Oz: The Great and Powerful
Do we think that this film will do as well as Alice, or fall short ? I know Alice was a bit of a surprise with it doing as well as it did, but do you think Oz can come close? There is certainly buzz around the movie; have yet to hear any reviews.
Personally, I enjoyed Alice but I was surprised people took to it as much as they did.

I think Alice was successful because of how awesome the graphics looked in most advertisements. I remember seeing the scene where she falls down the Rabbit hole, and being very interested (even though Alice is not my favorite story or anything). Similar to why Avatar was as huge as it was, too, I'd guess.

Also it was another Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration and those always do well.Disney's Divinity wrote:I think Alice was successful because of how awesome the graphics looked in most advertisements. Ahh yes I forgot the Tim/Johnny element. Though for me, having Johnny involved was an irritant as it become Johnny Depp The Mad Hatter In Wonderland. Burton has amazing visions when it comes to movies, and he certainly created a feast for the eyes with Alice...but it fell down with having too much Johnny; without whom Burton seems nervous.
If it isn't immediately super duper crazy successful like Pirates/Alice/Avengers, will the franchise possibility be cut short?

I don't think it has to be quite THAT big, but it certainly needs to do well enough. Or we'll have yet another start to a franchise that never gets off the ground.atlanticaunderthesea wrote:If it isn't immediately super duper crazy successful like Pirates/Alice/Avengers, will the franchise possibility be cut short?

Well, Tron: Legacy didn't come close to numbers of the movies you mentioned, but they're still working on a sequel. I guess it depends somewhat on their expectations. Tron: Legacy is a sequel to a cult film that isn't massively popular these days, so $400 million is great (helped that its budget didn't exceed $200 million).
However, if Toy Story 3 also made $400 million worldwide, that would be considered a disappointment, because the expectations would be much larger for such a brand name and a sequel to two movies that are still hugely popular.

Sometimes I think things do need time to develop; maybe the first is an establishing film, then later ones can delve deeper.
Like the Tinkerbell films; they didn't sell as well as hoped, but with each film the series gets better and better, and the films have done better as well, being allowed to become established.

Some reports from set visits are starting to make their way online. Here are two so far. One from Capone over at Ain't It Cool and another from Becky Kirsch over at Buzzsugar. Capone says that he will be posting some more from his set visit and to expect another post next week.

I've seen of pictures of Mila and Rachel in there Witches outfits and Rachel's outfit has red in it, since she's The Wicked Witch of the East is she going to wearing the Ruby Slippers and will a certain house be falling on her in the film? Also I saw the Winkie Guards in another pic and they look exactly like the 1939 guards.
