Surprised at the inclusion of Pirates and annoyed by the lack of token foreign films. They don't have a shot of winning but I like using the Oscars to filter out the notable ones.

Other than that, pretty much expected.

I do like the idea of the Academy giving foreign films a chance, but I guess they couldn't find any notable nominees this year.

On the nominees, I highly doubt Pixar will win this year. Brave was far too mediocre (a step up from Cars 2 but not really worthy of an Ocaar). Frankenweenie was okay as well but that won't most likely win either. I haven't seen any of the other noms so I can't say any other way (However Paranorman does not interest me at all so I hope that does not win)

Of the best animated short I am also kind of baffled to how The Simpsons theatrical short got nominated. It may have been interesting, but I guess they must had a hard time picking nominations that they picked this one.

I'm honestly putting my money on either ParaNorman, Frakenweenie, or Wreck-It Ralph. Brave and Pirates don't have chances of winning!

Even though I'm rooting for WIR, I think ParaNorman is going to win.

Ugh. I was hoping Frankenweenie wouldn't get nominated. I'm sure it is a fantastic film, but my friends and I make it a habit to watch all the noms in the "Big 10" (Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Animated Feature, Foreign Feature, Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay), and I just can't bring myself to view it at the moment. The wound of losing my six month old puppy in auto incident last month is still too fresh. Wish I had seen in october, but I was too busy to make it to the city (no theatre in my hick town).

*sigh* Maybe I skip tradition.

Anyway, hoping ParaNorman wins as I truly loved that film. Brave is my runner up pick.

I have a suspicion that Wreck-It Ralph is going to win. Why?

Despite Brave being Pixar, it was met with so-so reviews and nobody was really putting it on the best Pixar movies list.
Pirates wasn't really talked about as much.
Paranorman and Frankenweenie might possibly be considered a little "too dark" to win.

Wreck-It Ralph has been compared to a Pixar movie in terms of characters and concept and it has some of the unexpected moments (such as the twist at the end) and the friendship between the two main characters.

I do want to say even though I did like Brave better than most people did, I'm kind of glad to see that Pixar's not winning another Oscar this year. I'm sorry. Pixar has made good films I won't deny that, but I feel like there have been better animated films that could have won the Oscar instead.

I think these are five fantastic animated films. I'm probably in the minority here but whatever.

I am SO glad to see Dreamworks overlooked while Disney walks away with three nominations. Nothing makes me happier than seeing Katzenberg's ridiculous Oscar campaign for Guardians crash and burn. He began shopping it around back in September or something. This is just karma.

I agree with you, Patrick. This is a wonderful bunch (though I haven't seen the smaller ones. Really want to check out From Up on Poppy Hill).

It's interesting how this year, the Animated Feature category did a complete 180 from last year. Last year, GKIDS and DreamWorks got two spots apiece, while Disney got nothing. This morning, GKIDS and DreamWorks didn't get a single nomination, while Disney had three films nominated.

On the nominees, I highly doubt Pixar will win this year. Brave was far too mediocre (a step up from Cars 2 but not really worthy of an Ocaar). First rule of Oscar predicting: Leave your personal opinions at the door. I didn't care for Spielberg's direction on Lincoln as I found it too workmanlike, but I still think he has a very strong chance of winning.

Frankenweenie definitely has a very strong shot at winning, as does ParaNorman. It's certainly a three-way race between those two and Wreck-It Ralph.

Kind of dissappointed that "Rise of the Guardians" didn't get nominated, especially considering that "Pirates! Band of Misfits" took its spot. Pirates! is a good movie, but Guardians is a great one. I'm also a bit iffy on "Brave's" nomination, but at the very least it's a solid film. However, this race is really a 3 man one and hopefully "Wreck-It Ralph" takes it home. I love "Paranorman" my 3rd favorite animation of the year and wouldn't mind it winning either. Watched "Frankenweenie" last night and it's good too, a step above "Brave," but I'll be a bit disappointed if it wins.

Off topic, but why didn't Affleck get a directors nomination?

Wreck-It Ralph has a strong chance of winning. Best Animated Feature tends to go to the populist pick, which is Ralph this year. But ParaNorman is the critical darling and Frankenweenie is the sentimental choice. All three could win (I think Ralph is winning the Annie, though).

I believe Adam & Dog is still touring the film festival circuit as is Head Over Heels. Paperman is, of course, playing with showings of Wreck-It Ralph and will be on the Blu-Ray/DVD. You can legally watch Fresh Guacamole on YouTube, while cam bootlegs of The Longest Daycare are also on there (I'm surprised that short wasn't included on the Ice Age 4 Blu-Ray).

Every year, they've been showing the animated and live-action shorts on a packaged bill before the ceremony. So, be on the look-out to see if they come to your area. I haven't gone before, but I plan on going this year.

The last time I agreed with the Oscars was in 2007 for Ratatouille. Paranorman probably the favorite now.

I'm even more upset about the Best Animated Short nominations. I can't believe shorts like the Fresh Guacamole and the Simpsons short got nominated over the other immensely better shorts.

I don’t know how that’s worse than the Pixar bias, but okay. They’ve had several films (including Brave) that deserved being snubbed, and yet somehow get pushed through. I’m sure karma has a plan though.

Thought the first half of Persepolis was absolutely brilliant. It kinda fell apart a little when they shifted the focus away from the war for a bit, not too enthused with the protagonist's personal life.

This year's animation awards race is quite intense, since usually, it's one or two film that really stands out. 2007:ratatouille 2008:walle 2009:up 2010:toy story 3 2011: rango (and tintin, until the nominations were announced)

but this year, we have 3 strong films, and any can win.
