Weird Disney Store Experience Courtesy Jim Hill

Post by Jake Lipson »

:o, either some salesperson really needs to learn customer service or something disturbing is going on at Disney Store. Look at this excerpt from Jim Hill's latest article detailing the really wierd experience he had when picking up his Treasure Planet disc at Disney Store. (This is the one reason why I'm sort of glad I don't preorder with them.)
I popped over to the mall to pick up the copy of "Treasure Planet" that I'd pre-ordered.

So I step up to the counter at the Disney Store, hand over my receipt, and ask for my "Treasure Planet" DVD. The woman behind the register says "Okay, Mr. Hill ... but wouldn't you also like to pre-order your copy of 'Jungle Book 2' while you're here? "

This Disney Store cast member then directed my attention to the "Jungle Book 2" promotional materials that were prominently displayed at the store's main sales counter. (Which the store's personnel had evidently just put up that morning.)

I politely demurred, explaining that I'd left my wallet out in the car. Which I had.

This was when this Disney Store cast member did a somewhat startling thing. She actually took the bag that had my "Treasure Planet" DVD in it out of my hand and placed it behind the counter. This woman then turned to me and said "Tell you what. I'll hold onto to your 'Treasure Planet' DVD while you go out to your car and get your wallet. That way, you won't miss out on pre-ordering 'Jungle Book 2.'"

I just stood there with my jaw hanging open for a moment. I mean, I've heard about hard selling before. But how bad must things be at the Disney Store if the cast members there are willing to hold guests' merchandise hostage in order to pre-sell a few more copies of "Jungle Book 2?"

I honestly didn't know what to say for a moment. I eventually burbled something to the effect of "I'm sorry, but I can't today. You see, I'm trying to be good here. I leave for Disney World tomorrow." To which this Disney Store employee replied "Oh, you don't want to buy anything down there. They're going to make you pay tax."

It was really a Fellini-esque exchange. Eventually, I was able to persuade this cast member to give me back my "Treasure Planet" DVD. Which she did, reluctantly. But -- as soon as I stepped away from the counter -- this Disney Store employee started right in on the customer that was standing behind me. Giving them the full court press about the advantages of "... pre-ordering 'Jungle Book 2' today."

Without a doubt, this was the most bizarre interaction I've ever had with a Disney Store cast member. Which is why I'm asking: Was this just one weird employee, or are these aggressive sales tactics now standard operating procedure for DS?

My apologies to any Disney Store cast members that the above news item may offend. That's honestly not my intention here. But I just found this incident to be so bizarre. So I was hoping that maybe some of you DS employees could shed some light on what was going on here?

Was this just an isolated incident? Or is there an in-store contest going on? Perhaps a sales quota, where Disney Store cast members have to sell so many "Jungle Book 2" per shift ... or risk banishment from the Magic Kingdom? Any info you Disney Store veterans can provide would be very much appreciated.
Now, I'm not suprised the lady tried to rack up a sale on Jungle Book 2, but she went to a bit much of an extreme to try and get it. I wonder what would have happened had she not given him back his Treasure Planet.

When these sort of things happen, that is when you need to call the manager of the store and politely tell him/her what just transpired. If that sort of thing happened to me, I would have never gone back unless they gave me some sort of incentive (hint, like a discount in the store.....i've heard if you complain they will do things to persuade you not to say negative things).

Brazil? What do you mean, Luke?

I read that article this morning, and was just as aghast as the rest of you. Isn't that bordering on harassment, for pete's sake?
I'm a pretty slow burner when it comes to people shamelessly hawking their wares - I try to be as polite as possible, even when it comes to telemarketers (gasp!) - but there are times I just put my foot down, and Jim's encounter would've been one of them. If she had held my disc hostage, I would've been like, "Look, I already said no - and besides, I'm not going to buy a friggin' cheapquel!"
Yes, I would've said cheapquel - as awkwardly as it rolls off the tongue, and no matter whether she knew what I was talking about or not - I would've used that term. Because that's what they are, and all they are.
What I wonder is - would she have backed down if Jim had his wallet, and simply said no? Because she apparently held it because she was "giving him a chance to go and get it".

But man, I hope this isn't a general trait of all the stores - it makes me afraid to go to the Mall of America one and ask about Sleeping Beauty and Lion King - would they spring a dozen cheapquel offers on me as well? Yeesh.

The Terry Gilliam film, not the South American country. It features a lot of bizarre behavior in the name of bureaucracy.

it's gotta be the salesperson, i used to work at MGM Studios and the obvious marketing technique that was taught was generosity and being curteous. a friend of mine works at the disney store here now, so i'll ask her.

Eh, I don't entirely believe that article. First of all, he claims that they called him by name. Unless he is there EVERY single day or wears a name tag, that probably didn't happen. I too picked up my copy on Tuesday. I was offered the chance to preorder Jungle Book 2 as well. I told them "No thank you, I don't by those sequels." The cast member gave me a knowing smile and nodded her head. Every story needs to be taken with a large grain of salt these days.

On a side note, the extras on the disc, on the screen where there are a lot of making ofs... you can choose from music, 2D and 3D, release, animation, etc., well I played them on my Toshiba player. Instead of just ending and returning to the menu, they loop and play over and over again. I tried it in my little Apex player and they all played fine. Interestingly enough, I looked on the back of the package and it says:

Some players may not be able to access all features.

As the Toshiba is an older player, I assume that is the reason why it didn't play correctly. Just thought that I would mention it here.

Lastly, Brazil is a fantastic movie. The three disc set for it is one of the best!

who is Jim Hill and who cares about this dumb story? LOL

This dude should write about the symbolism in Treasure Planet as opposed to some weird geek behind the register @ DS

Umm, I care and your post was useless in and of itself...

Maerj-Well, I think that perhaps Jim gave his name at the counter while picking up Treasure Planet.

That really weirds me out. Like the others in this thread, I try to be as polite as possible to salespeople, but if that woman had tried holding MY items hostage, I would've caused a big show right in the middle of the store to make her look bad and possibly get her fired. I wonder if she's as insistent on other Disney DVD titles that aren't sequels like Jungle Book 2...

So who is Jim Hill anyway?

One bad experience, oh well. I could complain all day about plenty of other stores that sell Disney DVDs as well. Would you like to use your Best Buy card?? Would you like to apply for a target card and save 10% on your purchase?? It's the same damn story. This guy should have just said he didn't want Jungle Book 2. I'm sure he made it sound like he did but just didn't have his wallet.

Well, maybe she said "Mr. Hill" because the reserved dvd had his name on it? Or, like Disneykid said, maybe he went to the counter and said something like "I'd like to pick up my Treasure Planet dvd - under Jim Hill", to specify which preorder it was. *shrug*

Maerj and Simba - Jim Hill doesn't write bullshit articles. He's a well-known and respected freelance writer who used to have bi-weekly features called "Eye Drive" for the Orlando Weekly, detailing seedy behind-the-scenes stuff at Disney. He's well-connected to company insiders, and gives the hard, sad facts about the Disney business, past and present. This is mainly films and theme park attractions, but the lowdown about them is highly interesting.
His writings proved so popular, however, that in mid-2002 he founded his own nonprofit site - JimHillMedia.com. Here he's expanded his features to include book reviews, "ruminations" and other (sometimes off-topic) articles from guest columnists, and Q & A sessions called "Why For?"s, where he answers readers' emails.
Like I said before, Jim doesn't write about just any ol' thing he feels like. He's very much into all things Disney, and it shows. The business side is particularly intriguing to him, and the reason he detailed the bizarre experience he had with this DS clerk is because he wants to know if this is standard practice at all the DSs now - notice how he asks the readers for their input. If it was standard, he undoubtedly would have researched into it more - to find out WHY the sales tactics are so aggressive. It wasn't just some stupid anecdote on his part. Everything he writes - especially personal stuff - is usually by way of explanation. Like earlier in the same article, he details his fiancee's leg troubles to explain why he was still packing for Florida - when he should have been there a week ago. :)

Jim is so well-known and oft-referenced because he is the only Disney "muckraker" who freely and regularly posts professional, "periodical"-type articles in one place, dedicated to the topic. You really can't get this kind of info anywhere else outside the studio buildings themselves. And in a time where a lot of people are pretty pissed at Disney's state of affairs, Jim's objective articles prove very informative... and cathartic.

At least they do for this little girl! :D

Um, the way I remember it, there was so much fuss raised over the cancellation because of the article he wrote (it circulated around the net like crazy) that Buena Vista reportedly put it on again - but not anytime soon, of course. :-p

We weren't dissing Jim Hill or calling him a liar or whatever. I just know enough about journalists to know that they like to put their own spin and slant on things. I have talked with people inteviewed in newspapers and magazines who told me that not only were they misquoted, but sometimes the writer would actually fabricate quotes. So, all I am saying is that maybe he was exaggerating there a little bit. It does sound a lil too creepy to be entirely true, but who knows?

I know this thread is ancient, but I can't believe they would/could do something like that! Honestly, to hold your disk hostage is crazy! If that were me I would have demanded to see the store manager and threaten if they don't give me a free copy of The Jungle Book 2 I will inform Disney CEO of the barbaric behavior of its employees. There's your sale Disney. lol I had a similar incident when I bought Family Guy Vol 1 from Wal-Mart and when I asked about an up coming DVD (I think it was Spongebob) he actually said "Wait one moment s-ir" and went to a DVD isle grabbed Spongebob Seasons 1 & 2 rang them up along with Family Guy Vol. 1 and said "uhh..that will be 137.98." I was shocked that he did that and demanded to see the manager. In the end I got a free Spongebob DVD (5 episode complication though. lol)
Wants Muppet Babies on DVD!!
Hopefully if Duckales and Rescue Rangers sell well we will get it!! Don't forget Gummi Bears!
