One of the members at Micechat started a thread about this topic about a week ago too:
Micechat: Walt Disney Studios taking the "Walt" out of Disney. :(

Seems kind of like a middle finger to Walt and anyone who loves Disney, if you ask me. And by the way, their reason for doing so has got to be the dumbest one ever! :x

It also just doesn't look as good, in my opinion. "Walt Disney Pictures" looks, I don't know, more serious somehow. "Disney" is just a brand. Makes it just look like merchandise, not a real movie. So, if you really do read these forums, Walt Disney Company, take note of that.

What a terrible decision

The new logo has a cynical feel to it.

No surprise that after Roy E. died, the company is erasing his uncle's name from the studio.

And doing it to fit the screen is NOT a perfect excuse! Also, semaj, the way I see it now that you mention it, they're more than likely doing this just to spite Walt and his nephew, who fought to keep his uncle's memory/company alive!

Now, the guys at the company are being total jerks...

I'm sorry, but DisneyJedi, aren't you disrespecting and spiting Uncle Walt, by not making your screen name WaltDisneyJedi?

Step back and maybe try not to overreach on those conspiracy theories so much, and you'll find life gives you a LOT less headaches.

You know what? If I ever start working for Disney, I'll do what I can to MAKE them put the 'Walt' and 'Pictures' back into the logo. They're already asking for consequences...

No, I don't mean the VIOLENT type of consequences. I mean the consequences in the forms of complaints and bad publicity, damn it!

Maybe I could sorta understand if Walt had originally called the company "Walt Disney Pictures" once he ended the distribution deal with RKO, but he originally called it "Buena Vista." :p

It's just a case of streamlining so I don't see what the big deal is? Everyone already knows Disney as a brand name that symbolizes family entertainment and that's exactly what they're going for here.

BUT it was Walt who founded the studio! It would be just about as bad as taking his name out of Walt Disney World, which many, even Roy, knew was Walt's dream and Walt's dream alone. Maybe not alone, but you get the idea. :(

Well, I don't think it's an outright crime, as some would imply, but I just think losing the "Walt" takes a really nice, human aspect out of it, and it certainly takes some of the nostalgia out of it. I think it just plain makes it unappealing, and just makes me think of the mass produced toys on the shelves at the toy stores from this era when I walk into a Disney Store and really don't find very much for me (unlike the old days of the Disney Store, when it wasn't all targeted to the little kids only). This makes me think of the millions of Cars toys flooding stores, in other words. Including the Walt keeps a reminder for me that this is the company associated with the old Walt Disney anthology series. It reminds me of Walt himself, hosting his old show, and that gives me a warm feeling inside. I'm sure it won't make a difference to the mass public, especially the newer generations, but to me, it's less appealing. Having the Walt in there makes me think of Treasure Island, Lady and the Tramp, Ludwig Von Drake... Just saying "Disney" makes me think of Cars, Jonas Bros., Good Luck Charlie, and stuff like that. It just cheapens it for me.

I agree with enigmawing.. It's not like they are taking out his name. Just his first name. What's the big deal? The company is normally referred to as simply "Disney" anyways. It's not a matter of respect for Walt... it would be disrespectful to completely change the name of the company from his name. (Although if there was profit involved, I'm sure they wouldn't be opposed! :P )

I do agree with slave2themoonlight in that it adds a certain humanistic and personal feel to the company. I'd prefer Walt Disney Pictures, but it's not a big deal.

Yeah, this is so disrepectful to Walt. He is the MAKER of the company, he's MAKER of the first movies, He MADE Disneyland (and Disney World if you count that), and he MADE Mickey. Without Walt, ALL OF THIS WOULD NOT EXIST!

It's starting to sound like they're starting to lose the REAL Disney again. :( :( :( :( :(

Ub Iwerks was actually the one who created Mickey. But I agree with many here who believe Walt's name should not be taken out. To me, the removal of his name seems like a sad attempt to make the company "hip" with the times. It's like when they got rid of traditional animation just because 3D animation felt 'in'.

In one way, removing Walt's name from some of the lesser products, like those DTV sequels or movies based from Disney Channel's tween programs isn't such a bad idea. I mean, should Walt really be associated with Return to Neverland? Or The Lizzie McGuire Movie?

This. I think the official reason they've removed the name is silly, and even though this isn't an inherently bad thing, it just takes some of the humanity out of the company's name. It makes it sound like a brand rather than something more heartfelt and personal. Nonetheless, the new logo won't really affect my enjoyment of the movies it's put before.

If you want to get really technical, Hugh Harman influenced Iwerks in his design of Mickey quite a bit (via mice drawn in 1925 around a photo of Walt).

They're also only taking his name off the logo. The front gate will probably still say "The Walt Disney Company." Its official name in press releases will still be "Walt Disney Studios." This doesn't bother me, whatsoever.
