What Is Disney Thinking ?

Does anyone have any idea why Disney refuses to release, or to complete, some of their most popular properties ? It's been years for Gargoyles, and as yet, we've seen nothing of the rest of the show. Also, some of their most popular tv shows that they haven't finished. Hanna Montana, for one. Also, why aren't there seasons sets of That's So Raven, or Lizzie McGuire ? At the time, they were two of Disney's most popular series. And there are a multitude of tv movies that they haven't put out yet, like Stuck In The Suburbs, Tru Confessions, the 3 Zenon movies, and a ton of 80s stuff.

Disney realises that they won't make a tremendous amount of profit re-releasing old TV shows on DVD, so they don't go ahead with it. Apparently the reason why they stopped doing Gargoyles was because the last set "didn't sell well". Even the Disney Afternoon sets, which sold well enough for Disney to keep releasing more, had a minimal effort involved (few extras, old VHS transfers etc). For the Disney Channel shows of the DVD era (Hannah Montana, That's So Raven etc), they realised they can still make a profit shovelling out cheap three or four episode compilations with next to no extras, and so choose not to release season sets. The only TV-on-DVD sets from Disney that have really received any sort of attention are some of ABC's hit shows.

As the Head of Open Vault Disney, I've totally got this one. SpringHeelJack is correct, for the most part. Disney's view is that outside of the various (Disney and Pixar) animated classics, and select live action films (like "Marry Poppins), they feel no one cares about the past. Their feeling is new shows and films are where it is at. Even the new shows don't really get full season sets as they feel there is more money to make from skimpy, three to four episodes releases.

That said, (for one reason or another) they do still put out "vintage" titles via their MOD releases and Disney Movie Club Exclusives. From what I have heard, in the coming years we may yet see a return to tv on DVD from Disney. The rest of "Gargoyles" has already been confirmed as having "tentative" plans for sometime this year, as well as the rest of "The Tick," and I understand that both shows that have started being released then stopped and ones that have never been released have been talked about. Due to their over all business plan, they are just timid (and I feel at times) short sided, especially on the Disney Afternoon shows and the various "Walt-era" anthology mini-series. When I look at what Warner is doing with the Warner Archive or even a handful of the other major studios, I can't but help to feel that Disney needs to step it up. But I feel, in time and with enough push, they might just. I think the more they warm up to MOD releases, the better our chances are of getting these shows.

What you need to do if you have not done so already, is if you really feel this passionately about these titles, join Open Vault Disney. We have online petitions starting, we have letter writing events, e-mail writing events, and whatever else to campaign for these unreleased titles.

I wish they'd release Phineas and Ferb season sets on DVD (or on Blu-ray! But that would never happen lol).

I've been making my own DVDs using Netflix and a DVD recorder. These will do until Disney decides to make season sets

Disney put no effort in advertising their season sets, and blame consumers for their lack of sales, despite said consumers not being aware of these releases. You'd be surprised how many Disney Afternoon fans didn't know that sets of a lot of the shows are available.
