Frankly, I'm offended. Offended! What with Disney's explanation for Tangled's title change (Rapunzel wasn't the main character! Flynn was every bit as important! It would have been misleading to call it Rapunzel with Flynn being just as important to the story!), I've come to completely realize that said title change wasn't a sexist marketing ploy. After all, it isn't like they were going to change another classic, century's-old, easily recognized fairy-tale's name...oh, wait. Hi, Frozen! But, Wreck-It Ralph? What a TERRIBLE title! I expected better from Disney! This film isn't JUST about Ralph! Vanellope is every bit as important! This film should have been called GAMED Or ARCADED!*

*Sarcasm.

I'm looking forward to going and seeing this hopefully this weekend. I'm really intrigued about the King Candy character.

Exactly. And that song is entirely innuendo. Which seems inappropriate given that families are one of the target demographics for this film. I'm glad my kids are still young enough that this will go over their heads.

(edited my initial comment because on reflection is was both illogical and stupid)

I don't listen to her, so I had no idea the song during that scene was her song. I just thought it was a random pop song they had the rights to. I didn't even pay attention to the lyrics, as my attention was focused entirely on the characters and what they were doing.

So, no, I didn't have any problems with the scene or choice of song.

It could be worse. At least they aren't putting Train's "Drive By" in the movie, right? That's so much worse than any of Rihanna's stuff.

   And I don't even like her.

Having a pop song at all would sound awful in a Disney movie in any other place than the end credits, tbh, just because pop music is so disposable these days that viewers 10 years from now will be cringing when they hear the song (if they weren't already. ). I might get a chance to see this while it's still in theaters, depending. I'm strangely prepared to enjoy it; it seems like it would be a decent film, regardless of how I feel about some of the designs and chosen voice actors.

Took my kids to see it this afternoon; while it'll never be a song I like, "Shut Up and Drive" didn't bother me nearly as much this time around.

Is it me, or did anyone else think King Candy sounded a bit like Ed Wynn's take as the Mad Hatter?

Wynn definitely came instantly to mind. Wouldn't be surprised Alan Tudyk modelled the voice after him. In fact, it was probably intentional. I was half-expecting him to say "Mustard? Let's not be silly."

I picked up on that too!

I saw the movie last night at midnight as per usual for a new DAC. I enjoyed both the film and the short, though not at the transcendent, blow-me-away level in which I enjoyed last year's Pooh film and Nessie short - which, in hindsight, may have certainly been the high point for my love of contemporary Disney animation.

I also didn't get into it as much on the first viewing as other recent DACs like Bolt, Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Meet the Robinsons. But that is not an insult, as I feel, and have said, that Feature Animation has really been on a roll since Robinsons, blowing me away with each release and usually making my favorite animated film of the year (and often overall fave as well) although the "Academy" certainly saw it differently.

It felt more like a Pixar film to me than a DAC, which is not necessarily a bad thing, and interestingly symetrical with the fact that many elements in Brave felt more to me like a DAC than a Pixar film!

If it were a Pixar film, I'd rate it towards the middle of the pack; not as highly as my faves, but I enjoyed it more than, say, WALL-E or Toy Story 3.

As someone who grew up in the classic "Atari Age" of classic video games, I definitely enjoyed the homage to so many arcade games from that era. I thought the concept was unique and very well executed, and my favorite of the 3 new game environments created for the film was definitely the candy-colored Sugar Rush (supposedly "girl-targeted", lol).

I thought the film had a lot of heart, which I of course have come to expect from DACs and Pixar films.

One thing that was kind of a turn off was some of the humor and diologue seemed a bit crude for a DAC.

But anyway, overall I enjoyed it and, as per tradition with DACs*, I'll go back a second time later in the run to pick up on details I missed the first time and get a more crystaline opinion after a second viewing. This is especially necessary this time as I was really tired during the screening after a long day.

* (I enjoyed Pooh so much, I saw it FIVE times in theatres before it left!)

Anyone see this in 3D and was it worth it? I want to see this movie but don't have a lot of money so if it really doesn't add anything to it, I'd rather save some money.

Q: When did you start thinking about special features and extras for the DVD, and what do you have planned?

Rich Moore: I think, for this, we’re going to make a little live-action film, in the style of King of Kong, about the guy who held the high-score record in Fix-It Felix and how it ruined his life. Phil Johnston, who’s the writer, is going to play the guy, and he and I are going to make our own live-action short about that guy. That will be on the DVD. And I think we’re going to try to make a little short starring the Nicelanders, all done in 8-bit animation, about what their life is like in the Niceland apartment. We didn’t start planning those things until about two months ago. Now that the movie is finished, we’re like, “Okay, what can we do?”

Q: You've mixed many visual styles in the film, but one thing I wondered: were you ever tempted to put any live action into the film?

Rich Moore: There was a point where we though maybe the arcade world should be live action. We thought that for about a week, and then we talked with John Lasseter. And he said no, it's an animated film. This is not a live action film, this is animation. Let's just do great humans for the arcade scenes. And you know what? I went to school for animation, I didn't go to school for live action. I love this medium. So I'm glad we went this way.

Okay, I'm just back from watching the movie, and it was a lot of fun. While I did recognize some of the most popular videogame characters, I'm not a gamer so most references just flew me by, which is why I was ready to judge this movie solely on its story, and it didn't disappoint, true it might not become an instant classic but it is a worthy entry in the Disney canon.

Speaking about the music, I did find it a little weird the use of Rihanna's "Shut Up and Drive", but it wasn't too distracting and the scene is relatively short, and I really liked Skrillex track during the bug hunt.

And the whole thing between Sgt. Calhoun and Fix-It Felix absolutely adorable.

I saw it today, and enjoyed it in 3D! I felt it was worth it.
If you enjoy 3D and/or want to see it in 3D, I say go for it.
Of course, it's just my opinion, and 3D isn't everyone's cup of tea.

This is a review from a Simply Disney Thing web:

MY SPOILER-FREE THOUGHTS ON WRECK-IT RALPH

”I’m bad and that’s good, I will never be good and that’s not bad, because there’s no one I rather be than me.”
I will just flat out say that I loved Wreck-it Ralph - video game references and all. From the very first moment when the Walt Disney Animation Studios logo turned 8-bit, I knew I was in for a treat. In comparison to other Disney films, Wreck-it Ralph felt like Alice in Wonderland meets Monsters Inc. and Toy Story.
Wreck-it Ralph tells the story of 9ft tall Ralph, who has been the destroying the Niceland’s apartment complex for over 30 years in the game Fix-it Felix. Ralph’s journey to become a hero takes him to different worlds, where he meets a variety of interesting video game characters, who all have big personalities. A majority of the film is spent in Sugar Rush, a 1997 kart racing game that features the pint-sized Vanellope Von Schweetz. However, Ralph’s decision to go “Turbo” causes Fix-it Felix to be flagged “Out of Order”. So, Felix finds himself on a journey to find Ralph and save his game.
Without giving away too much information, I will say that this film threw me on an emotional roller coaster. One minute you’ll find yourself laughing at subtle video game references - like Ralph finding Mario’s 1-up mushroom in the lost and found - And in the next, you’ll be fighting back tears. On an emotional scale of 1 to Toy Story 3, I definitely felt it edging its way towards TS3.
That being said, the film is visually stunning. The games and their lands are immersive, inviting, and felt playable. There are so many characters, gags, and little Disney references, that I feel I will have to see the film multiple times just to catch everything. In addition, there as a lot of physical humor. John C. Reilly (the voice of Ralph) claimed that they recorded him acting out various scenes. So when watching Ralph, I saw a lot of John in there. In fact, it felt like I was just watching the voice actors dressed as video game characters. Take for instance Jack McBrayer, he is Fix-it Felix. And Jane Lynch? I don’t even think she was reading a script. This was something that I loved because the characters felt real. Not programmed.
While I enjoyed the visuals, the music did an incredible job bringing together these games. Over time, video game music has developed from 8-bit, 16-bit, fully orchestrated, and so on. For me, I was mainly interested to see how they would tackle something like that. Disney brought in a variety of artists to make themes for these games. Skrillex (who makes a cameo in the film) did an amazing job putting that modern feel into Hero’s Duty. AKB48 provided the perfect theme song for Sugar Rush, which is a kart racing game from Japan. Makes sense, right? However, I must say that the best on the soundtrack is Buckner and Garcia for bringing to life the Wreck-it Ralph theme. Buckner and Garcia are best known for their 1980s song called Pac-Man Fever. It only seems right that they’d sing a song for Wreck-it Ralph, which is supposed to be a 80s arcade game.
Overall, just get the soundtrack. It’s only $7.99 on Amazon.
My biggest complaint about the film? While I enjoyed being in Sugar Rush because it was delicious and fun, I felt that the film took off in a different direction. The beginning of the film showed various games at the arcade, their characters, and purpose. I loved that the Bad Guy meeting took place inside of Pac-Man and I thought it was clever that Ralph went to Tapper when he felt upset. But the video game references turned into candy jokes the minute Ralph goes to Sugar Rush. I honestly didn’t have any issues with this because the jokes were hilarious. I just missed the video game gags that were very dominant in the beginning.
Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed Wreck-it Ralph and I highly recommend it. I feel that Wreck-it Ralph has the potential to reach out to everyone and not just video game fans. I went to the midnight premiere and I was surprised at the age groups. There was an older gentlemen who looked at least 60, there were teens, young adults in their 20s, and so on. I can already tell that kids will eat it up and I am positive that Ralph and Vanellope merchandise will fly off the shelves during the holidays.
I’m excited to see what’s in store for Wreck-it Ralph.
Be sure to:
1. Look for the Mickey Mouse billboard near Litwak’s Arcade
2. Stay after the credits for more 8-bit
3. Bring tissue… AND candy.

I'm Hooked. This Movie is Awesome. It's probably now on my top 10 of Disney Animated Classics. I loved it. I want to go see it again in theaters. I haven't laughed this much from a Disney Animated Film in quite some time.

However I'm wheelchair bound, so probably going to see it by myself isn't happening right now. Darn herniated discs.

Also the short Paperman, definitely Oscar Material.

My villian senses were defiantly right about King Candy being the next Lotso.I was wrong about the other Sugar Rush racers but King Candy defiantly is just as bad as Lotso.Actually I think he is worst than Lotso because at least Lotso has a more sympathetic excuse while King Candy's is just pure selfishness. :x

In that way he makes a good foil to Ralph because King Candy is like the personifaction of selfishness while Ralph at times goes on becomes the embodiement of what it is to be selfless.Which shows what makes a hero in the long run because being a hero means actually doing something for selfless reasons.

*Major Spoilers about Wreck-It Ralph*

A thought just came to me today. I wonder if DreamWorks Animation will think about renaming both the title and lead character of their upcoming movie "Turbo", about a snail who wants to become a racer. With the villain of this movie being a racer also named Turbo and Wreck-It Ralph still being fresh in peoples' memories, well...it's going to strange seeing characters referring to a nice racer snail as Turbo.

This movie is now tied with Tangled and Lilo and Stitch (which I love for completely different reasons, so I can't really compare them) for my favorite Disney movie of the century thus far. It's clever, surprisingly heartfelt, and just plain fun. :D I had massive expectations for this and they were still exceeded. It's probably one of my personal top contenders for the best animated movie of the year by far.

The best part is it's probably going to be a huge success. Seriously, it seems like most people I know are eventually going to see this movie, and it appeals to multiple demographics due to it building on the nostalgia factor of seeing beloved video game characters on the big screen. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this movie became Disney's highest grossing film ever.
