Don't know. I was considering the odds of that happening myself. Ratatouille has been converted as well, but we haven't seen a re-release or BD to showcase the conversion.

I am absolutely gutted by this news! I was so excited to see my all time favourite movie back on the big screen (regardless of 3D)

I really think it would have been successful, more so than the previous few 3D re-releases. I was also thinking there could be some great cross promotion between this and Frozen both being based on Anderson fairy tales. Never mind, I suppose we're still getting it on BluRay. Hopefully one day I will be able to see it on the big screen again!

Are we sure its been canned and not just delayed? I mean, beauty and the beast got delayed a ton of times here in the states. Even thought to be canceled at a point. They do just say "its previously announced 3D re-release on September 13, 2013 is no longer happening." It doesnt say its not still coming at a later date.

That's really sad news... But I hope they have made the 3D conversion by now and will release it on Blu-ray at least! Perhaps a straight to 3D Blu-ray release (without any theatrical re-release in 3D) could work for movies like Aladdin as well?

All this discussion of the new cover art possibilities got me thinking of one I remember seeing that eventually got scrapped when they were releasing the 1997 re-issue on VHS. This is about as good of a close-up as I've ever found of the un-used artwork. You can see that it says "cover art subject to change". Anyway I find this might be a good idea for them to use (something similar) for the next release because it's not an in-your-face close up and it has a variety of characters.

Wow! I like that much better than the one we got of just Ariel picking that flower! The only thing wrong with it is when the hell did Eric have a sword?! Other than that its great, exactly what I would want!

This is 2005/2006 all over again. When TLK and BB underperformed on Imax and Disney scrapped The Little Mermaid as well... Urgh!!!

I'm just hoping the Blu-ray is still scheduled for a 2013 release. I'm gonna break in tears if they push it back to 2014. I've waited so long for January 1st 2013 to just say "TLM is coming out this year"!

I was watching it the other day and thinking about how a lot of the backgrounds would have to be redone altogether, as they were painted very flat and have little to no depth. (Not complaining, I love the art, just saying it doesn't seem to fit well with the idea of immersive 3D)

Perhaps. And maybe also the fact that they're more hesitant now that Monsters Inc. flopped.

They didn't seem to have a problem with converting The Nightmare Before Christmas which wasn't a CAPS film either.

Yeah, but being stop motion, Nightmare was technically live action images so the objects on screen were three dimensional to work with. A LOT of the background art in Mermaid is very flat 2D paintings that would look odd in 3D unless redone here and there.

I'm sure the real reason though is just that Disney was disappointed all the 3D rereleases this past year didn't perform Lion King business.

That played a BIG role. The fact that the 3D re-release of Monsters Inc. failed to make even $40M (which is what BatB and Nemo made) pretty much killed the 3D release of TLM.

I was really bummed by the news too. I thought Disney's idea of re-releasing the Pixar films was a terrible idea to start with. They should've made the 3D re-releases exclusive to the Disney Renaissance movies... had Aladdin and TLM been in MI and FN's places, it would've done better.

It wasn't helped that FN, BatB and MI were still available on DVD either. The moratorium on TLK helped elevate its re-release status... I think Aladdin and TLM would've enjoyed that boost as well.

That sucks. Oh well. I also think putting the Pixar films in 3D was a bad idea except for the Toy Story double feature. I would have loved to see Aladdin and The Little Mermaid in 3D and in theaters.

I don't know how it was ever decided that monsters inc of all things decided the fate of mermaid and possibly other future releases. Their so focused on seeing patterns that were never there in the first place. They couldnt be more different if they tried. Different types of movies, different dimensions. Last I checked 3D is not a genre. Even less so than animation.

Maybe not, but converting a film made in caps is easier than one shot directly on film, and converting a computer animated film is even easier than that. And cheaper!

Now, as far as Nightmare...yes, it was probably complicated and expensive to convert it to 3D, but that film was already a cult classic at the time, and had/has a big built-in audience. Plus, the plan for it was to re-release it for 2 weeks EVERY halloween. No just once in theaters...

Im not surprised TLM got dropped. I think it was a wise decision, regardless of how I MIGHT feel about the movie.... it wouild have flopped.

I knew back when they started 3D that B&tB would not make the same numbers as TLK and then Disney would probably scratch the whole thing, but I thought since TLM was so close to the top that it might slip by. And it seemed like it was going to, when they said 3D wasn't going to continue, but Mermaid would still be happening. Ah well.

Extremely disappointed. Still, I'm sure it'll be back in theaters sometime in the next 50 years (even if it's something like El Capitan), and I'll see it.
