While some fans are sad about this, I say it is about time the show ended. Doug already did everything he could with the character, he already reviewed some of the most infamous and notorious nostalgic movies, he was already diving deep into movies that are mainly "meh" at best, affecting his material. Plus like he said in the video he already made over 250 episodes of the show. That's double of what the Angry Video Game Nerd has achieved so far. And that also includes three movies he wrote and directed. So yeah, I say it is time to move on.
Also, the other reason I think he should move on already is because I have the feeling that the wacky/angry/comedic internet reviewer fad is slowly coming to an end, or at the very least it isn't as strong as it was back in the mid 2000s when both the AVGN and the Nostalgia Critic debuted. Many of the most well known have retired to do something else, or their quality isn't as fun as it used to be. Add to that countless unfunny imitators and the charm is just gone.

Nooooooo !!
His funny reviews always cheered me up during the rough weekend. He was like a pill of anti-depressions to help you get through the week.
I didn't always agree with what he said. Example I adore the Pebble and the Penguin and Ferngully and he thought that they were basically crap; but oh well opinions are opinions and he still made me laugh during those reviews.
He surely be missed.

I'll admit I really enjoyed watching the Nostalgia Critic (even if I never watched all the videos). I know the show is not everybody's taste. I did see the announcement and on one side I don't want him to stop. There were a lot of films that I really wanted him to review.
In all seriousness, however, I think it's a good idea that Doug Walker decided to quit (or end if you prefer) the show while he was ahead. He made a video every week for four years which totals to 220+ videos. I look forward to see what he has planned for his next show, even if it does not turn out to be as successful as the Nostalgia Critic.

I think the last time I watched a Nostalgia Critic review video was a couple of years ago. When I was new to the NC videos, I watched some and before long I got tired of how overrated people were making the guy and him and Nostalgia Chick kept badtalking movies I'm fond of without pointing out the good in them.

I couldn't have said or typed it better myself. Since I have been through this back pain that won't stop ever, it's hard for me find things to enjoy anymore. Nostalgia Critic was one. I'll miss the segment, but I'm interested in what this new project is.thelittleursula wrote:Nooooooo !!

I don't know, I kinda see a difference compared to "No more Nostalgia Critic?" Versus "YES! NO MORE NOSTALGIA CRITIC!!!"TheValentineBros wrote:YES! NO MORE NOSTALGIA CRITIC!!!
I can't say I'm a fan of Nostalgia Critic myself, but it'll seem a bit weird now that he's stopped reviewing movies.

I'm a tad disappointed but he pretty much hinted at it a while ago. I can totally get why he'd want to move on. With The Wiz, Temple of Doom and Scooby Doo he was obviously wrapping up with some notoriously awful/stupid films that people had been begging him to do.
Besides, I've been digging Nostalgia Chick a LOT more the past year. Her analysis approach with themes like feminism and gender stereotypes are both thoughtful and hilarious and she's not nearly as predictable as the critic. Her Charlie's Angels video with the burkas was pretty damn funny.
There's more to it than just laughing at stupid crap. Because the critic has pretty much made fun every retarded thing from the 80s and 90s by now.
Just my two cents.

No, but the way you posted it seemed pretty harsh. I know you're not a fan, but it's still uncalled for. It's like if Bono, and I posted "Good riddance". Despite my feelings towards the man and his band, it'd be disrespectful towards those who do like him and his work.TheValentineBros wrote:Dude, I wasn't being an ass. Anyway, while I personally was a fan of the Critic, he hasn't been as entertaining as he used to be in the past couple of years. Retiring the character is probably the best for him.

Hey, I just hate the Nostalgia Critic and I am glad it's cancelled, so please... I have to express feelings.Avaitor wrote:No, but the way you posted it seemed pretty harsh. For example, if there is news that a show I hate gets cancelled, I am entitled to express my satisfaction about it and vice versa.

This just shows how infamous these Channel Awesome people really are. That may seem odd since in hindsight, these are just 20 to 30 somethings making fun of bad entertainment. Yet, when I first discovered the Nostalgia Critic in 2010, I dove deep into the fandom and ended up watching nearly all of the people on the site. By 2011 I dropped out of that fandom ASAP. Why? Because I felt I was diving deep into a fandom that promotes the false illusion of success.
I think the internet is a place where you can easily convince people you can be successful, when rarely any of that success transcends over to the real world (yeah I know stuff about Fred and Annoying Oranges, but those are super rare cases). Many of the contributors have HUGE egos about themselves and believe they are better than anyone else. That at first seemed charming, but later on when you see the type of content they produced, it was either mediocre or just plain bad. I hated how these reviews would just become huge fan service pieces with Mary Sue elements where the reviewers were these saviors of the universe, or poorly implemented stories into critical pieces (The Dark Nella Saga, for starters).
Then there was the mentality of avoiding criticism from fans. And I don't mean stuff like "Oh my god, the movie was great, you suck and you should die!!!!!", I mean actual criticism of how they delivered the content, the movie they reviewed, facts they got wrong etc. Doug Walker had this character that was basically a straw man argument character called Douchy McNitpick. He is a parody of the anal fanboy that gets excited over nothing, criticizes everything and does nothing but whine. On paper, it sounds legit as every fandom has a fan that tends to over analyze everything to the point it loses meaning. But what I noticed is that people seemed to take him as a point to never criticize anyone on the site, cause they will get mocked and ridiculed.
It got bad to the point where fans would often say "I hate to be a Douchy McNitpick, but..." before correcting the reviewers. This is why many people tend to hate the reviewers at Channel Awesome: because for all the criticism they dish out, they can't handle any of it themselves. And I don't mean small points of criticism, I mean BIG stuff like forgetting someone's name, incorrect facts about the production, mistakes in the video editing process, so on and so forth.
These are people that claim to be professional, to have gone to film school, to have all these degrees in literature, language and sociology, to have theater experience and more. Yet, someone points out a fact to them and it's OUR problem? The third "mistakes" video he did had some HUGE mistakes that should have been corrected. Yeah, people claim that he "acknowledged" the existence of his mistakes, but it was done at the expense of the fans that made him famous in the first place.
In addition, there was a passive/aggressive condescension not just on Doug but on many of the reviewers on the site.. When Doug did his infamous Let's Play, he made a commentary that at first apologizes for the video... but then does a 180 and says that people took the video too seriously to begin with. First, it further illustrates just how these people can't seem to accept any criticism from the fans, and when they address it, it is always in a passive/aggressive manner. Second, he criticizes fans for taking the video to seriously when many people on the site tend to take things WAY too seriously to the point of real anger and frustration (Angry Joe, I am looking at you...).
To further elaborate on how these people seem to avoid criticism, our own TonyWDA did a video response to MarzGurl's review of Atlantis:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/epflAX4O13U" frameborder="0"></iframe>
A lot of people came out and said that her review was indeed a flawed one, and came out as one big whine fest rather than an actual piece of film criticism. So much so that people posted the video on her Facebook page, and decided to completely ignore the video and not respond to Tony or address any of the claims he made. So again, for people that claim to be experts of criticism they don't want to experience any of it themselves, fueling the growing hatred of this community.
And it seems that the site may be beginning to rot from the inside out due to tons of drama between the reviewers, leading many of them to either quit or be fired. From example, The Distressed Watcher (aka the Amazing Atheist on YouTube) quit because he felt that they were taking sides with the reviewers (the guy wasn't that popular to begin with, though). Then recently, they fired Spoony from the site after he sexually harassed one of the female reviewers on Twitter, and he was one of the biggest reviewers there. He seems to have been on a steady decline ever since he was diagnosed with heart failure, his girlfriend dumped him, and now the firing which has affected the quality of his work greatly.
All of this may seem odd to mention since this IS about the Nostalgia Critic. But I am mainly illustrating why people like ValentineBros are happy that he is ending the show now: after all the drama and bullcrap they seemed to harness, it seems that it is the beginning of the end of the site, which leads to a personal victory in the eyes of many.

I agree, everyone has a right to express their opinion, but it's almost like me jumping for joy in Sarah Palin's or Rush Limbaugh's funeral thread.* Sure, I would be satisfied, but it's still tacky.
* I say "almost," because these talking heads or wannabe political figures actually do attempt to affect my life through government, whereas an Internet website doesn't really affect me at all.

Listening to most often lately:
Christina Aguilera ~ "Cruz"
Sombr ~ "homewrecker"
Megan Moroney ~ "Beautiful Things"

That could be said about anything. So, if Justin Bieber retires or when Jersey Shore gets cancelled, I'm not supposed to express my satisfaction about it because you may happen to like them? The same applies with this. People have different tastes. TheValentineBros only expressed his opinion once; he didn't go trolling on about The Nostalgia Critic or harass his fans.lord-of-sith wrote:Is the fact that Nostalgia Critic is ending making your life that much more convenient?
