Halloween Viewing Log 2012!

The leaves are turning yellow, and Walmart and Costco have been stocked with Halloween and Christmas crap for over a month now. Let's get this party started!



You all know the drill, watch as many movies in the run-up to Halloween, and report what movies you watched here.

Whatever way you do it, it's all game. Some people just watch 31 movies during October. Some start watching early and watch as many horror/Halloween related movies as possible.

Yeah, I know, I'm a few days earlier than I was last year. But with the leaves turning yellow, I'm in the mood start a little early.



1. Jaws (on Blu-Ray) - kicked off this season with Jaws, the new Blu-Ray of Jaws. All I can say is the PQ and AQ is fantastic. The best restoration of an older film I've seen on Blu so far. Highly recommended. And what can I say about this movie? Still makes me jump in a few parts. Awesome!

What's your take on ParaNorman and Hotel Transylvania? Are they good? Was considering seeing them. Would like to know what you thought about them.

What's your take on ParaNorman and Hotel Transylvania? Are they good? Was considering seeing them. Would like to know what you thought about them.

Both are good, funny and heart felt films but are very very different. ParaNorman is more an 80's style PG with some jokes that may be naughtier than you may expect as well as genuinely scary and/or macabre moments, some BIG twists, along with a message about bullying in multiple ways, regret and forgiveness. Hotel Transylvania touches less on the message they are trying to send out but it does have a story about a father learning to let go, with racism/racial profiling being touched on as well. It is also overall a great big classic Looney Tunes style cartoon. It's much more predictable that ParaNorman is but really made me laugh a lot. It really depends what kind of film you'd like to go see. Despite both being animated monster movies with a message or two they are very different films with very different tones. I'd say see them both but don't try to compare the two.

The Game

Ok, technically not a horror, or Halloween movie, but probably the best thriller ever made. I saw this opening weekend back in the fall of 1997 during my first semester of college. This is probably David Fincher's best. I included it in my Halloween viewing this year because it's a creepy, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride (the piano music makes it even creepier). The only problem is, this is a one-viewing movie because of the twist at the end (like Fight Club or American Psycho) - probably the reason why this was my first viewing after all these years. Recently released as a Criterion, albiet pricey, I was finally able to add it to my library of movies. An excellent movie to include in a Halloween movie marathon. Two big thumbs up.

Predator

Decided to watch some alien movies this year, however, watched the Alien series in the run-up to Prometheus, so I decided to visit its sister franchise, Predator. A great 80s Arnie actioner with some great oneliners. And more gore, more gore than the 3rd in the series which I'll watch in a few days. The PQ and AQ on the Blu is pretty good.

Looks like I won't have much time watching movies this year as I'll be super busy to the end of October with job hunting and completing a number of safety tickets. But, I'll try to watch what I can.

Predator 2

Decent follow-up. Not as many good one-liners as in the first. Bill Paxton pretty much acts the same way he did in Aliens. Liked the Alien skull in the trophy display case - the early hint of a possible AvP movie which eventually happened.

AVP Franchise

Of the two, I think I prefer the first one. In the 2nd, too many of the Alien/Predator fight scenes are too dark and can't make out much. In the first one I liked the changing pyramid/labyrinth idea. Having met Lance Henriksen earlier this year at the local comic expo made this viewing of AVP much more cooler. I still wouldn't mind a 3rd in this series as it is set-up for one. We get Weyland in the first, and the second ends with Yutani, for those of you that are Alien franchise fans.

Dark Shadows

I missed it in the theaters this summer so it was a blind buy. It was better than I thought. Really enjoyed it.
Barnabas Collins: "The Collins have always held the biggest and most expensive balls."
Roger Collins: "That's what I've been saying, this family needs more balls!"

I have to say, this movie was not really that funny (Then again I never saw any of the duo's acts). The only thing I really liked about this were the monsters.

Not a bad cast in this one. I like it better than the 2nd.

I don't know if I liked it more than Predator 2 but I think that a sequel to this one could be incredible.

One thing I found really striking about this film is some of the unique locations. I'll have to watch this one again... my wife hasn't seen this yet.

ParaNorman

Caught this at the theater today. Very good! I really enjoyed. Although I wouldn't recommend it to kids as it had quite a few adult jokes.

Interesting. Unique. And just like any early 80s horror flick, it has boobies! I laughed at Thor's Evel Knievel stunt gone wrong.

Blood Diner

Anyone seen this gruesome, funny and cheesy 1987 gore-fest comedy? it's very similar to Re-Animator, the Tales from The Crypt story "What's Cooking" and HG Lewis films. I saw this when i was 14 and found it disgusting yet amusing. It's about 2 cannibalistic chef brothers who bring back their dead uncle's brain in a jaw with eyeballs completed as they are ordered to make a diner that will serve quality meals for the city to enjoy as at night they mutilate people to make a human jigsaw puzzle to appease a blood goddess they worship as later on they will do a ritual to bring her back to life but in the meantime, they use the human remains for their meals to serve to costumers to eat.

It's gory fun but not for the politically correct[/b]

The Haunted Mansion

And the clock strikes 13... for my 13th movie I picked the Haunted Mansion. It's an alright movie. I like seeing all the ride references. I do hope Guillermo del Toro gets around to rebooting this and see what he comes up with. Whcih makes me wonder, whatever happened to this planned reboot? It seems like it fell off the radar.

He's still working. I think he sent in a draft last month. Thing is he's a very busy man and Disney seems to be waiting on him hoping he will have time to be the director as well as the writer/creative mind behind it.

Just a great ghost story. love it. This is just my second time watching it. Haven't seen it in awhile and actually forgot about the twist at the end.
