More Universal Monster Legacy Collections

Post by Loomis »

From dvddrive-in.com:

"On October 5, Universal Home Video will release three more sets in its "Monster Legacy Collections." There will be a CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON set that will also include its sequels REVENGE OF THE CREATURE and THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US. THE MUMMY set will include the 1931 Boris Karloff classic, as well as THE MUMMY'S HAND, THE MUMMY'S TOMB, THE MUMMY'S GHOST and THE MUMMY'S CURSE. THE INVISIBLE MAN will include the original film starring Claude Rains, as well as THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS (with Vincent Price), THE INVISIBLE MAN'S REVENGE, THE INVISIBLE AGENT and THE INVISIBLE WOMAN. Each set will contain extras--more details to follow!"

No word yet on a boxset like the last one, but I'm sure I'll get them either way. A little mini-bust of The Mummy would be cute...

Wow, great news! I didn't expect another collection this quickly (with news of the Creature being possible for a VH2), but fantastic to hear Oct. 5. As much as I want some more busts, I don't have room to display anymore, unfortunately.

If they were doing two releases like this I think they should have had Frankenstein in one collection and Dracula in another tranche.

I think they could have got much more mileage out of the marketing doing it this way.

There is really no icon in this set.

Yes, but the original idea was to plug Van Helsing (hence the Sommers featurettes), as all three appear in the film.

I would argue that the Mummy is fairly iconic, as there have been 2 huge recent blockbusters (also by Sommers!), and everybody knows who the Invisible Man is.

However, I take your point - not quite as iconic as the "big three". This may mean no "Gift Set", but it is still nice Universal do these things. Let us hope they get the menus sorted out this time!

I'll get the Creature set, but I already have the Mummy and Invisible Man collections on laserdisc, but if they were to issue a gift set, I guess I have to buy the whole shebang!

I am all for this set! The last one was excellent so of cousre I want more. Hopefully we get more of those nice little busts too. It would be really cool if we could get matching busts of Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers and Pinhead too. Sort of like get the modern day monsters and the classics all in minibust form. Ah, the power of minibusts...

I can't wait for it to come out, I have been waiting for a long time to see the original Mummy and Invisable Man but I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Being as the Creature set will only contain 3 movies, I hope we either get the first 2 in 3D too! Or the somewhat related in theme Mole People included in the set.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

creature 3-D colors

I hope so too!

Since Creature is in black and white, and DVD colours are more stable and pure, it could be possible to do a decent two colour lens 3-D version for video. It wouldnt be as detailed as the b/w version cus the mpeg2 colour part resolution is 240 x 360 (half the vertical and half the horizontal b/w part resolution) but I'm sure seeing it in 3-D would compensate for that! ;)

The main obstacle is the choice of the separation opposing colours, normally blood red and deep cyan, because those 2 particular colours aren't very attainable in current displays (Cyan in particular is almost greyish) so the separation ends not working too well.

Maybe they should go with other more "video friendly" saturated colours. Like variations of yellow/blue or green/magenta, which are more saturated in current displays.

Ooh....Mole People. I was in the "Dracula's Gift Shop" when I was away, and along with all the tacky crap from the Theme Restaurant (Dinner Theatre seems to be big in Queensland), there were original film posters. Mole People was one of them.

3D would be cool, but I wonder - would 3D prints be available after all these years?

Creature was on television (many years ago) and it was in 3D, so I assume that there are still copies of it around.
