Yes, they did background on prince Charming (going back to the past), so how is it that the episode moved the series forward?slave2moonlight wrote:Didn't move the series forward??? It gave a huge chunk of backstory and character info on key players! Sheesh.
I have to disagree about it already becoming predictable, too. I mean, knowing a villain is going to lie doesn't really mean the show is predictable. That's what villains do. And there was no way to know for sure if he would end up at the bridge or not. I assumed he would just stand her up.
And the show isn´t predictable just because of the villain. I mean for everything.

Giving background information moves the story forward if it is important to what is going on in present day. But, you may have to have patience to see how that works. Character development moves the story forward in its own way. Knowing more about Charming's relationship with Midas's daughter, learning more about Midas's daughter, these things are part of the story.
As for your second statement, meh, I disagree.

I know that I have been criticized about my take of this television show but wheat I think I am really trying to say is - this is NOT a Walt Disney presents "Once Upon A Time" - this is an original ABC Television series about what happened to our favorite Fairy Tale characters if their relatives were discovered all this years later in a little New England town called "Storybrooke".
I love this show, I didn't at first, but I now truly am a fan of the show and this one could be around for a while. I hope that they spend more time on certain stories so we have more just one or two seasons worth of this wonderful series. If it is done correctly I think that it could be around for quite a while.

The only way to watch movies - Original Aspect Ratio!!!!

They really do make it difficult to say otherwise:dvdjunkie wrote:I know that I have been criticized about my take of this television show but wheat I think I am really trying to say is - this is NOT a Walt Disney presents "Once Upon A Time" - this is an original ABC Television series about what happened to our favorite Fairy Tale characters if their relatives were discovered all this years later in a little New England town called "Storybrooke".
The Sleeping Beauty villainess named Maleficent with a very similar costume to the one from Disney, a Snow White with short hair, her prince named Charming, a dalmatian named Pongo, Cinderella with a blue (kind of silver) dress, an upcoming Belle with a golden dress...
If they really wanted to stay away from Disney... Why so many references?
To me, the characters and stories are based on their original fairy tales, but the names and such are a homage to Disney. To me, they are just using names and outfits we are familiar with. So, I agree with dvdjunkie in that aspect. If they ever do a Little Mermaid episode, I expect her hair will be red just as a homage. If they do a Frog Prince episode, I wouldn't be surprised if the heroine is black.
slave2moonlight, remember that scene where Emma said she wont be working nights anymore? That's where she found out that Graham and Regina were sleeping together.

Technically, ha, it IS.dvdjunkie wrote:what I think I am really trying to say is - this is NOT a Walt Disney presents "Once Upon A Time"
Look, I'm not saying this is supposed to be a live-action interpretation of the Disney characters in their own world or something, but it IS a Disney show about fairytale characters that uses the same names as their animated characters, even when those names are exclusive to the Disney versions, and it seems to be doing this more and more and including appearance touches also, like clothes and such. It's a little more than an homage, they WANT you to notice those Disney touches at this point. Especially if it is true what I read here that the Beauty and the Beast incorporations will include Gaston.
Of course, I was never trying to argue this issue anyway, so I don't know how people got that idea. I was just saying that I liked these touches and I wanted to see more of them, but if they were going to do them to this extent, I wish they had just gone full on out. Not that I couldn't enjoy the show otherwise, but if they don't want people to connect it to the Disney animated versions, well, then they are going WAAAAY overboard on the Disney touches.
But, even then, my only complaint was that they should have made Maleficent a little more like the animated one, and I might have said that even if her name weren't Maleficent, basically because she is an outstanding character in the Disney film. Honestly, when you see the dark fairy of the Sleeping Beauty tale done in other films these days, she can easily be disappointing because one always remembers how great she was in the Disney animated feature.

I'm actually glad Maleficent was not like the Disney version. I feel like that scene was many years after the Sleeping Beauty story, and the eveil fairy/Maleficent had moved on. She knew she had lost and there was not point in dwelling in the past. I liked that aspect. Sometimes, you really want something and spend YEARS fighting for it. In the end, when you still don't have it, all you've gotta do is move on, admit defeat, and let it go.

In response to my post that "Once Upon A Time" is NOT Walt Disney presents.........
Why not just watch the show the happens to use some of the characters names (with permission) and back-stories, and just enjoy it for what it is. A television show to sit back and enjoy a Sunday evening watching.
That's what I do. I don't to read anything into the storylines, or the character reveals, or anything like that. This is a 2011 television series that is meant to be enjoyed by everyone not just the Disney purists who think everything Disney evolves on ABC.

Wrong again. Just because Disney owns ABC, in some way or another, there is no logo at the beginning or end or anywhere that says: Walt Disney presents........Technically, ha, it IS.

Ah, no, not wrong. It's put out by Disney in a manner of speaking, which, you know, is what I meant. If they wanted to title it, "Disney's Once Upon a Time" at any point, they could. It's like when Nightmare Before Christmas went from a Touchstone film to a Disney film. Many of us always considered it a Disney film though, just as this is sometimes referred to by people as a Disney show.
Anyway, why does it bother you so much that we take interest in these Disney aspects they obviously included for the purpose of our noticing them? In truth, we are enjoying the show more fully by taking in these details that were included on purpose. No reason we should enjoy it in such a simple way when it is made to be enjoyed more thoroughly than that. They are putting some effort into these Disney connections, after all. It's been more than name dropping. When they start working it in as much as they have, they WANT us to notice it.

Junkie, why are you trying to control the way people are enjoying this series? You may enjoy watching the show each Sunday and leaving it there, and that's perfectly acceptable-- but the creators' of the show certainly aren't crying because people have found their show compelling enough to have discussions about it. So please, stop trying to demean people who discuss the connections between the show and Disney films.

I agree with UmbrellaFish. We just have to enjoy the show for what it is.
However, I personally think the characters are indeed 'inspired by' the Disney characters, but are not the same ones. For instance, in the Disney movie, Snow White and the Prince met and fell in love before she was sent away to be killed.
In OUaT, they met while Snow was already in the woods. So it's obvious that the stories don't take place in the same continuity.
Anyway, here's a new sneak peek, which confirms Sheriff Graham's fairytale character. This scene is also different from the Disney movie, confirming what I said above.

She said she betrayed her by revealing a secret she had shared with her. In previous episodes, the Queen had said that Snow deprived her of her only love. Perhaps someone she loved before she married Snow's father? I don't think they'll tell us until the season finale!tsom wrote:Woah...Evil Queen/Madame Mayor is pure evil! Wtf did Snow White do to her that pissed her off so much?
Yes, that was obvious. What wasn't obvious thought was that they were planning to kill him off! Especially since they presented him as Emma's potential love interest from day one. Shocker!tsom wrote:Btw, was there any doubt that Graham was the Huntsman? Wasn't it obvious from the very beginning?
I liked the homage to the Disney film with the Queen's heart box.

He still had a lot of wolf qualities that might of made him the Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. The way the Ruby always looked at him... Emma wearing red.tsom wrote:

And since he was raised by wolves maybe he could of been moglie from the jungle book

I haven't watched the episode yet, but reading how Ruby was looking at him, I wondered if he might have been the huntsman who saved her from the wolf. Sometimes that character is called a huntsman, sometimes woodsman, sometimes woodcutter... if I remember correctly.
Anyway, then I read this about him being raised by wolves, ha, so... maybe not.
Or maybe the Queen's huntsman and the wolf in Red Riding Hood are the same character... Since you say he was raised by wolves? Would that make him enough of a wolf? Or maybe he was under a werewolf curse for a while... Seems that these characters' lives crossed paths in the fairytale period, so I think a character could be shared like that between two stories... Anyways, I'm about to watch the episode now... For him to also be Mowgli might be pushing it, ha, but that WOULD be funny. It would be pretty funny and awesome in its own way, ha. Of course, it would make this start to seem like House of Mouse. Let's see Christopher Robin somewhere too, ha.

Okay, I am almost finished with it. And now it seems like he's the Tin Woodsman too, ha. The Huntsman, the Tin Woodsman, Mowgli, and the Big Bad Wolf. They should have had him kill Bambi's mother.
I wonder who he will end up with, if anyone. I'm thinking Ruby or Emma. I wonder which. I also wonder, is Emma the Swan Princess? Ha. I still say she is part Elisa Maza.
