Why are Disney DVD discs blank?

Post by WarriorDreamer »

Not sure if this is a UK thing but when you get the standard non Blu-Ray Disney DVD's they are always a blank gray colour. Now I don't know about you but half of the excitement about getting out a Disney DVD is the packaging. Watching a Disney DVD and having a blank gray cover and a blank gray disc is nowhere near as fun as having the character pictures and art all over them.

Why do they do this? Is it that they can't be bothered to print a picture? Or is it that it is a marketing ploy to get everyone to move to Blu-Ray? It's bad enough as an adult but what a bore for a child getting a DVD out and it's blank!

What's the deal Disney DVD!!

Doubt it. They've started printing the Blu-ray discs solid blue without any artwork, too. I got the Pocahontas 2-Movie Collection early from Disney Movie Club and the Blu-ray disc has no art.

Really? I could have sworn it was exactly what WarriorDreamer said. :?

Sadly in the modern streaming media age, disc based releases are no longer thought of as events, so they don't feel like its worth putting any effort into any aspect of them anymore.

I want someone to explain to me how they think it's a conspiracy. Like, do you really think people are going to upgrade to an entirely new format just because it had cover art?

I know it's crazy! I could get over pretty quickly but it looks boring! It takes all the excitement and joy out of actually getting the disc out and putting it in.

I would be interested in knowing why they decided to make this choice. Not sure if it has moved to Marvel DVD's yet but for me a blank disc = cheap looking and boring design.

Its another way to cut costs when manufacturing Blu-ray and DVD discs. A lot of companies are doing it now.

I think it's just the same as with anything that Disney does .... starts off well then just deteriorates.

I don't see why they can't print artwork on the disc, it can't cost that much surely?

Well, back in the early days of DVDs, disc art was listed as a bonus feature...alongside subtitles and scene selection.

It has. My Thor and Captain America Blu-rays were blank and blue and the DVDs were blank and gray.

Looks like artwork isn't completely gone. I received Lady and the Tramp 2 today from Disney Movie Club and the Blu-ray has artwork. The DVD is gray.

That's a little lame. One of the original DACs like Pocahontas does not get any art for their Blu-Rays yet a lousy DTV movie like LAAT2 (opinions may differ) does. I wonder if The Aristocats or The Rescuers Double Feature will have any art for their Blu-rays.

I received The Aristocats and The Rescuers today from Disney Movie Club. No artwork on any of the discs, and The Rescuers had stacked DVDs on the left side of the case.
