Wow, the movie sounds terrible and the reviewer was pretty much listing all the things that I’d be bitching about. I’m disappointed to say the least. We'll just have to wait and see how much changes are made but I was under the impression that this was almost locked story wise.
Thanks for saving it Sotiris

Yeah, I'm really disappointed too. I hope they make a lot of changes although I highly doubt that those 'Disney fairy tale' tropes and cliches will be changed since they constitute the structural core of the film.jpanimation wrote:Wow, the movie sounds terrible and the reviewer was pretty much listing all the things that I’d be bitching about. I think you guys are reacting much more harshly to the review than the reviewer intended. Like he said, there are still plenty of changes to be made.
To say that the movie sounds "horrible" seems way over the top... what sounds horrible about it? Oddly enough, I feel as though this review has got me MORE excited for Brave.

Well, the mother-daughter relationship was one of the things I was most looking forward to with this movie, and it sounds like the movie still focuses on that pretty heavily. I think it'll end up okay in the end. Pixar has always fallen back on some cliches in their films, but so do most films--so does Disney, pretty often.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"
Guys, chill, the movie is not even CLOSE to being set-in-stone completed! Plenty of time to change things that don't work. Not even the oh-so-perfect Pixar can make something fantastic right off the bat--of course there's gonna be things that need adjustment. And the reviewer said they really take into account the feedback they get, which is a great thing, yeah?
I'm getting total deja vu here....like when people were calling Tangled a terrible Shrek ripoff before anyone had even seen it. We'll see how this one turns out in the end, won't we?

Actually, it's quite the opposite here. With Tangled, people said it was a Shrek rip-off based on the trailer and some promotional images while industry insiders and early reviews insisted that it was not and it was really great.phan258 wrote:I'm getting total deja vu here....like when people were calling Tangled a terrible Shrek ripoff before anyone had even seen it. With Brave, people were amazed by the trailer and the art leaked while early reviews are unfavorable.

I meant that this idea of deciding a movie sucks before you've even seen it in its finished form is the same. And I don't recall everyone being so amazed by Brave's early art....seems a lot of people think she's ugly.

I was talking about the backgrounds, the landscape etc. People were really impressed by that.phan258 wrote:And I don't recall everyone being so amazed by Brave's early art....seems a lot of people think she's ugly.
As for Merida's design I still feel that it's overly caricatured and disproportionate which I find unfitting for the main character in this type of story.

You're allowed to not like the way she looks, but letting ONE early review of a very, very rough draft of the movie get you down about it is foolish.
Just like the people who said Tangled was just like Shrek based on commercials, mostly with footage that also wasn't in the finished product, were foolish. Decide after you've seen it with your own eyes.
And to be clear, I don't mean just you personally, Sotiris. I mean everyone. Including myself, because sometimes I let myself judge things before I've even seen them too. I have to remind myself all the time that that's not the way I want to live--deciding how I feel about something before I've even had a chance to, um, feel it hahaha

But that's what we do, meaning us fans. We nitpick and bitch about it.phan258 wrote:And to be clear, I don't mean just you personally, Sotiris. I mean everyone. That doesn't stop us though from actually seeing the movie when it's released and enjoy it and change our minds about it.

Cool

And I totally do my fair share of nitpicking/bitching, haha! But it's usually when I'm reading something, rather than watching. Now, if the script leaked and the dialogue was terrible, maybe I'd have something to say....

Well, speaking for myself; I won't say the plot sounded exactly horrible, but that the story lacked coherense. I'll hope they'll make the story more coherent.SWillie! wrote:I think you guys are reacting much more harshly to the review than the reviewer intended. Again with this? My assumption was that Pixar wanted Merida to look more plain/average than the standard princess instead of fitting into the skinny supermodel caricatures of Disney Princesses. Isn't that what we expect from Pixar? Originality?Sotiris wrote:I was talking about the backgrounds, the landscape etc. People were really impressed by that.phan258 wrote:And I don't recall everyone being so amazed by Brave's early art....seems a lot of people think she's ugly.

Anyway regarding that review, the stereotypical plotlines worry me but I think Pixar will do them in such a way that it doesn't feel faded or stale. I actually want her to be a little more like Mulan who's bigger problem was trying to seek approval from her family instead of rebelling against them. Or her rebellion and love of archery helps Merida cope with not being the princess her mother hopes for her to be (a self esteem issue). There's a lot of ideas they could work with here.
And another unique idea...have Merida actually marry one of the suitors at the end. *gasp*

I don't think it was a conscious decision on behalf of Pixar to make her more "plain" so she would differ from the Disney princesses. I think it's just the way Pixar usually designs their human characters; it's their style. In that respect, I don't think her design is "original" as it's emblematic of Pixar human characters.toonaspie wrote:Again with this?
