Rewatched the trailer video.

-I lol'd how in such a European-ish kingdom there is a black peasant. Yay for shitty political correctness.

-Then later on it shows a scene of a school of little kids that seems comes from all different ethnic races (an Indian, an African, another African decent, etc). I wonder if there is a Muslim in this show. He probably loves blowing shit up like Sofia's toys and animals, and drawing nothing on a blank piece of paper of his idol.


-I'm very tempt to watch this show just for that little blonde loli brat. She give me the impression of a snotty little bitch that needs a back hand pimp slap across her face.

this is going be a badass show.

While this isn't the highest quality animation in comparison to a DAC, its pretty decent compared to daily/week animation programs.

I would have to imagine that the higher the quality, the more expensive to produce. Compare the SFX on something like The Avengers and something like Smallville. Using Avenger-caliber SFX on each Smallville episode would be prohibitively expensive.

So, I'm not expecting something on Disney Junior to look as amazing as Wreck It Ralph or even Prep & Landing, which are one-time gigs.

I don't think this is a new phenomenon at Disney either. Go back and compare the animation on your average Duck Tales episode to that on the short Trick or Treat and there's no comparison.

From what I saw in this trailer, it looked like they stayed on model, but the models weren't all that impressive.

Agreed. My daughter is 3 years old and she will absolutely love this.

Will I enjoy it? Probably not. I don't enjoy Handy Manny or Jake and the Neverland Pirates that much but any time there's a new special for either of those shows, it's like a national holiday in my household.

When we went to WDW last year, she and my son were beside themselves that they got to meet Jake and Handy Manny. They keep asking to go back to WDW.

My daughter also loved BRAVE. She must ask every other day if we can go see it again (I think she's seen it four times and she's absolutely terrified each time but can't seem to get enough of it).

So while these type of programs aren't the greatest, I like them for what they are: feeder programs for the next generation of Disney fans. Which my kids are quickly becoming.

I can tell you I defianlty would persuade them to see this show if they have a TV in their apartment.

i'm double-posting here, but have you seen The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network? That's near cinematic quality right there. probably more expensive, but still a tv show on a tv budget.

Indeed I have. I don't know that I would go so far as to consider it as "near cinematic quality", but I see your point. It definitely is one of the better made cartoons out there.

I was comparing Sofia the First to something like Dora the Explorer.

I actually laughed out loud right at the end when Sofia goes off to school or whatever and the cute little rabbit says "you go girl" with deep African American voice.

Vocal inflections that mismatch the setting are nothing new for Disney . . .

Let's see, there's Honest John in Italy, Christopher Robin in the UK (in Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree), Wart in England, Little John in Sherwood Forest, Mushu in China, Terk in Africa . . . and those are just the ones that immediately come to my mind.

they call it cel shading. It's not something used very often-mostly for videogames based on 2D cartoons maybe-and it wouldnt be used for DACs.

You know what I was thinking? I think Sofia the First might be a rebirth of those Disney Princess Enchanted Tales episodes that never materialized beyond the first DVD. You know how everyone, even the most die hard Disney fan, criticized those episodes because they got the characters wrong and the stories were bad? Well, I believe that Sofia the First could be a semi continuation of that series without having to resort to the actual Disney Princesses and still sell them and the princess concept.

Here's what I mean...

First, there's Sofia. Sofia is meant to represent the princess in all girls (or if you want to turn it into something more cynical, she's the Mary Sue). So what better way than to create a character that is likely the same age as the target audience without having to rely on a pre-existing character to do so! In other words, she is a blank slate that the writers can screw up erm I mean DEVELOP and not have to compromise anything for it.

But wait! What about those Princesses everyone loves? They won't be the stars, but this is clearly a Disney Princess inspired series! Never fear! Let's have them make semi rare appearances on the show and not only have her be friends with Sofia but they will teach her valuable lessons about being a princess (geez, writing that made me reinforce the Mary Sue concept even further). So, you have the fan service in place.

Finally, this is a show for pre-schoolers, so they have to lean something. You know how both Aurora and Jasmine kept pushing the idea of perseverance and sticking to it? Sofia is now the one to learn those lessons and still have enough educational value so that it isn't branded completely as a money maker.

And there you go. Sofia the First is the spawn of Disney Princess Enchanted Tales.
