I was listening to Bob Dylan's 'Mr Tambourine Man' and now I'm listening to Norman Greenbaum's 'Spirit in the Sky' (both of which were played at the funeral of Hunter S Thompson).

The Lorax trailer lead me to this song . . .

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/hKw6I5Idgns?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/hKw6I5Idgns?ve ... n_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

* * *

And I recently rediscovered this one:

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/L0yYCqkt0VE?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/L0yYCqkt0VE?ve ... n_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
It probably reflects my current mood. :p

The Byrd's version of the song is nice, too, but theirs is really a mainstream pop song, whereas Dylan's is a genuine folk song.

Last: Golden Earring- Twilight Zone (live)
Now: Simon & Garfunkel- Baby Driver

I've been listening to Flo's new album all day (Ceremonials). Favorites include: Shake It Out, What the Water Gave Me, Never Let Me Go, Breaking Down, No Light, No Light, Heartlines, All This in Heaven Too and Strangeness and Charm. But, really, all of the songs are amazing, even the demo for WTWGM.

Today I have the Taking Back Sunday fever... And a fever I caught that includes a bonus sore throat :/

<b>Last</b>: Taking Back Sunday - Great Romances of the 20th Century

<b>Now</b>: Taking Back Sunday - New American Classic

<b>Next</b>: Taking Back Sunday - A Decade Under the Influence

I slightly prefer the version by the Byrds, because the increased liveliness (as well as the more upbeat music) is more appealing to me.

Yes, you should definitely pick it up! Her previous album (Lungs) was great, but Ceremonials is nearly perfect. There are a few songs that I don't like as much as the ones I previously listed, but they are all really fantastic.

I meant that Dylan changed his stage persona and his musical identity as an artist so many times, that it's hard to contain him and place him in one box.
I meant that too. Some people have information about an artist's personal life and judge them positively for it. The music gets to mean more to them because of it. I meant what you're saying too. For myself, I prefer to try to hear all music the same way: do I think it's right for the genre? My disapproving take on Dylan is because I don't think his music works as rock or pop. It doesn't stir my soul nor effectively soothe it. Nor does it make me physically want to dance or move. But, I'm more than willing to see it as something like blues since I have no experience in that genre.

Goliath wrote:It does help to know a bit about his divorce when listening to Blood on the Tracks, though, to appreciate how deeply personal the stories he's singing about are --to know they're not just made up, but are about and, sometimes, directly aimed at, real existing people. The hate and vitriol he spews in a song like 'Idiot Wind' is impressive enough in its own right, but to think that he's actually completely crushing his (ex-)wife takes the song to a whole other level --at least, to me. But like I said, the songs stand on their own. I'm not really into artists' private lives.
Same here. If I can't keep up with all of them, I think it's best to forget the personal meaning the artist might have. I mean, there's no reason to think they could be making a sad song because people (including listeners) feel sad. Or a dark song because we all need to express our darker or evil sides.

Speaking of which...

OH GOD...

No personal judgment here, I just have to say I hate 3DD with a passion. And - this is strictly a joke - but, based on your fine selection, may I now recommend Nickelback? :

Actually, that's a song I like. I don't know any other Nickelback songs, but that one sounds good to me. :)

Last: Bob Dylan- Tangled Up In Blue (Blood on the Tracks, 1975)
Now: Nickelback- How You Remind Me
Next: Linkin Park- In The End

(That last one I remembered because of your recommendation.)

I swear to (fill in the blank) too that when I went to get that YouTube link that the first thing on the sidebar was 3 Doors Down - "Kryptonite." In fact, I can probably prove it (thank you Prt Scr button), hold on...

5 Minutes Later :

Man, if you like whiny, pathetic, pity-me poor white guy breakup songs, Nickelback is for you. But the joke with Nickelback is that they're considered a really shitty band by A LOT of people and there are videos that play their songs back to back to prove they sound exactly alike. Etc. I guess you're not in on that joke. (I'm not really either- I just observe what goes on. I'm not really ever part of it.) You're young too. Younger than my brother. The younger people are apt to like Nickelback. Oh, and my lame mother who likes really bland rock songs likes them too.

Here's another pointless (but potentially lucrative) recommendation:

Wait... I have another idea. A recommendation taste test. BLIND LINKS, away!:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPBlgmEeS1Q

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlyOLwfwjiQ

These are all songs by different artists that are actually pretty well-known. Songs that I would expect you to recognize if you recognize "Kryptonite." Write in reply next to every link which of those songs you liked and which you disliked.

Just for fun.

Uh, what if I disliked them all?

The post-grunge/modern rock scene is very much not for me.

That's the point.

I don't care for it either. I only like the last link in that row which is one of only a few songs that I like by that band. But, I'm trying to recommend music to someone who likes 3 Doors Down. A task for which degrading oneself is unavoidable. From Matchbox 20 to Lit to Fuel, these bands all just blended into one gigantic ball of bland. Although, I wasn't paying attention to grunge when it was going on. So, I always assumed there was a basic cut-off for grunge where bands such as Soul Asylum and Collective Soul became Smash Mouth and Blink 182. If not those bands, than definitely Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows, The Spin Doctors, Del Amitri, Hootie and the Blowfish, The Gin Blossoms, Dishwalla, The Proclaimers, The Rembrandts, Deep Blue Something, and The Goo Goo Dolls weren't grunge. Right? And they were a constant throughout the early and prime years of Alice in Chains, Silverchair, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, and whatever subgenre was represented by Gravity Kills and Stabbing Westward. So I don't think whatever happened with Matchbox 20 (poster-band for bland) happened after grunge.

Right now I queued up Everclear - "Santa Monica" with no plans to jump to anything else, but with all this talk of bland 90's rock making me feel kinda mucky, I think I might have to plunge into some new-millennium dance / club music just to regain composure.

I'm listening to Camille Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre" - fan-fucking-tastic (and more than just a little creepy).

Last: Rihanna - "Hard"

Got stuck in my head first thing this morning. The lyrics include the line "my runway never looked so clear." I woke up feeling like I must've slept in wet cement and it only partially dried.

Now: Rihanna - "G4L"

Hey, it was either this or "Fire Bomb" and some things just aren't worth crashing your car for.

Next: Rihanna - "Complicated"

Also, freakishly fitting.

I can't help it. It's cute.

I still think the movies are garbage. But this, I like.
