I imagine I'd need a lot of training then. At least I'm not tone-deaf, since I can tell when I'm off-key! I actually used to have a lot of fun at karaoke and would occasionally get compliments on my singing. I always figured that was based more on my confidence/presence than ability, but maybe I'm just really self-critical. Regardless, I was really limited on the types of songs I could do and always wished I could pull off more girly songs.

I'm the same way. I've gone through voice training and gotten compliments on my voice, but I can't listen to myself without cringing.

You don't need a pretty or perfect voice to become a good singer. Even if you have an 'ugly' voice, you can become world-famous if you can use it to your best advantage. Just look at my sig for the living proof.

I think that's more to do with the songs he writes. If Bob Dylan wrote awful songs, then I doubt that he'd be as popular as he is today.

Of course he wrote the best songs in pop music history and nobody can put thoughts and emotions into lyrics like he can, but he would have been nowhere without his sense of phrasing, intonation, timing and the overall technique with which he knows perfectly exactly when to fasten; when to slow down; when to emphasize; when to glance over the lyrics etc. That's why his songs sound so bland when sung by others. Compare Adele's version of 'Make You Feel My Love' to Dylan's original: Adele makes it a mainstream, nice-sounding, but ultimately general and forgettable pop song. Dylan's voice has the conviction and persuasion to make you believe every single word he sings. You know he means what he says: he's been there, done that and now he's telling you. It takes more than mere lyrcis to do that. Or else listen to 'Idiot Wind' or 'Where Are You Tonight? (Journey Through Dark Night)' and imagine singing it any other way... it would lose all emotion and all meaning.

In Adele's defense, I've always though "Make You Feel My Love" was a dull song. It might just be because I've heard it way too many times.

To add to the thread derailment I saw a thread on another forum where the question was asked: Is it better to give constructive criticism, or just pump someone up by saying they are the best singer in the world?

There is some girl on Youtube called Nichole337, who has posted a ton of videos where she is singing covers to a bunch of songs (like Eye of the Tiger,) and it's pretty bad in my opinion. Evidently she has a "mild form of high-functioning autism."

She gets a lot of hate and flaming, but then there are a bunch of people saying "Leave her alone, she's doing what she loves, and she's a good singer!"

Of course, anyone who says they dislike it is immediately labeled a hater, flamer, or cyber-bully; by her legion of white knights.

Constructive criticism, absolutely. You don't have to go all "OMG you suck LOL" on someone, but what good does lying do? It depends on the person you're talking to, how you'd bring it. If it is indeed an autistic person, I have no problems with bringing it a little bit nicer. If it's some arrogant douchebag who thinks he's a great singer, you can be a little bit meaner.
