Oscar for Best Animated Feature 2012

Madagascar probably would not have made it in even if it were really amazing, simply due to the fact that sequels have a tough time making the cut.

The only one I haven't seen yet is Frankenweenie.

So far this year has been adequate, nothings been totally bad and most of them are solid to good, but I can only think of one film that is truly great. It's sad that Arietty doesn't qualify, but even if could, it's not Ghibli's best, but it is one of the better films of the year.

For me "Paranorman" is the best of the year so far and I genuinely think even in a great year this would be a strong contender.

As for the top 5 I would go with
Paranorman
Brave
The Lorax
Pirates
Hotel

However, the last 4 are very loosly placed. Hopefully Ralph and Gaurdian will change it. I wouldn't mind a couple foreign movies entering the list.

Arrietty had no business being nominated 2 years after it was first released. I am a stickler for this, though, always been annoyed that they follow US release dates instead of original release dates for foreign movies.

Sounds like there is no selection process. They just paid some money and got an award. Ta-daaa.

I've never even heard of all these awards. The critics awards are the ones that count and I'm pretty sure Paranorman, Wreck-it Ralph and Frankenweenie are gonna clean up those. Guardians only has two reviews out right now and they're both saying it's 'okay'.

But watch Guardians win the Golden Globe because of their campaigning though. The Globes can be bought.

PatrickvD is pretty much spot-on. The Hollywood Movie Awards are pretty much just a publicity machine. I found another article on the awards and Quentin Tarantino pretty much admitted it was bought, since he won Best Screenplay for a movie he's still editing!

I'm personally glad that they moved the user ratings to the main ratings area, because I'd rather see those ratings. Although, I don't necessarily base whether or not I'll see a movie because of its ratings.

I personally think Howl's Moving Castle is better than Spirited Away, but that just me of course. It's different for every person. Out of the films I've seen, I quite enjoyed Hotel Transylvania and Brave, with Ice Age 4 and The Pirates rated as good.

Here's is a composite I made of all 21 films in the running this year! Can't believe how many there were to hunt down that I had had yet to see.

Just finished The Rabbi's Cat & thought it was great, about to see Zarafa & I'm excited about that. Going to a screening of Rise of the Guardians next week & I'm stoked! Also going to see The Painting this week during the LA Animation Film festival & I'm so jazzed!

Why on earth is From Up on Poppy Hill being nominated for nomination? It was released in Japan in 2011 and hasn't been released in the US yet.

If a film is released in another country the year before and given a qualifying run in Los Angeles this year (which GKIDS plans to do), it's eligible. So, yes, under Academy rules, Up on Poppy Hill is allowed to compete.

Well, it's an American awards show. So they go by the American release date, even if it quietly playing for a week at one cinema in LA counts as a release (which was what GKIDS apparently does).

I’m surprised nobody responded to this, actually. Replace “Dreamworks” with “Pixar,” and we would’ve had a lynch mob on our hands.
