I still can't decide whether or not I want to get the DVD for it. A couple years ago we were supposed to get a Disney release of the film but that never happened. And Disney seems to be very slow in releasing the Ghibli films on Blu-ray. I know that the films have to be release in Japan before Disney can release them, but I don't understand what's taking Disney so long. The current DVD is only like $14 so I might get it, but, like you, there definitely will be a Blu-ray release and I am kind of getting tired of having to borrow it from the library.jpanimation wrote:^What did you just watch? Princess Mononoke? Like everyone else on here, I have to go to my library to get it, despite it being one of my favorite Ghibli films. I just don't feel like buying a decade old DVD and am holding out for the inevitable Blu-ray release.

This morning I decided to watch some musicals:
Nine
Mamma Mia
Hairspray
I find them all highly enjoyable and I've needed to rewatch them.

John Carter IMAX 3-D
I went to the Midnight showing of this new Disney adventure last night. All I can say right now is Wow!!!
I bought tickets to go see it again Sunday.
This movie is everything I expected it to be. The production values are immense, and the 30D makes you feel like you are part of the movie. It is truly very immersive with lots of 3-D effects as a bonus.
Taylor Kitsch carries this movie on his broad shoulders very well, Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe are his co-stars with a good performance from Mark strong.
There will be people who want to make comparisons to other Edgar Rice Burroughs stories, and Andrew Stanton plugs right along and lets them come.
If "Star Wars" was a young adult film that kids and adults alike enjoyed, then "John Carter" is an adult action-adventure film that will be enjoyed by kids of all ages. Language is not a problem, I don't understand why this film has a PG-13 rating. Probably because the action is very intense and very graphic.
If you see a movie this Spring, and John Carter isn't on your list of 'must-sees', you need to move it to the top of the list and see it now. If it is available in IMAX near you, it is defniitely worth the money.

The Woman in Black was pretty decent; it wasn't that frightening, but there were quite a few parts that made me jump up a little bit. Daniel Radcliffe did well as Mr. Kipps and I didn't even think of him as Harry Potter (too much). It was good, but I'll probably pass when this is released on Blu-ray unless there's a really good deal.

I watched The Little Mermaid last night; it's been quite awhile since I've seen it, so I'm glad that I got to watch it before I went back to school (I don't take my Blu-rays/DVDs with me because I don't want them damaged). It was great as always, so there isn't much more to say about it.

Today I watched Chinatown for the first time, and The Graduate for the second time.
I really liked Chinatown's art direction - Jack Nicholson's white suits and all the bright colours contrasting beautifully with the dark plot and the characters' actions. JJ Gittes was an immensely likable anti-hero, and even though I've seen the type of character before, Nicholson brings energy and vigour to the role. Faye Dunaway was dazzling, keeping her dark backstory hidden yet unnerved whenever her father was mentioned. As the notorious Noah Cross, John Huston initially seems affable until his cruel deeds are brought to light. The ending happens to be one of the darkest movie endings I've ever seen, and certainly one of the most powerful. However, in all honesty, I found some parts of the movie a bit too slow-paced; I didn't want it to be an explosion-filled violent and melodramatic thriller, but sometimes it didn't hold my attention completely.
The Graduate is both a funny and thoughtful film: Benjamin is a character the audience can relate to but can also be amused by, and the almost surreal editing coupled with Simon & Garfunkel's songs in the background make it something very unique and enjoyable. It's a very sweet and poignant movie, yet it's full of hilarious moments.

The Immortals (2011) 6/10 - The filmmaker seemed far more interested in the visuals then the characters or story. I kind of expected this after watching The Fall but atleast that had some kind of emotional core to it - keeping it from feeling entirely flat. Not much else to add, I’ve seen it all before and executed much better. I guess if I had to mention the positives; there were a couple of nicely choreographed action scenes and Freida Pinto (who is once again underutilized, still waiting to see what she can do).

TRON: Legacy - This is my second time seeing the film (I finally got it on BD/DVD) and I like it just as much as I did when I saw it in theaters. I saw the original afterwards and wasn't too impressed, but I definitely like this film; I hope there'll be another sequel in which we find out what happened to Flynn.
My Week with Marilyn - I just got this in the mail today and finished watching it about a half-hour ago. Michelle Williams was wonderful as Marilyn, and all of the other actors were phenomenal as well. The movie wasn't exactly what I was thinking it was going to be, but I do really like it. I'll have to listen to the commentary sometime soon.

Puss in Boots
Took me a while, but I finally saw it last night and I quite liked it. The thing I enjoyed the most about it is that, much like Kung Fu Panda and Dragons, Puss in Boots stays timeless and focuses on the culture and universe rather than inject it with hip self-awareness and pop culture jokes. Sure some jokes still made it in, but a great chunk of the movie focuses on the development of Puss and Humpty which was surprisingly refreshing. Their story is surprisingly complex for a family movie, and especially for a movie based on the Shrek franchise.
The only thing that bothered me is that the pace seems to be somewhat uneven and Kitty Softpaws, Jack and Jill were somewhat under developed. But the visuals and especially the music were great!
I would give the movie a 7.5 out of 10. It is a much better effort than Shrek the Third and Forever Ever After (which I loved), though the uneven pace does hurt it a bit.

Haven't posted here in a while, but from what I remember:
Stand By Me - A fantastic film, regardless of any genre, and probably the best acting to come from kids... ever. I still want to read Stephen King's original short story, despite the major differences I've heard are present. The ending with River Phoenix was really unsettling, especially because of his unfortunate demise in reality.
Saved! - I've always liked this film, but it resonates more with me now that I'm older. Mandy Moore is fantastic here, in one of the bitchiest roles ever put into a teen comedy. Other standouts are Macauley Culkin and Jena Malone.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - I don't know why it took me so long to see this film, but it was outstanding. Different than what I was expecting (I thought it would be more... scary? I don't know), but still stellar. Jack Nicholson was great and Louise Fletcher was chilling.
Shattered Glass - This was okay. Not as great as others seem to think it is, but not bad. The acting is good... Hayden Christensen, Chloë Sevigny (with what she has to work with), and Peter Saarsgard deliver basically flawless performances, but the story and direction are almost Made-for-TV-esque.
My Week With Marilyn - I though this was great! Michelle Williams was eerily identical to Marilyn Monroe, and Kenneth Branagh was the same to Laurence Olivier. Eddie Redmayne was very good too, someone who I was not too familiar with prior. Judi Dench and Emma Watson delivered as well, despite the serious lack of screen time. This was definitely one of Williams' finest performances, perhaps second only to Blue Valentine or Wendy and Lucy.

The Prestige (2006) Blu-ray
Directed by Christopher Nolan this is one heck of a movie. Starring Michael Caine, Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Scarlett Johansson with an all-too-brief appearance by Piper Perabo, and David Bowie.
A story about two rivals who are trying to one-up the other with their best trick. After an accident in which Jackman's wife (Perabo) dies at which he thinks was the fault of Bale.
Michael Caine is the middle man in all of this, and the movie takes some really great twists and the ending begs for another watching before all the credits role.
Really great movie, with a good story, great direction, fabulous photography, and on the Junkie Meter it gets 4 big stars out of 5.

Actually, I felt the same way. I expected it to be scary or creepy in a psychological way. IDK, maybe I was just projecting my own feelings towards institutions - which scare me - onto this movie. Either way, it was completely different then I was expecting and surprisingly enjoyable. Great movie.PeterPanfan wrote:One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - I don't know why it took me so long to see this film, but it was outstanding.
