Well, what about Die Hard?Flanger-Hanger wrote:I agree with jp about Miracle..., it would be hard to find a better Christmas movie.

I was being serious. I wouldn't survive all the 'jolly' festivities if it wasn't for John McClane killing off fifteen terrorists whilst blowing up the entire place. A perfect antidote to all the chagarin sweetness if there ever was one.Flanger-Hanger wrote:I meant more in the traditional sense.

Yeah, films like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Batman Returns, Trading Places, and Gremlins aren’t really ‘traditional’ christmas movies, which is what I meant when I said Miracle on 34th Street was my favorite of the genre. In fact, they're "non-traditional" christmas movies, which is apparently a thing (I found this with a quick google search). So I guess that makes Die Hard my favorite 'non-traditional' christmas movie.

Fair enough, but I still feel Miracle pulls off the "Christmas jolly" thing well, which isn't an easy thing to do. But Die Hard is good too.Goliath wrote:I was being serious. I finally saw Butch Cassidy a couple of weeks ago and... I didn't really like it at all. I didn't like the linear narrative and got very few laughs out of it. The Sting fared much better for me.
Anyway, I'm working on a list of films that I'm planning on watching, and in a year or so, I'd like to look over it and see if I have.
Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau)
Breathless
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
My Fair Lady
The Battle of Algiers
They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
Harold and Maude
Paper Moon
Enter the Dragon
Jesus Christ Superstar
Badlands
The Last Detail
Amarcord
The Conversation
The Man Who Would Be King
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
The Deer Hunter
Kramer vs. Kramer
Being There
Ordinary People
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
Fitzcarraldo
The King of Comedy
Scarface
The Breakfast Club
Tampopo
Coming to America
The Last Temptation of Christ
Kiki's Delivery Service
JFK
12 Monkeys
Boogie Nights
The Celebration
Rushmore
In the Mood for Love
Punch-Drunk Love
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Dead Man's Shoes
127 Hours
Plus:
Tarzan, the Ape Man
Rocco and His Brothers
Blow-Up
The Last Picture Show
Eraserhead
The Blues Brothers
The Color Purple
Peggy Sue Got Married
Matador
Law of Desire
Heavenly Cratures
Braveheart
Requiem for a Dream
I actually just finished one of the films I was going to put on my list (The Lives of Others, which I just couldn't get into), and I have two of the others that I've been planning to watch available for me to soon (I pulled out my mom's VHS copy of Rosemary's Baby and rented The 400 Blows from Netflix), so I didn't add them to the list.

-Pulp Fiction
-The great Leboswky (sp?)
These seem to be great films that ought to be seen, an are praised by many. But I don't feel compelled at all to watch them. Pulp fiction looks like an orgy of violence, The Great Lebowsky sounds boring.
(now waiting for comment of fans who try to convince me I'm missing something great)

^ Don't watch The Big Lebowski. It's pretty much useless; I found it to have no entertainment value and wasn't funny at all. I know some people will tell you it's marvelous and must be seen, but I think it was a boring, humorless film that should be avoided (unless, you know, you want to waste two hours of your life).

Why try to convince you? If you like this scene, you'll like Pulp Fiction. Otherwise, just skip it:BelleGirl wrote:(now waiting for comment of fans who try to convince me I'm missing something great)

It loses something the second time around. For that matter, so does the whole movie, and Reservoir Dogs is the same way.Goliath wrote:Why try to convince you? Well, watched a great part of it. Now definitely know this is not my type of movie! Great fun right, hahaha , we have a big laugh when the character played by Samuel Jackson shoots an umarmed man to pieces just because he's annoyed (I heard him shooting, only saw the last bit of it). As I expected: an orgy of violence and that's supposed to be amusing and funny.Goliath wrote:Why try to convince you? If you like this scene, you'll like Pulp Fiction. But maybe fans can explain why they think it's such a great movie. As for me: it turns my stomac!

Er... you just explained it yourself: Sam Jackson, a bigger-than-life character in this movie, shoots a lowlife thief just because he annoys him! Didn't you hear the dialogue?!BelleGirl wrote:Well, watched a great part of it. Now definitely know this is not my type of movie! It's just masterfully build: the tension is heightened with each and every second. They don't just storm in and kill them off, no, they let them sweat for five minutes before taking their revenge --and they do it all in style. But you have to watch it till the end to enjoy the cleverness of it all.
Oh, and here's another great sequence you're gonna love:

"When you came pulling in here, did you notice a sign on the front of my house that said 'dead nigger storage'?"
- "No, I didn't."
"You know why you didn't see that sign?"
- "Why?"
"Because it ain't there! Because storing dead niggers ain't my fucking business, that's why!"

Yes right... brutal killing is fun and entertaining as long as you build up to it with a clever dialogue and the victim is a petty thief. Anyway, I saw the scene out of context of the story, knew nothing about the hamburger-eating guy. But did see an agressive guy who enjoyed a killing.
Still not my cup of tea -I've seen plenty of violent movies like Braveheart or Missisippy Burning and even appriciated Fargo. But to me, this is just violence for the sake of violence. I don't enjoy it, however 'clever' or 'witty' it may be.

I 'get' it alright. It just isn't my taste. Not everybody has to like mr. Tarantino's style.Goliath wrote:I thought you'd never get it!BelleGirl wrote:Yes right... brutal killing is fun and entertaining as long as you build up to it with a clever dialogue and the victim is a petty thief.
