Barnes and Noble Criterion Sale Coming Up? July 2012

Post by The_Iceflash »

Is there a Criterion 50% off sale this month? They've been having it the past couple July's but nothing has been mentioned yet.

Are there any releases you're going to pick up if it is?

They are. The store's computer system says it'll begin on the 10th of July. I'll be getting "House" on Blu-ray and maybe one or two other titles but I'm not sure what ones yet.

I'm getting 'The Gold Rush' so far.

Well I finally got a copy of Seven Samurai for $25. :)

It's funny, when I bought it, along with the receipt, it came with a list of suggested movies I'd like along with SS- Yojimbo/Sanjuro, Rashomon, and The Seventh Seal. Well I happen to like all of these movies, give or take Sanjuro, so they're not too far off.

I think I'm going to try and go to Barnes and Noble sometime this week to see if they have anything interesting (though I'm guessing most films released by Criterion are pretty great). Any suggestions? I'm curious about Hunger, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 8 1/2, A Night to Remember and Modern Times.

Hmm, what kind of films are you specifically into? There's a lot to delve into with Criterion, so I could give you results from all over the map.

I'm up for pretty much everything except for horror and sports films. I don't think there's any animated films, are there? I like comedies and dramas (I know that's super vague, though). Hmm, are there any that you would overall recommend? Like the greatest of the greats?

No animation, unfortunately. Well, if you want my top 15 or so beginners essentials, I might go with these (and I'm just sticking to what Criterion still owns)

Seven Samurai
Sullivan's Travels
8 1/2
The Seventh Seal
The Red Shoes
The 400 Blows
Ikiru
The Night of the Hunter
Chasing Amy
Solaris
The Rules of the Game
The Gold Rush
Fanny and Alexander
Charade
Jules and Jim
Black Orpheus
Rashomon
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Three Colors Trilogy: Blue, White and Red
The Battle of Algiers
Modern Times
A Woman Under the Influence
Harold and Maude
Stagecoach
Ace in the Hole

...although I just realized that there are more than 15 movies on here.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, Avaitor! I'll definitely check into those (except for The Red Shoes and The Night of the Hunter because I already have those :D).

The sale ends in a couple of days- the 31st, to be exact- so don't forget to pick stuff up while you can.

I got The Gold Rush today. Classic Chaplin and a new release I've been meaning to collect.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, but Barnes & Noble is having another art house/Criterion sale now, but I think it ends by the end of the week.

I took the chance to get The 400 Blows on Blu-Ray, like I've been meaning to for a while now.
