New here, as you can tell.

I've recently watched tangled 6 times now! on tv/cable, and I must say, this is one the best movies I've seen, in my entire life. And thats coming from a 21 year old man who yawns at most previous princess movies and any films which shares similarities to them; Probably my second or third fav disney movie. Tarzan would be first.

It's so good II feel bad not not contributing to its success and seeing it on the big screen; The trailers had put me off though, I ended up thinking it was little girls version of shrek with an annoying dude. And so watched harry potter with my girl instead(she hated it ).

But this movie was the total opposite(nothing like shrek); a great movie with likeable characters. And I find it hard picking a favorite the movie.

Rapunzel- charming, beautiful, innocent, smart, courageous, pure hearted character; I don't think its possible to dislike her. She and ariel(and maybe tiana) are my fav disney heroines so far.

Flynn- I thought he was petty fuuny/cool and resourceful/smart ; He seemed like a more mature and funnier version of Aladdin. Him and Tarzan are my fav disney hero so far.

Max- Best fcking sidekick ever! I laughed every time he was on screen

Gothel- pretty sweat villain, and sexy too  I liked all her villainous expressions and how good she was at manipulating people. I am however disappointed they took out a really good part from mother knows best (where she rises from the coffin and smiles). But it was still good without it. would have been better though.

So yeah, I really liked this movie. up there in my top five Disney movies..And I'm glad to know its a success financially as well..

Agreed. I have no idea why they would cut it.

I don't know if this has been discussed already, but am I the only one who notices the striking similarities between the character of Mother Gothel and the character of the Witch from Stephen Sondheims "Into The Woods"? It seems Disney took a lot of inspiration from Bernadette Peters and the character she originated. Even the songs they sing are so, so similar to one another. The song "Mother Knows Best" seems directly influenced (to say the least) from the song "Stay with me." Even their looks are similar.

I honestly think its a coincidence, because I am very familar with Bernadette's witch and I thought Mother Gothel was such a very different take on the character. It is really only natural that they would come up with "reasons" Rapunzel needs to stay in the tower like protection from bad people, because those are simply the kind of reasons a lot of people could come up with of if they put their mind to it. The only similarity I found to be rather interesting was that both witches use magic to become young and beautiful again. I do see your points, but I don't think they really used Sondheim's witch at all. I think it's all coincidental. Maybe I'm wrong, but they never even mentioned "Into the Woods" or that musical's witch ever in anything they have said about the film ever, that I have heard.

It just seems like it is a HUGE coincidence if thats what it is. For the same character from the same fairy tale to basically have the exact same look(hairstyle, clothes), singing style, personality, etc. It even seems as though the voice actor for Gothel has a voice similar to Bernadettes. I agree that Mother Gothel needed to state the reasons for Repunzel to stay in the tower in the song, but the songs are similar in more ways than just getting the same message across. To me there is no question that Disney used Bernadette/Into the Woods as a model for Mother Gothel-the first time I saw Tangled this stuck out to me immidiately, to the point where whenever Gothel was on I got sidetracked by how blatantly Disney was using Bernadette Peters for "inspiration".<(and thats putting it kindly)
Regardless, I still like the movie.

I almost want to ask what songs did you hear when you say "Stay With Me" and "Mother Knows Best" are very similar! Those songs have completely different melodies, styles, tones, and meanings you're supposed to get from them! I think what you are percieving as a similar singing style is simply the Broadway singing style, and Mother Knows Best was meant to be a Broadway song from Broadway songwriter Allen Menken. And I'd say the witch and Mother Gothel have very different personalities!

I really had to strain myself to get what you mean about their similarities, and I do get it, but I honestly don't think they used her. They never, ever, ever mentioned her or that show before in talks or information, so there's that. If you still think differently, that's your thoughts, but I think the two are very, very different takes on the character and it's very cool to see such different takes on one character!

I really am surprised to hear that someone who is familiar with both characters doesn't see the similarities I do between the two. I'm sorry you had to strain yourself to understand what I meant about them having the same personality/style etc. I thought I described it in a pretty uncomplicated way(and I don't have the patience or time to try and list off every single detail these characters have in common). This seems to be an argument that would just go in circles if continued so lets just agree to disagree.

JohnnyWeir, I see the similarities, I just had to really think about them to get what you meant, to see them, really. However, yes, we will still have to agree to disagree, because I still disagree. Maybe one day they will say they used Into the Woods or someone can ask them and maybe they'll say yes or no.

Maestro Award Recipient Alan Menken on the Future of Movie Musicals
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/a ... led-252504
THR: What is the state of the movie musical today?

Menken: Musicals are tough. There is no industry or pipeline through which new movie musicals come -- there aren't stars that we identify with musical theater, nor is there an established audience that's big enough just for a film musical. After we did Tangled, there was really no movement to do more. Essentially, you're reinventing the wheel each time you do a film musical, and I've been fortunate that I get to try.

THR: Although it paid off for all parties in the end, you voiced frustration over the way Tangled was marketed. What did you take issue with?

Menken: That it wasn't billed as a musical. In the trailers, the songs were hidden -- they used a Pink song instead -- because I think Disney felt the best way to market the movie was as a kind of boy-oriented action adventure. But I was hired to write a musical based on Rapunzel. So sometimes it's frustrating, but in the case of Tangled, you have to say maybe they knew something because they changed the name, made a serious effort to market it in a certain way and the movie did very well. It worked out just fine.

So I tried kind of glancing through the thread but didn't see anything..

Do we have a date yet for the Tangled short? Or even a time frame? It's definitely premiering on Disney Channel, right?
