Pixar Shorts Film Collection, Volume 2 (open brainstorming)

Post by Big Disney Fan »

I've often wondered why the collection of Pixar shorts on DVD was known as "Pixar Short Films Collection, Volume 1". At the time of its release, they had all the shorts released! If all the shorts at the time were on the DVD then, why was it called "Volume 1", as if there is another volume was in the wings?

That's what this thread is all about, what they should do for the second volume of Pixar shorts. This DVD would pick up from where the first one leaves off (the last film on the first volume was "Lifted", which was paired with "Ratatouille"). It's nowhere near complete, but here's what this DVD would contain so far:

Main shorts:
-Your Friend the Rat
-Presto
-"Mater's Tall Tales" series ("Rescue Squad Mater", "Mater the Greater", "El Materdor", "Tokyo Mater", "UFM: Unidentified Flying Mater", "Heavy Metal Mater", "Monster Truck Mater")
-BURN-E
-Partly Cloudy
-Dug's Special Mission
-George and A.J.
-Day and Night
-The Toy Story short to accompany "Cars 2"

Bonuses:
-Toy Story Treats (the complete set of Toy Story-themed quickies made for Saturday morning TV on ABC in 1996)
-The original, bustier Knick Knack

What are your thoughts?

It helps to future-proof the name of the DVD/Blu-Ray. They couldn't call it "Pixar Shorts: The Complete Collection" if they knew they'd be making more shorts. It makes perfect sense to call it Volume 1. The consumer should expect a Volume 2, even if it won't be around for several years.

until now, i had never heard of george and aj, so had to go to youtube. funniest short ive seen in ages! very well done. cant really add anything to the list posted by BDF, except i think the cars shorts should be on their own disc. when added to the other shorts, it seems theres too many for one disc, and an overkill of cars as well. maybe they should be on a disc paired with the dvd/blu release of cars 2

i look forward to volume 2, even if i have to wait for ages.

But at the time, at least, it should just be "Complete Collection". Then when they did another go-round, they could just as easily add "Volume 2" on the end there. Hey, it worked with "The Complete Pluto", didn't it?

Maybe the busty version of "Knick Knack" would be an Easter egg, so you would have to do some searching to find it.

And the reason I thought of including the Cars series here is because it was on this one two-hour TV special of back-to-back Pixar shorts and they included several of those shorts. This special is also the reason I thought of a sequel for Pixar shorts in the first place.

No, it shouldn't, because even when it was released it was incomplete. It came out the same day as Ratatouille and did not include "Your Friend, The Rat" which was on Ratatouille.

Volume 1 works better because that's what the disc is.

I don't even see why this is an argument. It's released at "Volume 1", Pixar isn't going to change it anytime soon simply because there are no plans to release a "Volume 2" in the near future.

A agree with you Escapay, it makes perfect sense to call the first release "Volume One" when clearly there will be more made. Nice for sight on Disney's part for once. As for "Volume Two coming out, looking at the list of shorts that have been made since the last one, would not be surprised to see it with in the next 2 years.

Interesting timing of this thread. Disney just announced a new collection of Pixar shorts to be released alongside TS3. Not a Volume 2, however. Can't say anything else until August 13th.

The Cars Toons will be released seperated from the other shorts, in November in Germany. Are you talking about this release Luke?

Yeah, I saw that Cars Toons collection in some Dutch release schedule too. Didn't really interest me though, but I did wonder how many shorts it would have. I mean, there's like 5 right now. Hardly enough material.

Probably the same thing under a different name. :)

Well, showing that a DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo titled as "Mater's Tall Tales" is listed as expected on the DVD/Blu-ray schedule on this website, we think we can safely assume that that's what you're speaking of, Luke.

My 9-yr-old son can't get enough of the Pixar shorts Blu-ray.
He watches it at least once every three months or so. I really hope they continue with a Vol. 2 for this!

But if it's "Volume One", then there should be another made. I just think that it looks awkward to just have a "volume one" when it's the only one available.

I would believe that eventually there will be a Volume 2, they just need to release enough shorts to make one. Pixar probably wont include the older Cars Toons though since they do have their own release. Pixar is very proud of their shorts, so I'm sure we'll see them released in a variety of ways some time in the future.

What the hell?!? Why is this still even a question? They were future proofing the collection. I would be pissed if I had "Pixar Shorts: The Complete Collection" sitting on my shelf next to the inevitable "Pixar Shorts: Volume 2". That would just be asanine.

Pixar Shorts: Vol. 1 will eventually sit right next to Vol. 2, as it should be.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get "Volume 2" either next year or in 2013. They have about enough shorts now for a new release. I bet it would be part of either the "Brave" or "Monster's University" Blu-ray releases. Time will tell of course.

Yeah, there is more than enough for a Vol. 2 for perhaps 2013. It would likely have:
  • Your Friend the Rat
    Presto
    BURN-E
Tokyo Mater (it did get a theater release after all)
    Partly Cloudy
    Dug's Special Mission
    Day & Night
    Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation
Air Mater (if it's not a "Mater's Tall Tales")
    Toy Story Toons: Small Fry
    La Luna
    Brave DVD short
    Short with Monsters University
And that's how we do it. :)
