Miyazaki Wave 2 "Indefinitely delayed"?? What's th

I've read on two websites (DavisDVD and TheDigitalBits) That the releases of Miyazaki Wave 2 (Porco Rosso, Nausicaa, and My Neighbor Totoro) have been "indefinitely delayed" by Disney, with no reason given. Does anyone know the real story?? It got as far as cover designs and redubbing, at least!

The Digital Bits is the only one to report this. (DavisDVD just copies stories from other sites.)

Disney's information still shows them as coming 8/31. So, unless The Digital Bits has gotten some kind of scoop (which is possible, but not as likely as it might have been years ago), they're not delayed as far as I know.

Well, as the saying goes, even a broken clock is right twice a day. Just got word from Disney that these have been moved to early 2005, but no reason was given.

It's most likely because of the U.S. release of Howl's Moving Castle next year. It seems practically every Disney DVD release nowadays MUST be linked to either a theatrical film, a tv series, or another DVD. On the bright side, I hope this means they'll receive better cover art because I didn't much like the original ones at all.

I'm not a big fan of this marketing synergy. It's too much "corporate speak" - but this is probably a wise decision in the long run.

The market is becoming saturated with new DVD releases and as a result it's harder and harder for titles to stand out. We all know the trouble most of the people who like to walk in store and pick up their discs have been having getting some of Disney's catalogue releases lately.

Titles have to stand out, not only to purchases, but to retailers too, or else they don't order them. Hopefully a tie-in will give the releases more visibility in the marketplace. And we all want them to have more visibility don't we?

I don't care at all about their visibility, seeing that it means that we have to wait additional months (or years) to see movies that should've been released by now. To me, visiblity means that I can see it on the shelf so that I can buy it, which won't happen for who knows how long now.

Well, the problem is, if the titles were released on the day planned, and didn't sell well (either due to retailer or consumer disinterest) then Disney may not consider it worth releasing any further titles in the future.

Like I say, I'm not a fan of these marketing ploys. I think Anniversary Editions are a waste of time - I don't think people are more inclined to buy an Anniversary Edition over a normal Special Edition with enhanced supplements. But if it means the film gets a re-release then so be it. But I don't think films should be held back a year just to paste "10th Anniversay" on the cover, which by most people's estimates is what's happening to Pocahontas.

I also don't think trivial tie-ins work - are people really more likely to buy an Iron Giant Special Edition just because the director also directs the upcoming Incredibles? I bet most people don't even know what a director actually does, and would be hard pushed to name more than five.

But I do actually think that ultimately holding these titles back to co-incide with the theatrical release of his new film (if that is indeed what the reason is) will be better in the long run.
