admiration for Cygnus commander Dr. Hans Reinhardt turns to horror when they
discover he and his monstrous robot companion, Maximillian, plan to turn his crew into
robots and fly through the Hole. As they try to escape, a meteorite shower damages the
ship, and the survivors hang on as they are plunged into the most powerful force in the
universe, heading toward whatever eternity awaits them.

I'll be renting this one before I make any decisions on it too. I know I liked it when I was little, but the 8 year old zue judgement wasn't always great...after all I was adicted to the care bears :o

Even though I'm not going to buy this DVD, it is nice to see they are taking the expense of including a few bonus features.
I heard Disney was going to release a collector's edition LD of "The Black Hole" (one of those Archive Editions), but they dropped the ball when the LD of "TRON" didn't sell well.

I will have to rent this also before choosing to pick it up. I can't remember seeing it when I was a kid.

Never saw it. Tron and Navigator are listed as its contemporaries. I can't stand Tron, but love Navigator, so maybe this one is in between?

Both Tron and Navigator are 80's Disney films but for some reason I like Tron more then Navigator. I guess it's because I recently seen Tron and it's been a long time since I seen Navigator.

We got cable (and HBO) back in December of 1979 and this was run on HBO a lot. I haven't seen it since 1980 but do have fond memories of it and might pick this one up.

I have the first DVD release of this one, if this new one is cheap enough I could rebuy it. I saw this film in theaters when it first came out and always enjoyed it. It has some Disney style elements, mainly in the robots V.I.N.C.E.N.T. and OLD BOB.

On the other hand, there are quite a few non-Disney like elements in the film and a really wacko ending.

Tron was by far a better picture. The reason that the Black Hole doesn't work is that there are way too many story problems. Truth be told, Disney was so excited to work on a space type picture with all the Star Wars hype that they didn't care about the story as long as they could showcase the awesome talents in the special effects department at the studio. I read somewhere that no one knew what the ending to this film would be while it was being made. I can believe this because the plot has no coherent direction. As for the religious trip to heaven and hell in the end when they go through the black hole....let's just say I still don't get it (like the ending to 2001: A Space Odyssey  ). I am glad that Disney is honoring this release with a featurette and am curious as to what they might have in store for it. Will there be any cast interviews, or will it just be the special effects guys at Disney talking? Either way, I'm grateful that they are also leaving the extended theatrical trailer on from the Anchor Bay disc. Honestly, the special effects DO rival those of Star Wars and there are amazing and beautiful matte shots throughout the film. However, due to the story problems facing this picture I only pull it out to watch clips from time to time and listen to the totally awesome and haunting score!

By the way, the Anchor Bay version has the theatrical overture from this picture beforehand. Let's hope that stays as well

Classic '80's: The Black Hole

Post by interactivemojo »

This movie is a great homage to Disney's '80's Faze. And no it wasn't the greatest of movies in terms of story development per-say. But for those of us growing up in the '80s I can definaly say it's part of our history being that in the '80's not alot of product flowed from Disney during those times.
If you want it, I've got it. Need Disney Treasures, Truelife and some series email me for my list.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'm sure I'll eventually give it a chance, but if most consider it to be not as good as Tron, then it's not sounding very promising.
