The Art of Walt Disney

Post by Ludwig Von Drake »

I bought The Art of Walt Disney at a book sale, and it is amazing. It is from the early 1970's. It has fold out pictures for the different movies and shorts. I am not reading it in any particular order, but I happened to look at the war years and in the paragraph about "Education for Death" it said that sadly Disney destroyed all copies of this short. It is sad to think that there was a time when it was though that no one would be able to see these cartoons again.

If anyone see the book, read it, it is very interesting.

I would love to get this book, but being a seventies publication, it must be extremely difficult to find, specially living in Brazil. At least I have "The Art of Walt Disney" by Christopher Finch, which is a GREAT book (in all sences - it is gigantic). In my opinion, one of the best Disney books.

The one from the early seventies (1973) IS the one by Christopher Finch. Not too hard to find on eBay, I guess. The 1983 edition is a reprint with the same contents. The one available new is probably the updated 1995 edition.

Are the new versions as in depth with the pictures and fold out pages as the original?

The 1983 edition is just a reprint of the original. The original (1973) has a transparent plastic-like dust-jacket covering a thick cardboard Mickey Mouse glued onto the cover. I've been told that this edition can be a bit hard to find in good shape. The 1983 reprint has a simpler and more practical cover design but the contents are the same.

The 1995 edition is reformatted, partly edited and rewritten, updated - some parts are basically the same and certain parts have been cut. There are no fold-uts. If you'd like those - get the 1973 or 1983 edition. Note that there is also a shortened version from 1975. Those interested in this nice book may want to stay away from that particular edition.

My doesn't have the slip cover and part of the mickey has broken off, and overall the condition could be better, but for $9.50; It was a great deal.

Ya, it really is a great informative book. I've read the updated 500 page copy, but I know there is also a consised edition from 2000 (around then) with a foreword by Roy E. Disney. I also heard Finch is going to release another update this year.

It's a risky time to release updated Disney books because soon they may be outdated again.

It will always be outdated because more movies will always come out and the parks, are continuously changing.

Interesting that he wrote that when we now have that on the frontline DVD.

Why no US version of Pierre Lambert Blanche Neige book ??

Post by wobble-the-witch-cat »

Whilst on the subject of better quality books on the Disney theme check out the Pierre Lambert (He of the Pinocchio/Mickey Mouse books fame)Blanche Neige !Snow White) book. Published in France a couple of years back, I purchased my copy from Amazon.com FR the French version of Amazon. If you can get hold of a copy of this book DO IT NOW it is simply AMAZING!
This book blows your socks off!! For sheer reproduction quality it cannot be beaten and why the Disney books division has not produced an American version with an English translation of the French text I cannot understand!! Please lobby Disney books for a complete translated version in time for the 2007 re-release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Now shall you deal with me oh Prince and all the powers of Hell !!

wobble-the-witch-cat do you know if the Pierre Lambert Blanche Neige book has been translated into any other language since it hasn't been done in English? I can read 2 (or maybe 3 :P ) other languages besides English. Maybe I'll get lucky...

Is the french version availble in the US? I would be able to read part of it at least and it would be interesting.

Hey people, I found the book "Walt Disney's World of Fantasy" for a pretty good price here in Brazil, and I'm interested on buying it. The ones who have it could tell me if it is worth it? Is the text good? How are the pictures?
Thank you/ Obrigado/ Gracias

I own the original French 70s edition.
It's seems as big as the US one, it's gold and has a 3D Mickey on the cover (the same drawing of the US edition but in dimension).

And even inside the book, all the main chapters pages are gold.
Beautiful 8) :)
