more diversity among princesses. Two other animated princess-based movies -- one starring Rapunzel and another starring a Scottish princess in a new Pixar production -- will be rolled out after that.

Merida is being added because she will be considered unique. She does not feature the usual Disney princess "trope." No Singing, so leading man, no love story etc.

When compared to previous Disney heroines, Disney has different reasons why they add them to the franchise.

Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora are the classic Walt era princesses and are part of the Disney history. Yes Sleeping Beauty did not do well at first but it gained popularity and importance later.

Ariel, Belle, and Jasmine were part of the Disney rebirth of thee 90s. Pocahontas...well somehow she made it in even though Pocahontas is not exactly a popular Disney film. Pocahontas is often cited as the one that started the downturn with Disney. Mulan on the other hand has a better reputation compared to Pocahontas. yes she is not a princess but Mulan was well received by critics ad audiences compared to Pocahontas, the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules.

Tiana, Rapunzel and now Merida are part of the new era of the Disney princess. Tiana is the first African-American princess, Rapunzel is the first CGI princess, and Merida is the first princess created by Pixar.

Maybe this is part of the reason why Princess Shayla from Power Rangers Wild Force wasn't included after the Disney buyout of the Power Rangers franchise; they'd have to pay Ann Marie Crouch lifelong royalties. Well, I think she'd fit in quite well with the princesses...

I was actually hoping she would be added for these exact reasons. :D

Further proof that Merida will join the Disney Princess line.

She has been featured in the official Disney Princess magazine.

She has been included in merchandise with the other Disney princesses.

The updated Dsney Princess smartphone which will be released in 2013 features Merida.

The clip-art of Merida shown on that smartphone is this one:

Most importantly, she joined the other princesses in materials promoting the Disney Princess brand at this year's Toy Fair.

They have used the following clip-art for the above image, gave her a circlet and added sparkles on her dress.

I'm sorry but Merida looks horrible in hand drawn, I know shes not supposed to be the most attractive heroine, but she looks great in CGI, the clip are truly makes her hideous.

I think she looks just fine. I think she looks like the hand drawn version of the meet and greet character, which I quite like.

Recently, they updated the princess website, and removed all traces of the old one, right down to the animation and games, and I have a feeling I know why: Merida.

The old site lumped them all into a set of standard games: tea parties and dress up. No matter how arbitrary it was to the character or not, they ALL got the same kind of games. It seems Disney wants to diversify the princesses rather than to lump them all into one mind set (ironic considering all the new looks they have been getting).

Merida is a character that is, in a way, anti-princess. She does not dress up (and when she does it is by force), does not fall in love, she is not 100% royal all the time, she is different. She wouldn't be on the site talking about tea parties and dressing up. Plus the old site had all the princesses cluttered, so adding an 11th to it would have been a design mess.

3D-to-2D clip art is awful most of the time.

I still don't see where is the point to see Disney Princesses with all that glitter and modern girl hairstyles... I mean, all people and children who likes them is because how they are in the movies. Pocahontas with pretty earrings? Mulan like a China empress??? REALLY? and Merida, oh my god xD she's nothing like that.

They would make a lot of money if the merchandise were like in the 90's.
For example, I had action figures of Ariel, Pocahontas, Mulan, Esmeralda, Kida,... etc. yes ACTION FIGURES! And they're a thousand times better than the new glittery pinky dolls. I would die to have nowadays an action figure of Rapunzel and Merida =(

You think so? The Disney Princess line has probably influenced the public perception of the characters more than the movies themselves.

And I am pretty sure that their current approach is getting them a lot of money already. Only reason why this cancer is still around, really.
