Disney Blu-ray 3D re-releases gone too far?
I just found out that on November 1st, the Toy Story is getting a 3D Blu-ray re-release. It's one thing releasing new films in 3D that were actually filmed in such but re-releasing films on home video in 3D that never were is excessive to me. Do we really need Toy Story, BaTB, Lion King, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc, The Little Mermaid, etc getting 3D Blu-ray releases?
To be honest, I'm all for it. Technically, all three Toy Stories HAVE been released in 3D. 1 and 2 were rereleased about two years ago to theaters for a short time in 3D. As for the rest of Pixar's library, it seems only natural that they would go back and 3D-ify all of them, since it's really just another step in the process of creating a CG film.
Disney's hand drawn movies, on the other hand, don't seem to naturally lend themselves to 3D, but with the Lion King they've proven that they can do an awesome job with it. I'll be first in line to pick up all these films, even though I don't have a 3D player or TV yet haha

I think it's a bad idea. Similar to the colorization of black and white movies, and updating movies with unnecessary CGI. But Disney has already proven that they don't really care about preserving their movies. Only updating them for newer audiences is important. That has always been the work method of Disney.
And to those who say that the original versions will still be released. Look at The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and the Toy Story movies. Those were altered only because of their re-releases.

Yes it is. But what ticks me off even more is how even though Blu-ray hasn't fully phased out DVD, Disney has started to play the same stupid games now with Blu-ray 3D where they gut the previous format of all bonus features in hopes that movie fans bail on the old format in favor of the new.
They are doing this with both "Pirates 4" and "Cars 2" and I think it sticks. Making the Blu-ray as bare bones as the DVD and putting all the extras with the Blu-ray 3D is a really bold faced move that I sincerely hope blows up in their faces this time.
I hate how they force the issue with the newest format with things like this or releasing the old format a month later. I understand they are a business at the end of the day and all they really care about is how much money can they make. But for this particular business practice, I think it sticks. I think it is short sided and in the long run, a bad business practice. How many formats can they go thru with this practice before it backfires on them and consumers finally say "ENOUGH!"?
I was rather anti Blu-ray when it first came out, but have since decided that the world is big enough for both DVD and Blu-ray and that a good collection can house both side by side, with Blu-ray being there more for new releases. But I am maybe as genuine as I've ever been when I say, I will never, NEVER own a Blu-ray 3D! I'd rather not buy new movies if it ends up that is all they release.
I rather skip seeing movies in 3D in the theater anyway, I just think the whole gimmick will fade away in the next few years if not sooner. If people's tolerance for it doesn't kill the Andreana off, the economy will.
Anyway, rant over. Back to our regularly scheduled forum thread!

Well, honestly, I don't mind 3D (not a huge fan of it either). But I do mind tampering with old films.
Films made in CG already exist in virtual 3d environments, so making a 3d version of Monsters inc only requires adding an additional camera and re rendering...
But when it comes to hand-drawn films... that requires tampering. To turn a flat drawing into a 3d one... that's tinkering with the original frame. THAT I do not support.
Nor do I support making special features only available to the latest format in order to push people to change. Sometimes I see new releases, and it seems ridiculous... "Now on blu ray, blu ray 3d, dvd and digital copy!". Really? Do we need 4 simultaneous formats?? Why not make it an UBER combo? Add VHS and Beta formats too... and maybe in film form, in case someone has projector...

I would love for old Disney movies to get a 3D-release! Do we need it? No. Is it a new and fun way to watch beloved movies? Yes! Aladdin, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Pocahontas etc would look great in 3D. I think 3D release's on Blu-ray is be the best and most important, but if Disney gives them a theatrical run as well that would also be great.
Favorite Disney-movies: Snow White, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, Tarzan, Tangled, Frozen, Pirates, Enchanted, Prince of Persia, Tron, Oz The Great and Powerful

It's not exactly the same as giving Blu-ray all the extras and leaving the DVD with nothing, they're just making the deluxe edition include the 3D disc itself (which is barebones) and an extra bonus disc. The extras are not format exclusive, they're price point exclusive. The same thing happened with DVDs when they started to put 1-disc as the standard for new releases where you would get 2 discs for the same price before and have to pay even more for the special edition around 2004/5.milojthatch wrote:Yes it is. Bolt is also getting a 3D release the same day.Khonnor wrote:I also saw that Meet The RObinsons and Chicken Little will be released next month on 3D Blu...
As I remember correctly, were they 3D in cinema as well?
I wouldn't mind getting these in 3D because I'd like to get them on blu-ray without that stupid blue swoosh they used to add on every cover art. I hope there are coupons or deals out there for getting them all. I don't think I'd be too happy about paying $30 for each film (or maybe I would for Bolt and MtR's, but definately not CL).

But you *have* to buy the Blu-ray 3D combo in order to get the bonus features. With the coupons now cut in half, there is less incentive to buy the 3D combo pack. For example, with the Lion King, had the coupon been a $10 dollar one, both the 3D and non 3D combo packs would have been exactly the same price. It would have been a no brainer to buy the 3D combo back. This would have been less of an issue if the coupons were bringing down the price more (though the coupons themselves not being for the regular combo back anymore is another issue).cms382 wrote:It's not exactly the same as giving Blu-ray all the extras and leaving the DVD with nothing, they're just making the deluxe edition include the 3D disc itself (which is barebones) and an extra bonus disc. And it wasn't an issue with TLK if you didn't need the 3D version, it was a fairly linear pricing decision from a business standpoint.
I was close to buying the 3D sets for both Tangled and The Lion King when they came out, but the logistics worked out in favor of the 2-disc editions.
That means (if my experience is typical) that Disney just isn't putting Blu-ray 3D discs in people's houses like they have been with Blu-ray discs in DVD packaging for the Diamond Editions, so they're going for a more forceful strategy with the extras disc exclusivity.

Does anyone know is there are going to be any special offers or coupons for Bolt, Meet the Robinsons, and Chicken Little being released in 3D on the 8th?
I noticed that Amazon has them marked down a bit and will offer $10 off if you order 2 or more of them. This offer also includes all 3 Toy Stories, The Nightmare Before Christmas and G-Force from what I can tell.
I've never really payed attention to the Amazon coupons before because I usually prefer to pick things up in person, but where do you find them?
It doesn't appear that DMR is going to have any kind of coupon available.
I'm personally excited to see these 3 getting re-released because this will probably be the best physical release we'll see of each film. Even though they are basically re-using the same cover art, they look better than their initial blu release because Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons wont have that stupid blu-ray swoosh.

I think they're decent for theaters but I wouldn't want 3D in my home. My eyes were hurting like halfway through Nightmare and that was "4D" (3D + some effects).

Thank you!Dr Frankenollie wrote:If all of them can be seen in 2-D as well as 3-D, then I'm okay with it. However, I concur with milojthatch's irritation over Disney trying to manipulate consumers into getting 3-D Blu-Ray.
No question about that. I really wonder how far they'll go with this business model before it actually does blow up in their faces? I've been talking to people who have no plan on buying a 3D tv, but are buying the 3D packs anyway for the bonus discs, and then just getting rid of the 3D disc. So Disney may win this round, but I wonder if they can pull that off indefinitely?cms382 wrote: It's a pretty annoying practice.
Funny you mention this fact, I think they don't. I truly believe the economy and Disney's lack of understanding of it is part of the issue with the end of the Disney Treasures and the end of the Disney Afternoon shows on DVD right now. They pushed too much on consumers rights as the economy cracked. I think they mistook a "lack of sales" as "lack of fan base or interest" in these titles, when in reality, it was a lack of advertising and a lack of money to buy all the release right as they came out.toonaspie wrote:I don't think Disney is fully aware of the state of the economy right now.I know a lot of people who still won't budge from standard DVD. Even our household only has on Blu Ray player with only a few BluRay movies for it so far.
Disney for the rich, huh?
I truly do not believe the bulk of the Disney fan base today only cares about modern Disney and Pixar and Disney Animated classic alone, which seems to be the message Disney is giving us the last few years outside of maybe D23.
