unfortunately for you, yes, the Blu-rays are much better than DVDs in terms of PQ and AQ.

I hate to break it to you, but yes. In terms of the picture quality, a movie on blu-ray has a resolution of 1080p, and a DVD has a resolution of 480. Basically, this means that the picture is over twice as large, and so can be of much, much higher quality.

There will be people that argue that it's not a big enough difference to make a difference, but most people seem to agree that the difference in picture quality is pretty massive.

*I see I was beaten to the punch haha.. those comparison images give you a good idea.

Ehmm, no I'm not. I didn't compare them to the Platinum edition. The Diamond DVD releases have really few extras.

So, I went to Best Buy to get the $5 off deal for bringing in my old Disney DVD (I was going to trade my James and the Giant Peach SE), but it turned out that offer is only valid for the Blu-ray and DVD pack, not the one with the digital copy!!! I was soooo mad! I mean, why would they make an offer like that?

So I went to Target instead.

If you have any intention of upgrading to Blu-Ray soon, I would recommend buying the combo packs from now on. I don't even have a way to watch Blu-Ray yet, but I've been buying the combo packs so I won't have to re-buy everything later. As others have said, the quality is infinitely better; I can see the huge difference between DVD quality and 720p on my laptop, and Blu-Ray picture quality is even higher at 1080p!

And the Diamond Editions without 3D counterparts do have much better special features then the DVD's.

This is an extremely confusing response lol... Every single blu-ray release thus far has had more extra features than it's respective DVD release. And then 3D releases often have more bonus features than their 2D counterparts.

In my opinion, even on a 720p set Blu-ray is worth the upgrade for picture quality.

Ok, I missed that last part. You would be right, based on the newest versions of whatever title released on DVD, compared to that, the Blu-rays do have more extra features (barley). However, if compared to Disney DVD's at the height of Disney DVD's, the Blu-rays thus far more times then not have been a joke when it comes to the extras department. It's this stupid "Virtual Vault" thing in part. I'm sorry, it just doesn't count. But even newer releases of the animated films the last 5 to 6 years (that were not Pixar) have kind of sucked.

Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, Bolt, Prince and the Frog, Tangled, and Winnie the Pooh have all left a lot to be desired when it comes to extras on the Blu-ray.

I think I explained myself well enough up top. But I'll add this: most of the Blu-rays released have barely (with some exception) had more extras then their respective DVD's. Part of this also is that since 2007 or 2008, Disney has been playing the game "lets put next to no extras on the DVD's to force the Blu-ray issue" games that they are not playing with Blu-ray 3D vs. 2D Blu-ray. And yet, for many titles, it comes out to a handful of extras on the Blu-ray not on the DVD. It almost makes me want to not buy any of their films to be fully honest, or at least their new ones. Then again, with the direction things or going, that may happen anyway despite whatever the Home Entertainment format at the time is.

(Regarding the diamond edition line) The fact they label their blu-rays "DIAMOND EDITION" and the respective dvds as non-editions sort of hints which one is the superior version.

In fact, US Disney even 'prevents' purchasers from getting the inferior quality edition making it unavailable for 7 weeks, yet still offering DVD owners the DVD+BD option on time.

So really Disney is putting in quite a bit of effort to prevent justcuttinhair's lament. But don't be too concerned, everyone thought DVD was close to perfect before the last few years, so you're not screwed at all. Had you bought a VCD on the other hand...

In Australia, they delayed the BD release of SB, so I end up buying both the DVD and the BD, costing $70. Then they released the CE one year later for DVD only. Talk about frustrating.

So this Diamond Edition has everything from the Platinum Edition except the games (which I don't care).

Thinking of selling my Platinum Edition then.

Well, ended up getting two copies today. Originally stopped in at BB, and they only had the two disc edition of Lady and the Tramp. I wasn't really up to date on this release, so I (wrongly) assumed that was as good as it gets. Turns out I was wrong. Went to Wal-Mart after finding out and got the 3-Disc copy. Lady and the Tramp on my iPod is all kinds of win. :D

Planning to gift my 2-Disc copy to my little 3 year old niece, sounds like a good plan. Need to start them on quality movies when they're young after all.
Thanks to all that offered to help with my Avatar...Starion, RJKD23 and cj!

I forgot to mention it earlier, but at my Best Buy they didn't have the digital copy version either. They were advertising it, but when I asked about it they kept giving me the 2 disc version and looking at me like I was crazy when I insisted there was another version. As I also mentioned, their offer for $5 off if you trade in another disney DVD was only valid on that version. I wonder why Best Buy seems to be left out of the digital copy release?

My Best Buy did have the Digital Copy edition, but on the other hand, Future Shop did not have it - strange as it is the same company.

I think, Patrick meant actually Tarzan and made a mistake.

According the Blu-ray vs DVD debate:
I don't really get the bitching. With TLatT you get almost all bonus features from the PE plus a few new ones and much better picture and audio quality. Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland were all packed with bonus features on Blu-ray. In my opinion both Fantasias, Bambi, The Lion King and Dumbo were good releases, too.

The only disappointing releases (for me) were the ones of the new Disney films, but I'm pretty sure at least Rapunzel might get a better release at some point.
