Lady and the Tramp Diamond DVD - out today

Post by MouseHouse55 »

I admittedly didn't look through the entire thread, but there was lots of discussion of whether the Lady and the Tramp Diamond Edition was getting a dvd-only release. Well I guess it is, as it's in stores now. And right here:

Only through the ass-faced Disney Store. And still only single-disc.

It's also available through Amazon and other sites.

Love the artwork, so ordered it. :)

Some of my least favorite Disney artwork, ever.

It's the same as the 3 other covers just with a closer closeup of the dogs and the supporting characters' placements rearranged.

Do you mean an 80's VHS cover? Or 80's marketing in general?

I don't know... :D It's all in my mind, you'd have to ask my mind.

No, the drawings are completely different. It's not the theme of the cover that I don't like - I think the cover of LatT should be the spaghetti scene. But the drawings on this cover are extremely off model, while the blu-ray cover is at least better, albeit far from perfect.

Since Lady and the Tramp has some of my favorite animation drawings of all time, I hate to see the characters butchered like this. Bring in Frank Thomas to make the damn DVD cover, please.

I won't lie: some days, I think that way too.

Ah, well I won't argue with that. But I don't think Disney has cared very much about on-model / off-model in their marketing since... what, the 70's? I mean, really, weren't the people who actually designed Disney toys for McDonalds' meals actual employees for Disney? Not the factory workers who sweated them out, but the designers? And the same for books-on-tape, storybooks, various other home video covers, etc(.)? When have they ever been on-model in their advertising?

Never. It's infuriating knowing what the artists at the studio could come up with.

It might be nostalgia, but the VHS covers don't seem to be quite as bad. For the Lady and the Tramp VHS, it seems that they actually used the original animation key -

I really wish the DVD cover was the combo pack cover. It's not that the characters are any more on-model or anything, but when I look at the Blu-Ray cover, the empty space annoys me. You have the accordion playing guy highlighted as if he's a main character, and then this enormous empty space in the right corner; what's up with that?
Though, I would be happiest if they dusted off some old VHS covers and used those instead. I've always loved the one SWillie! posted :(

I more than feel your pain. As a horror fan, you have no idea how the new millennium DVD covers LIVE to compromise the artistic integrity of dozens of classic films from all decades. I don't even like having the 2009 re-release of Last House on the Left in my collection, it's such horrendously, idiotically unrelated artwork. Though the backside of the disc art would actually look pretty damn good on Bay of Blood.

Er . . . not to be anal, but that's the limited issue DVD from 1999 that you posted. I know it's the same artwork for the 1998 VHS design, but I couldn't help myself in pointing it out. ;) It's my favorite cover art for the film regardless. :)

For the heck of it, here's a brief history of the cover artwork for US releases (I was too lazy to include LD's):

I'd say the 2012 DVD is the worst of the bunch. :p

I love the 98 VHS/99 DVD and the 98 WS VHS covers the best. They're beautiful. The 12 DVD is dreadful!

ENIGMA. ANAL. hahah

Agreed that the most current DVD is by far the worst. I really like the widescreen VHS.

That 1998 widescreen VHS was a pretty nice release. On top of the nice cover, it actually had bonus features! The restoration did have a bizarre color error in one of the scenes though. I used to own it, but eventually gave it away when I upgraded to DVD. It wasn't exactly the kind of release you'd find at Walmart back in the day, I only ever saw it in Suncoast so I'm guessing it was relatively rare.

This thread is obsolete with the release of "Lady and the Tramp" on Blu-ray/DVD combo packs. We should lock this one down, or change the titles and the only person who can do that is the original person who stated this thread,
The only way to watch movies - Original Aspect Ratio!!!!

Since this is a separate release from the Blu-ray and BD/DVD combo packs, I don't feel this thread's existence is an issue. But that's just me.

The only people that can lock down this thread are the admins/moderators, not the original poster. And the thread title is perfectly relevant to the discussion being made here, so I see no reason for the original poster to change said title. If you honestly feel this thread should be locked or edited, contact an admin or moderator.

For my money, the '98 WS VHS is easily the best.
