Hello friends!
I just returned from a trip to Mexico. While there, I looked for Disney DVDs and CDs. I found some interesting information. Disney DVDs there are for both regions 1 and 4 which means they play here in the US. Their DVDs are the same as their american counterparts: 5.1 English, anamorphic, etc. You don't have to watch them with either spanish subtitles nor dubbed. In other words, they look and sound exactly the same as US DVDs. I purchased two of them. I bought the special edition of Pinocchio with 5.1 english and a completely restored print. Flawless, beautiful. Lots of bonus material too. Also, I bought so dear to my heart (also in english 5.1) with a few bonus materials. Other DVDs that I saw but did not buy include The Country Bears widescreen! (we only got the pan and scan in the US), Ducktales the Movie (couldn't see much info as they were packed with a Donald Duck compilation DVD), Silly Symphonies and Mickey in Color (same as ours but with no tin), as well as a couple Xmas DVD (one of which included The Small One). They also had some of our 2 disc SE such as Lion King and Sleeping Beauty. I am surprised that nobody tries to import these since they work fine here in the states. I'm glad to have gotten the Pinocchio Special Edition (around $30 US dollars) and So Dear to my Heart (around $14 US dollars). Next time your friends go to Mexico, have them buy some for you!

That is so neat boy I wish I could have gone down to Mexico and seen that I would really love to get my hands on an authentic DVD of So Dear To My Heart !

Several of the UD members from Mexico, Brasil and maybe other countries have at various times posted web adresses you can order R4-America discs from and one of them has a signature stating all Disney DVD's there are R1-R4 coded. NTSC.

(As opposed to R4-Australia/Oceania DVD's which are PAL)

If they don't chime in on this topic, you can look up their posts in other topics for the web adresses

Hi Louis

It appears that Disney make one international NTSC master which is used for the US and all NTSC Region 4 countries (Brazil, Mexico, Carribean, etc.) as all their American discs are dual-encoded Region 1 AND 4. All they change is the packaging and the labelling on the disc!

The same goes for all PAL European discs. These are dual-encoded Region 2 AND 4 so they can sell the same discs in Australia and New Zealand which are Region 4 PAL. So even though the discs only mention Region 4 on the packaging they are in fact Region 2 and vice-versa!

Using the same international "master" obviously saves Disney a lot of money and explains anomalies like extra language tracks that aren't mentioned on the packaging. Of course, some countries do alter their discs, often due to licensing problems with some of the extras, but they still seem to dual-encode their unique discs. Strange...

The only exception to this rule is Canada where every disc I have purchased, Disney and otherwise, is encoded Region 1 ONLY!

Recently with the addition of DTS tracks, PAL releases are getting more and more localised. For example there are multiple European versions of Pinocchio SE and The Lion King, each with a different DTS track (English, Spanish, German and French - although Pinocchio doesn't have an English DTS track in the UK).

DTS has never really been pushed that much in the UK, as DD 5:1 seems to be the norm.

The biggest problem with discs that have DTS as the default audio track is that DVD players without a DTS decoder will play them with no sound at all! Of course you can usually alter the options in your DVD set-up menu so that it knows how to deal with DTS but that's a bit too complicated for Joe Public. They're more than likely to return the disc and claim it's faulty!

I find it amusing that the majority of Asian pirate DVDs have DTS sound but the official UK releases don't!

Hehehehe, the cover are very weird indeed, but is a option buying this dvd from mexico, because here in brazil, this dvd still was not released.

hey , I am from Mexico and its true, i have the Walt Disney Treasures with no tin and almost all the movies,
Here its almost the same, but there are no types of editions, all DVD are "the classics",
The recent Dvd had been Special Ed. like the Lion King 1 1/2 (here named lion king 3 Hakuna Matatata! its special, also the Lion King 2 its special ed.

i collect the platinum series, the masterpiece and the special ed. from US, but also I buy some movies here becouse they come with language Spanish, English, and Portuguese, and in US almost all movies Special Ed. and Platinum, come in only English and French.

the other great thing about the diney dvd's of Mexico is that before the sneak peaks and the main menu, there is a menu that says:

If you want to see this dvd in English Click here

If you want to see this dvd in Spanish Click here

If you want to see this dvd in Portuguese Click here

So isf you click on English the main menu changes to englis and also all the bonus feautures, and the same if you click on spanish or in portuguese.

I have a question for anyone who lives in Mexico: has "Melody Time" been released in Mexico? If it has, can anyone tell me if it is the unedited version?

The DVD Melody time is the same brazilian edition. You should buy it from Amazon.com in region 1 (this edition has the extras and spanish language track).

Wow! That sounds great! I can read Spanish (I better after 5 years of the class!), so the cover art doesn't bother me at all! I think I'd want the Mexican DVDs for the movies that aren't released in the U.S.

Disney Guru - You can translate the site at http://babelfish.altavista.com/ but I should warn you. It translates very loosely, but it is still somewhat understandable. Like the Disney Treasures: "Silly Symphonies" translated into "Stupid Sinfonias!"
